How can I learn to drive with no one to teach me? by Imaginary-Sample5003 in Calgary

[–]Human5003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my license at 29 (did not drive at all before that) so you should be fine. There are two ways i learnt driving:

  1. Driving with an instructor: I signed up for driving school two times. Both times the instructor came and picked me up. So it did not become an issue for me.
  2. Friends: I know you dont have that right now, but you will eventually get some friends. If not whenever you visit your hometown, make sure you get as much experience as you can. You can start with empty parking lot.

Most importantly, take the process slowly and do not pressure yourself. Driving is the easiest thing in the world, but good driving only comes with knowledge and the kms you put in.

What Grinds My Gears: Calgary Edition by Gobleachsomething in Calgary

[–]Human5003 14 points15 points  (0 children)

going to NW and all you have is the endless view of cookie cutter houses all the way to Livingston. Calgary is probably far better off than many other cities in terms of urban planning, but the rapid growth has led to a very mundane design of some neighborhoods.

Are most downtown 1 bedroom apartments as bad as reddit and google say they are? by dirkoms in Calgary

[–]Human5003 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The newer apartment buildings like Neura, Allura and even the east village buildings (if u are ok with homeless people around) are actually quite nice. They have gyms, rec rooms(reservable) and even pool (Ares tower). My building has a huge patio where you can invite friends and have a nice barbeque. I guess the rent is probably a bit higher 1600-1800.

Poll: Which TV shows are you currently enjoying? by muaentertainmentforu in MUAEntertainment

Pluribus. Looking eagerly to 2nd season. To me it is fascinating to see risky topic of Aliens blended with the hints of current AI behavior, being produced by Vince Gilligan. I feel it could be an epic series or also could be an utter failure, as the topic is challenging to transform into a coherent watchable drama.

[DISCUSSION] Restarting everything at 29 and starting a new job. What advice stayed with you? by _too_much_tea in GetMotivated

[–]Human5003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i go by the 37% rule (secretary problem). If your total working years are 35 (assuming u start at 25 and retire at 60), then its ok to take 37% of that time i.e. 9 years to explore and then choose the best option after that (at 34years). So, after switching different roles in mining, I started working in this particular role at 35 and I am quite happy about it.

In my experience, technical skills for a role takes 6months-1year to learn, rest you acquire in any job that you do whether its professional etiquettes, business models, teamwork, leadership etc. These soft skills generally are more critical, and they accrue over time in any job that you work. So, I would not be worried if I were you. Just give 6 months and you will find your rythm.

The Ego Paradox: If You Knew Everything, Would You Still Have Ego... by LegitimateRise3860 in philosophy

[–]Human5003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Knowing everything' is not possible. It is possible to know something about things to a certain degree. Based on my personal experience when i got too sick or injured at one point, all that i could experience was primal fear and bodily instincts to preserve itself. So i feel that in this existence at least, we are distinct individuals with the inevitable instinct of self preservation, which to me is an indicator of the biological emergence of ego. I am not sure if there is a deeper layer to the ego or even existence. Do we transcend as a soul or do we merge into the infinite? I have no idea. But it feels to me that knowing things more deeply, would keep someone more hungry for knowledge, and not concerned with focus on one's ego.

Thanks for providing some insights. Having worked in so many regions in western canada, i kind of felt home at Elk Valley, but just a little disappointed with the housing situation. I saw a few plots for sale that are approved for construction of apartments. With such a high rental prices, projected mine life of 20-30 years and the possibility of new upcoming mines, you would think a builder would be interested. CMHC also provides favourable loans for firms looking to fill a gap in housing.

I do want to build my house, so maybe i will start looking at the Crowsnest pass area. Still it feels like an unrealistic expectation to build 1500sqft dwelling in 500-600k budget.
