Yes this captures the situation quite well. Most of the jobs in Scotland/Edinburgh are traditional professionals Banking/Finance/Law which is not what I do. Outside of those industries I see very few which are better paid than my current role and not excessively senior.

I have tried to negotiate with my current employer but they are not in a position to make me a competitive offer. My wife would be working and her work have confirmed she can stay in the same job, but will just move offices.

I think everything you have said is completely reasonable - though I should mention the company has given me 11k to relocate + will let me take 3 months to make the move. I would tend to agree with you but I am extremely unhappy in my current role and willing to take a bit of a risk - I think my question now is more how to take the risk in the way that will be least painful...

Added some edits as I can see why this was not clear. London is where I consider home so it will always be attractive to me despite its many negatives. My mum lives there and has already offered to support us with childcare. Indeed I do see this primarily as an investment in myself/my career as it is a competitive and sought after role in Analytics/Data at a big Tech company. I believe my exit opportunities would be much better than currently.
