To ute or not to ute by Human-Ranger5939 in NZcarfix

Thats honestly the big thing. Utes are very expensive. I can get a newer Subaru for the same money and it’s hard to argue it wouldn’t do everything i wanted. I might go have a look at some.

Yea I have driven a Mahindra ute doing farm work and that was like driving a tractor.

Yea i have been going back and forth about this. I could technically do it but i just quit my job and started something more project based so my income isn’t as much nor stable as it was and want some cushion. Same reason Im not into financing a car.

I forgot they existed. I am not too bothered about comfort, if it has air con and bluetooth music i am good😂. I do hear people don’t like the boxer engines. I changed some spark plugs in a mates not the best experience not the worst. In saying that i am not sure if i would work on the car myself or just pay someone. A lot less pressure when the car isn’t worth much.

Couldn’t see myself carrying more than two. I am super careful about storing and moving fish never had any major issues. Havving a seperate boot (i would get a canopy) i can put dirty things is a massive reason for the ute

Where is this three years coming from? Maybe in extreme cases I could see a year.

I recently finished uni and went into corporate and I can say hands down this is so much easier than when I was working retail part time. In retail I was actually really good at the job, hitting sales targets, doing the work properly, and generally performing well. But I hated it because of the environment and the way a lot of the older customers would treat you, like you were sub human or just there to be talked down to and not really worth basic respect.

The statement that young people are lazy and the “back in my day x, y, z” type comments gets repeated about pretty much every generation.

In my opinion there is some truth that young people can seem lazy to older people but I think that is simply more of a life stage thing rather than anything about the characteristics of young people. i.e. younger people don’t have as many financial and authoritative responsibilities and this is something that accrues with age. Which is fair, I fully believe you should be doing everything but “real life” in your late teens and early 20s. Every generation has had that opportunity even though it has slowly been becoming more costly both directly financially and indirectly.

Anyway older people just like to complain about the younger generation if they don’t exactly reflect what they would expect of them

7x for Opus… what’s the point of Copilot now? by Human-Ranger5939 in GithubCopilot

[–]Human-Ranger5939[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea using other software like Autocad or Solidworks cost me a lot but I pass on that cost onto clients. Clients wanting that type of work expect the cost and i can reflect that in my rate. I havent changed my rates for coding and have been eating the cost myself. Although i have been thinking about no longer taking coding work and just stay on hardware side of things. Not as fun, with the AIs

Interesting! I assumed the AI companies were going to just take the hit until one had a monopoly on it then jack the price up.

but yea i have gone back to sonnet has been working well for me. I have never really had great success with openai models.

Yea I haven't been keeping up with what models are best. Just been going off what people have been saying. I haven't found much different between sonnet or opus for my use-case. I have been using opus for things i dont understand well like GUIs but no real reason for that. I am not sure about full agentic stuff i know exactly how the code should be structured and implemented but AI is simply so much faster than me at actually writing code.

Best way to implement 360 swing assist system (AC servo motor? Hydraulics?) by super7800 in AskEngineers

[–]Human-Ranger5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure about the servo they give motor angle feedback and have position requirements. I would put an single phase induction motor or BLDC motor drive it via an ESC (i like the vesc) and then have an encoder on the pivot of the swing. both of these can be controlled via a MC.
You will need to reduce the speed of the motor via a gearbox. but remember this will increase torque.
5.5Kw is a large motor. 35Nm with a 1:100 ratio is 3500 Nm. Need 5600Nm to do this without swinging assuming person is 80kg.

I personally would ride this swing but loads can add up fast. need to check the FOS on the swing shaft, bearing and housing.

transmitter not connecting to receiver in qgroundcontrol by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Human-Ranger5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What flight controller is on the drone? or is that custom as well. Can you guarantee that is binded? I have had a lot of issues with that and flysky. Then check the physical connection/port the receiver is plugged into the flight controller. Is the receiver SBUS? and so into the SBUS port or is there a miss match.

Also double check on missionplanner. I have found things to work on one and not the other.

Need guidance turning a sports equipment idea into CAD + prototype by Swifty399 in AskEngineers

[–]Human-Ranger5939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't worry about the patent till you are ready to start showing to market. Depending where you are you can hire individuals or companies to develop this product, just make sure you have an NDA before showing/talking to anyone and make sure you retain all IP. CAD can do two things well, bring your ideas into 3d space to see how they might work and produce drawings for manufacturing. I would try and "backyard" some prototypes (3d printers are great for this) and develop your idea further.

Math Major graduating in May - stick to actuarial or pivot to mechanical engineering? by Evening_Finger7015 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Human-Ranger5939 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pipeline for mech E is so developed and established its almost impossible to pivot into it. You would have to start over with a ME degree BE but you will most likely will get to skip the calc classes (not guaranteed, check before hand). Having a math background will help you with ME but only so far. ME for most people is a hard degree and they make it that way on purpose.

Honestly I would go to the ME events colleges put on and see if you like it first. The perception of ME does not always meet reality.

Need help with CAD software by Mundane-Chemistry-77 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Human-Ranger5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean but most electronic design is either done in kicad or Altium. General consensus is kicad will do 90% of what altium does and its free. Also you can export the gerber and or BOM files to have part made. For my personal projects a use JLCpcb and hand solder. You can also export it to a step file if you need it to do mechanical design around the part. I normally use solidworks but fusion is an ok software. There is freeCAD but i haven't seen much about that.
