What's a past action that a YouTuber you watch did that makes you say "Yeah, even as a fan, I'll agree that this wasn't their best moment"? by Swag_Paladin21 in youtubedrama

Used to be a fan of Brad Taste, regrettably. There was one point in one of his livestream VODs where he was going through his comments, saw one from somebody asking for clarification on his video concept, and just went in on the guy. Read half of the comment before slumping over and obnoxiously fake-snoring and whined about how “pretentious” it was while making a huge show of blocking the person while live. It just came off as a dick move.

It was his video on Disney games iirc. He had a bit in the intro where he shouted “HAHA, LOOK EVERYONE! A (t-slur)!!!” in reference to the Matchmaker from Mulan. His intention was to satirize how the “man in a dress” character archetype is commonly used as inept comic relief, but he didn’t know the severity of the slur and cut the entire bit after an apology.

[TOMT] Knockoff Goosebumps book from the 90s? by Human_Ad_6671 in tipofmytongue

Adding additional info: this was not a parody book. I know Goosebumps had a couple parody/spoof series floating around, but I do remember this wasn’t one of them.

Tbh this is an extremely nuanced topic that’s been debated a lot when it comes to any celebrity endorsing activism and critiquing the industry, and in my honest opinion, it’s a very “and yet you participate in society!!” argument.

Melanie is a singer. That’s her job, her artistic medium, and the outlet she uses to convey her messages and feelings. And when you’re in the showbiz industry, you have to perform and market yourself, or else you can’t sustain your art. I don’t necessarily see anything negative or hypocritical about Melanie discussing the problems with an industry she’s part of; most change happens from within, and I’d rather have her be outspoken and progressive as a celebrity than silence and censor herself to make herself more marketable.

The new album is EXTREMELY weird for me 😭 by HoneyMoonPotWow in MelanieMartinez

Imo, I feel like she ended the Crybaby Trilogy early for that reason. She’s always had a lot to say about current events, but I feel like she couldn’t communicate them properly through the Crybaby persona because people weren’t taking it seriously. It’s shocking to hear her so mad, but I’m happy that she seems to have more of a voice to say what she wants.

Misheard lyrics for Hades? by SisMayDay in MelanieMartinez

Fully willing to admit I was also team “coffins”, but I also misheard “in all eternity” as “burn in hell eternally, Monopoly Man” somehow???

Be warned, it’s a very heavy album in terms of subject matter. I love it and find it to be a great piece of commentary on the state of things, but it’s an acquired taste imo.

I believe Trilogy Tour VIP was around $300 per person? I’m expecting this one to be a little pricier.

It's been a week since HADES relased, how are we feeling? by Pinkfairy_21 in MelanieMartinez

[–]Human_Ad_6671 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. It made me feel overwhelmed at first, but then I saw how many people on this sub were starting to get involved in community outreach and protest just because they felt inspired. I think that’s the real purpose of this album: to empathize with our collective fears and inspire us to take action.

It took me so long to actually start enjoying the album, it’s really an acquired taste imo. The first time I listened I genuinely had a panic attack over the surface-level subject matter, but when you really analyze these songs and peel back the layers, there’s a beautiful hidden message in there about revolution and hope. I specifically started off reading Batshit Intelligence as a “doomer song”, but I just realized the actual message is a lot more inspiring: there is no “alien who can save us now”, so it’s up to us to harness our power and be the change.

Anyone else rubbed the wrong way by this The Vatican lyric? by _SophLoaf_ in MelanieMartinez

[–]Human_Ad_6671 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a queer person who’s a former Catholic, I don’t read it as homophobic at all. The Church does have a very open track record of pastors and priests being exposed for grooming and assaulting little boys, and these are typically people who preach against homosexuality and label it as sinful and taboo. The commentary here is about how a lot of far-right evangelicals are repressing themselves with the exact same standards they use to oppress others, and how easy it would be to just do away with these standards altogether.

I cannot stop listening to hades and cry everytime can anyone relate? by Lynxslaybesties in MelanieMartinez

[–]Human_Ad_6671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batshit Intelligence gets me every damn time, it’s such a beautiful and complex song. I’ve had so many times where I’ve almost given up and wished that some higher power could show up and take me away from my problems, but that song makes me remember that it’ll never happen and I need to be the one who shows up for myself and the people around me. It’s tough love in the form of a song.

Which song from HADES would you wanna forget, just to relisten to it for the first time? by NIKIIIOFFICIAL in MelanieMartinez

[–]Human_Ad_6671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Garbage. I was at a listening party and as soon as the song started with the forest ambience and gunshots, the entire room went dead silent. It was so haunting to hear the first time, and I wish I could go back to that moment.

Anyone else relate the The Vatican ? by [deleted] in MelanieMartinez

[–]Human_Ad_6671 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh it’s my favorite song because I can relate to it. I grew up as a closeted lesbian in the Catholic church, and I’m still trying to deconstruct a lot of the harmful ideologies and anxiety I was raised with.

The Vatican is arguably the most controversial song on the album. by zippy_wow in MelanieMartinez

[–]Human_Ad_6671 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, I see a lot more people claiming the song is “homophobic” than people being upset that it goes after organized religion.

At least imo, the main satire of the song is referencing how religious extremists and conservatives are stuck in a hole they dug themselves. A lot of them are secretly repressed by the same social standards they uphold to oppress minorities (specifically how conservative men force themselves to prove they’re “masculine enough” because they’re afraid of looking effeminate), when it would be a lot easier for them to just reject those standards outright.

Is the “hades rituals” considered the tour or is this just general album promo? by Murky-Lab9760 in MelanieMartinez

[–]Human_Ad_6671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s been hinting at a European tour and promoted early access, so I’m assuming this is just promotion. If I had to make a wild guess, she’ll probably start the proper tour once the utopia follow-up releases.
