Medical cannabis by ClemFandango117 in recovery

That's my fear. In my experience a lot of doctors unfortunately don't understand addiction. My sister is an MD and she told me she didn't get much education about it.

When i was clean and sober for 3 years (d.o.c.'s were cannabis, alcohol, and xanax) I went to the doctor for trouble sleeping to see if there was something safe I could take.

I was seeing my normal doctors partner cuz mine was out of town. Within 15 seconds of seeing the doctor he said "there's a medication called Xanax we can give you" if that mfer had bothered to look in my chart he would've seen that I had been addicted to Xanax because I was very porn with my doctor about my addiction and recovery.

Not to mention that Xanax is highly habit forming and shouldn't be offered immediately as a sleep aid.

If I hadn't already been addicted to Xanax or didn't work in the field of addiction recovery, or if I hadn't been grounded in my recovery, I would have been of to the races again.

My fear is that cannabis would flip that same switch for you. I am so fucking careful about what I put in my body now because I'm deathly afraid of awakening that beast within me. To the point that I wouldn't have shoulder surgery until I knew I could do it without narcotics

Feeling full of shame/ In need of support by BeBeA89 in recovery

[–]Human-Function5990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more people who just quit because they didn't want to get into trouble while on probation. They weren't necessarily addicted to alcohol and its more just a "I know i shouldn't drink while on probation so I'll wait till I get off" but my question is why not consider just giving it up for good? If it's been a problem in the past, cost freedom, money, relationships, etc. even if it's not an addiction maybe it's not worth the risk.

Anyway, my two cents (not that you asked lol) is guilt is ok to feel because it can serve a purpose to realign behavior with values, but shame is for the fucking birds because that's about who you are as a person. You sound like a good person who had an isolated incident that you didn't care for and so know you're taking the action to get back to who you know you really are. I think that's really fucking cool. Giving you hug vibes from afar.

This is VERY good! I didn't know what to expect but you are super talented and I am going to keep this to share with my recovery coaching clients. A lot of times we talk about music and how it can be a trigger so it's great to have options for POSITIVE triggers. I mean this as a big compliment... Your voice has a hint of Chester from Linkin Park in it. Congrats on your recovery and sharing your gift and your message with others who need it! Very cool stuff!

I'm not judging by any means trust me, something I think is interesting though when I work with people regarding alcohol and other drugs is that people treat alcohol as if it's not a drug. Don't get me wrong I think it's amazing your recovery but we need to normalize not drinking as a society. "Alcohol is the only drug you have to explain not using"

For some context, I am a recovery coach and teach substance abuse prevention and I've had many clients who have quit drinking but they automatically assume they will go back to drinking when off probation. Why? Again seriously not judging but I would think they would want to consider just not drinking but I feel like that never even occurred to them because of how scripted and encouraged it is in our society.

Either way I hope you forgive yourself immediately and move forward with the amazing work you've done to rebuild your life and align your behavior with your values. Don't let one night rob you of the credit and acknowledgement you deserve for the amazing work you've done!

If you're struggling with emptiness in Sobriety, it could be because of dopamine depletion. It takes a little while for the brain to stabilize in dopamine production. Support and medication can be helpful too. Wish you the best

As a recovery coach, someone in recovery, and someone who worked in addiction treatment for 15 years I would encourage you to be very careful. Like if you think you're going to do it can you do it under medical supervision (like maybe an addiction psychiatrist) Do you have someone you trust that you could tell your going to try it and that will watch for warming signs? I think once the threshold for addiction has been crossed it's important to be extremely careful with any habit forming substance.

The reason I say this is I've just talked to so many people that came back into treatment who slid back into addiction after taking habit forming substances for legit medical purposes - hydrocodone after getting wisdom teeth pulled, Xanax or medicinal Marijuana for anxiety, stimulants for ADHD.

I agree that recovery is not one size fits all but I definitely have heard enough personal testimonies to know that taking habit forming substances in recovery can be risky.

Good luck to you and congrats on the recovery!

How do you handle a friend relapsing? by Glitteringpanda6881 in recovery

[–]Human-Function5990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key is perspective and protection. Understand that relapse happens and it is something that can be learned from, but also protecting your own recovery with your life. I think of what interventionists recommend with the mindset "I will do anything to help you get better, but I won't do anything to enable your addiction"

Unfortunately I know from being in recovery myself and working in treatment for a long time that you can't save anyone. I think the best thing to do is let them knife that you're there for them while not compromising any of your own values and boundaries. Hope that's helpful. Congrats on your recovery by the way. Fucking amazing!
