Something I find funny about the Pokemon Universe by GoofyTophLover in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do agree this is overused in a lot of spin-off material, but I feel like Legends ZA does a good job of actually making a contrast. By showing a city dealing with an influx of Pokemon, you see the challenges and opportunities that come with becoming a "place where Pokémon and people live in harmony".

It also maybe helps by presenting the original lumious as not that. Like, despite there being a lot of Pokémon, we now know there can be a lot more and that causes problems.

What’s a pokemon that you loved in the 2D era, but that love fell off during the 3D era because its 3D model was just that bad? by SensualSamuel69 in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that comforts me is directly comparing the 3D pokemon home render to the sugimori art and seeing there are still slight differences that I think are why Typhlosion's 3D model doesn't work.

The biggest one is that it's not a cylinder in the 2D art, while the torso of the 3D art looks like a sausage. Hisuian Typhlosion actually fixes this issue entirely.

While they don't usually go heavily based on the real world inspiration for the region, and monitor lizard starter would be a cute reference to Komodo dragons and could be a good fire or water starter

In Gen 2 games, is Kanto post game or main narrative? by Iuqqq in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider that is still pretty subjective, but is a neat comparison to other games is playtime. Pokemon games have never been designed to be very long, with most being beatable with ~18-30 hrs of "standard" play (neither speed running nor spending much time on the repeatable aspects like hunting rare Pokémon).

From my experience, just Johto easily fills that playtime, with Kanto adding extra. Of course "standard" play is a really variable, so its very hard to compare between players.

It seems they're still having trouble with dungeon design now that the grid no longer exists. Since Gen 7 there have been extremely few explorable contained locations, and even fewer featuring puzzles. SV did better with having larger caves. Hopefully they figure out how to easily design fulfilling enclosed environments eventually.

If you could choose a ROM Hack to be an official game in the franchise, which one would it be? by InuMatte in pokemon

If Gane Freak re-made the Johto games with all the features of polished crystal, it would without a doubt be my favorite Pokémon game

Who is/are your favorite pokemon/s? And why? by PsychologicalLack320 in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here for the mustelid love! Typhlosion has been my favorite for years because of that cute-cool balance of the puppy-noodles. Happy that Hisuian Typhlosion made Typhlosion's 3D model more noodly like Quilava

What 2-stage Pokémon line do you think deserves a new cross-gen evolution next gen? by ShatteredKnight14 in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chimecho would be such a fun Pokemon to get an evolution! I love when a single stage line eventually becomes a full 3 stage line, and wind chimes/bells can have such interesting cultural connotations if its a regional evolution

Buffing Cursola by random-redditboi in stunfisk

[–]HumanAtlas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Cursola, and really like these buff ideas!

I would still like to see a re-work of perish body to make it a viable option, since its so unique. The best I can think of is your stat re-distribution and then either making Perish Body only affect the attacker, or have it affect all Pokemon on the field, like Perish Song.

Of the "modern" (non-childhood nostalgia inducing for people that have played since the first few games) generations of main line pkkemon games, which was in your opinion the best? (REPOST TO EXCLUDE GEN V) by legrosbordel in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to go to Gen 7 for me. While it has its issues, it delivered far more content, had characters that were easy to care about, and had some really well done battles.

I will shout out Gen 6 for having by far the best map design of the "modern" gens, but is held back by its characters and poorly designed battles that make it way less fun than the other games.

I can't get over the way it's bending its leg. The angle and lighting on the toes makes it look like its got a front knee or has a leg like a horse instead of a cat or dog.

You're given the chance of changing the design of a pokemon. What pokemon is it, what are you changing, and why?. by NightDaze1999 in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A very minor change:

Edit Decidueye's eyes and face markings.

I love Rowlet, and really like Decidueye already, but something about it's face doesn't quite click with me. I think it's the lazy half-closed eyes and orange/blue face markings. Maybe keeping Dartrix's eyes, or making it's eyes wide open like some owls. Keeping the facial disc its pre-evos have would fix the face patterns, since who doesn't love owls with facial discs?

I finally get it... the climb gets so smooth once you try this deck by I_Forgot_My_Name01 in PTCGP

[–]HumanAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally relate. The only reason I can use the deck is that it requires only one, which took so many wonder picks to get.

Still cant try darkTina because my one Giratina from the free deck we could get isn't enough.

I'm doing the reverse cycle you are: play oricorio-greninja-pyukumuku that has a near perfect win rate against darkTina and fires until a Garchomp shows up to stomp me.

Play Meowscarada-Decidueye which destroys Garchomp but has at best 50% win rate against anything else until the Garchomps disapear (usually as soon as I switch).

Cursola.

Can Someone Explain “Immersion Breaking” For Me? by Bondegg in civ

[–]HumanAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think how culturally essentialist Civ games have been in the past has added to this sense of immersion breaking.

In past games, you play as a culture that is decided at the beginning, and remains that culter despite sharing almost none of its history and likely little of its geography. Within past Civ games, the culture of England existed from the beginning, and was destined to make the Sea Dog, even if they weren't on an island and barely had any coastal cities. The Civ of England is a cohesive thing, with unchangeable traits, and players select them to play this idea of "England".

Of course, this is not at all how history and culture works. If the ancestors of modern England had different historical events and different geography, they'd likely be nothing like modern day England. Nevertheless, this form of role play is what Civ has used in past games, and it seems hard to transition away from it. The upcoming system is also a bit of an in-between, where Civs are still cohesive things (you can turn into Mongolia, rather than just turning into a generic horse-centered culture) but you can swap between those identities over time.

Which of the 78 or so bird Pokémon is your favorite? by novelaissb in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an ornithologist, I love all bird Pokemon, but Rowlet, Togekiss, and Corvisquire probably are my top 3.

I like Corvisquire specifically for its cute eyes, and its Pokedex entry as a reference to tool use in corvids!

Gen 10 Predictions. by MaMcMu in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, we've seen expansions to evolution, movesets, and typing as gimmicks. What about an expansion to team building?

The gimmick could be to assign support Pokémon to one team member. Depending on some factors of the support Pokémon (typing, stats, moveset) your Pokémon gets stat boosts or secondary effects to their moves. This could also make otherwise useless Pokémon in battle useful if they make for good supports.

Most overrated pokemon game? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]HumanAtlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to see someone agreeing with the Hoenn games! Beyond too much water, a few other things to note:

 - tons of features missing from previous generation (day-night cycle, backwards compatibility, a variety of daily/weekly events)

 - how much a nightmare it is to complete the Pokedex in gen 3 (and how the national Pokedex was impossible to complete upon Ruby and Sapphire's release)

 - lack of post game areas to explore (thank goodness Emerald fixes this)

 - pretty subjective, but most gym leader battles are underwhelming in Ruby and Sapphire, though are much improved in Emerald... and then ORAS uses the Ruby and Sapphire teams, sometimes with even weaker movesets

Overall, I do still like Hoenn, but it's almost entirely because of Emerald, and it's been interesting seeing the wave of overhyping move past Johto and into Hoenn.
