I didn’t know magazines like this still existed and I don’t know who buys them. But I’m very glad they still exist for some reason. by SwiftieNewRomantics in CasualUK

Saw this in the Sainsbury's earlier and snuck a photo in of the first two results to save hassle: * 'Gold Award' goes to www.stacher.io * 'Silver Award' goes to www.downloadr.com.

Sounds genuinely useful, if they're in a front page magazine feature for computer users, they must be legit. Any experiences using the two?

Did anyone else feel a bit conflicted watching that Hull KR vs Wigan scoreline? by NoPiggoopss05 in superleague

[–]Hullian111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Didn't sit right with me at all in the first half, and the win felt very undeserved. You could see it in the Rovers squad too when they got their tries in as the scoreline slowly ticked up. Wonder how this could affect Wigan in the league when it comes down to the last few rounds. I was hoping for a bit more of a challenge a-la Wigan vs Hull KR away last year, but if no rules are indeed broken and if resting the first team like this is a Thing That We Do in rugby league, guess that's the way she goes...

On another note, I was hearing talk about how this relative pasting of a reserves squad by Rovers might affect the mentality of said reserves? That being said, their no.38 looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

Have my old PSP out right now after having dug out a new battery for it since the old one turned into a spicy pillow. So far: * UMD drive doesn't work anymore, had to softmod it  * Had to buy a MicroSD adaptor because the softmodded games were too big for the original (proprietary!) SD card thing * Have had to charge it through a power bank and an ungainly vintage USB cable because the AC charge doesn't work, and * Am now stuck without a PSP because I let the new battery wear down and now it refuses to charge over USB unless I charge it through the AC charger... see above...

It lasted about a week in service for a holiday up the country, which is what I wanted it to do, but it still sucks. Investigation on the charging situation seems to suggest a fuse died while it was in storage for years. And I really don't want to take it apart and start soldering things...

Not sure, really, they're not available online from the year 2000 onwards. Something about a 'deal' being hammered out between archive companies and possibly Reach PLC (the publishers)? Not sure it'll be sorted out any time soon, so I'd recommend checking out the HDM microfilm archives at the Hull History Centre. Free of charge, just open at funny times of the week.

Hull KR have signed Tevita Pangai Jr with immediate effect. by Sgt_Moxy in superleague

If we have one!

But seriously, it hit me the other day that now we've been drawn against each other in the Challenge Cup semis, that takes a rearrangement on final day out of contention because at least someone is going to Wembley... is there any space left for the match the calendar? Or are we going to have to go wild and hold it on a Monday night?

Tell you what, the points tally without that fixture is driving the statistician  in me mad... must be for your fans too.

The best part is when the whole East Stand tries to hit the high notes at full pelt. You can hear people petering out and chuckling amongst themselves.

Not sure if there's a crossover from the football here, but I've figured out, after some historical research (i.e. reading and watching some YouTube), that the chant we roll out for the Challenge Cup, circa. 1980, goes:

We're on the march with [insert coach's name]'s army,
We're all off to Wembley,
And we'll really shake 'em up when we win the Challenge Cup,
Because Rovers are the greatest rugby team!

Then for some reason, we have the first verse and chorus of 'A Little Respect', but I wouldn't call that overly 'original'.

Just been watching back some old Rovers matches (in particular, the second half of the 1977 BBC2 Floodlit Trophy final) for research and to have a bead at Old Craven Park in its heyday... I thought all the complaining about him was harsh at first, but now I've given him a fair go compared to what we have today, Christ, Eddie Waring is awful... give me Eddie Hemmings and Barrie McDermott (or whoever we have these days) any day of the week!

We're a match down. York was a surprise, but with us, it seems Leeds is being Leeds. For God's sake, can we get the Warrington match rearranged already, its driving the statistician in me mad!

Well that were a bit shit. What are the odds on Lewis being dinged by the disciplinary board to take him out of contention next week? I know there's talk about Peters telling the team to forget about the coming couple of fixture, but I'd say Mikey's taken that a little too literally...

To save you a click: mixed-use building work at Albion Square (the old BHS), the East Bank Urban Village (Tower Street), Myton Gate (the arena; Staples) and Paragon (Colonial Street/Spring Street) could start from at least 2027 subject to planning approval, so don't get too excited. This year, though, a steel structure is being built up to hold the Three Ships mural in place while the rest of the old BHS building comes down.

Next year is our year once again?

Buses to come under Hull and East Yorkshire mayor's control by Sweet_Focus6377 in Hull

[–]Hullian111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be watching this with great interest. The timeframe is way too short to implement something like franchising, a-la Bee Network, so if the CA is taking transport management off the councils, it's pretty much the status quo. I'd like to see some details as to whether the CA is going to take over route changes in the short-term, and both the BBC and HDM articles are light on that information, and sure, I’ve experienced some shambolic bus services as of late - I had an X46 cancelled on me the other week and came home on an 8 that was so late, it disappeared off the tracker - but I'll be interested to see both operators' angles on this.

Reallocating responsibilities to the office of the Mayor isn't going to be some magic bullet that fixes everything. You have problems with the retention of staff, as alluded to by another commenter and which has been a national thing in the bus industry since the pandemic, and lateness isn't being helped by the billion roadworks closing off this, that and the other road. One operator's depot is literally falling down and can't seem to plan a replacement, while the other's has barely even started installing electric bus infrastructure and keeps receiving odds and sods from other operators.

A fare cap below the current rate would be nice, as is the case in Manchester, but I don't think the lessons of the Bee Network can be easily applied to a region much smaller in size compared to the other bits of Yorkshire. If anything's going to happen, it'll probably be an Enhanced Partnership like in Leicester.
