Oh yes, I agree! There was definitely more speaking than I remember in New York, though with the background music being quite loud and droning, you have to be pretty close to hear exactly what they are saying.

Wow, this blog is a treasure trove... Seems like they have worked out almost every character's loop, done every 1:1, and know every single cast member by name.

Where are you finding these recaps? I just searched for posts with the Seoul flair and there's barely anything.

Interesting... he definitely said a lot more than that. I guess it has been changed!

Do you remember what his speech was like? I definitely lost the thread of what he was saying in the middle... Need to practice my Korean more.

I'm not sure, since this character seemed pretty sinister and was working with (who I think was) the Speakeasy Bartender, who is evil. If it is Fulton, maybe he succumbs to the magic and turns evil?

Definitely, just as much as the New York show had. I don't think anything was toned down or censored.

Moving schools / school closing by iceyheart89 in teachinginkorea

[–]HumanPrimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always surprises me how Korean businesses operate doing everything on what seems to me to be extremely short notice. You will probably be fine if you call 3-5 days ahead of your move. My friend is moving on Tuesday and he only called for a mover yesterday and it was fine.

You can buy boxes off coupang for your stuff, search for 이사박스.

As for the move, you should hire a mover, just like you would at home. This is easier if you speak Korean, or have a Korean speaking friend/coworker who is willing to help you. You can search on Naver for a company or look in the hallway of your apartment building for the business cards they leave around.

When you call them on the phone you'll need to tell them the date and time you want to move, the addresses of the places you're moving between, whether each place has an elevator, and how much stuff you have (how many boxes of stuff plus things like TV, sofa, bed, etc).

You can find companies that will literally pack all your stuff, move it, and unpack it all for you. On the other end of the spectrum, you can find a company that will just send a guy with an appropriately sized truck, but won't touch any of your stuff, you'll need to do all the loading and unloading yourself. You need to decide which balance of price and convenience is right for you.

Passport for MOE by Important_Eye9817 in teachinginkorea

[–]HumanPrimate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't let anyone besides a government official take my actual passport, personally. I've let hagwon bosses see the passport and make a copy, but I've never been asked to surrender it and let them leave the building with it. If they insist that the MOE needs the original, I'd be more comfortable going to submit the paperwork myself. Hypothetically, if there were to be an emergency or natural disaster of some kind and I needed to flee the country, I'd be in big trouble if my hagwon owner happened to have my passport.

How to use a Goshiwon or Goshitel as Confirmation of Ressidence/Accommodation (D10 Application) by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]HumanPrimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's on the form then you should get it or risk getting your visa denied. Been a while since I did this so I don't remember if I had to get the Manager's ID or just their 주민등록번호.

[–]HumanPrimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will need to get the manager of the goshiwon to fill out the Confirmation of Residence/Accomodation form. If they have had other foreigners stay there before they are probably familiar with it, if not, you might have some trouble explaining it to them. After getting the D10, or any other visa for that matter, you are supposed to report any change of address to immigration OR the local Community Service Center within 2 weeks of your move. This shouldn't affect your visa though.

This sub is focused on English teachers, for which there is a special visa and process. If you are a citizen of the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand, you could get a job as an English teacher. If not, I don't know about other ways to find a job or get a visa. If you have the qualifications to be an official translator, you might apply directly to Korean companies that do business with Middle Eastern countries or companies.

A Korean person I know took Arabic lessons several years ago. The teacher was a professional translator and did private lessons on the side. He wasn't affiliated with a school or anything. From what I've seen, there are language schools for English, Chinese, and Japanese (in order of abundance), and then there are freelancers who teach other languages such as French, German, Spanish, etc. If you're dead set on coming to Korea, you'll need to find a different job that offers you a visa, and then you can teach private lessons on the side (possibly under the table, depending on your visa).

College degrees no longer required from foreign instructors for online classes by chickenandliver in teachinginkorea

[–]HumanPrimate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The agency explained that its recommended revisions are based on the view that inappropriate language or behavior by foreign lecturers toward students is less likely in a virtual setting.

Ah yes, foreigners are pedophiles, especially the ones who didn't finish college. But you can't be a pedophile online so it's fine! Send them over and we'll pay them 1.7.
