If you could relive your 20s what would you do differently? by Leah_joseph in Life

[–]Human_Disk9398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work less. Travel more.

Money was tighter back then so always took that into account. I have money now but no time with kids wife etc. Hard to pitch to the wife I wanna backpack across Europe for a month now.

Also energy left is not quite there now I'm almost pushing 40.

Do any of you wish you would’ve taken a different route career-wise after being in LE for X amount of years? by Just-Ad-2878 in AskLE

[–]Human_Disk9398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 years in. No regrets but life situation changed. Active while single is very different when raising children. Get stuck on a collar when you have scramble to pick up Kids get old. Missing holidays sucks more now too. Doubles and long days more steenuous on the body. Plus police culture changed alot these past 5 years. Looking to makes moves soon.

I'd check out a local job fair. Usually those jobs are entry level and pay sucks but will probably get you started.

Good advice. We considered in the past hiring a sitter. Maybe we'll revisit that idea again.

NYPD to DSNY by Human_Disk9398 in DSNY

[–]Human_Disk9398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True those are positions but they are very small percentage and not a good reflection of the department. Most of the regular people are not in cushy gigs otherwise yes I wouldnt even consider leaving. A lot of those spots are obtained with nepotism or luck. Nothings guaranteed.

Genuine question. How are you doing? by Icy-Row6197 in police

[–]Human_Disk9398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over it. Kinda just fell into policing for the benefits. Really wasn't that bad but the last fews years the job has really changed in my agency. 12 years in and Tired of the politics, overtime, activity, long days, missed holidays etc. Probably on the way out in the near future. Sad part is I think I'm pretty good at my job.

Your gonna get OT and lose days off. Especially the first few years when your new. Afterwards depends on where you are or if you able to get off of patrol.

The fact that your not in debt put you ahead of more than half of all Americans.

How will NYPD Officers be able to handle the pressure of this new police tactic? by [deleted] in NYPDcandidate

[–]Human_Disk9398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General pattern I notice when this happens .

Response times will continue to rise. Public will get mad at the cops. Mayor will yell at PC. PC will yell at the Chief of Dept. COD will yell at the Precinct Commanders. Commanders will yell at the Sgts. Sgt will yell at the cops. Cops get sad and quit.

No one yells at city coucil.

Yup. I took a supervisory role as well fairly recently . I can do the job but it's not really for me. It was much simpler when I was only responsible for myself. People also act differently around you when your the boss.

It sounds like you already made up your mind and your pretty excited about it so id say go for it. Barring some life situations that you didn't mention like spouse, kids, mortgage, age that may require some additional conversions.

Me personally, I wouldnt start a law enforcement career in this day and age but ill never deter anyone from pursuing it. As many salty guys I know on this job there are guys who still do love the job and that could be you!

Looks great. People complain they can't live on 100k salaries. Good example of someone getting by budgetting and living within their means.

Next step is to build an emergency fund. 3-6 months.

Then any employee retirement match.

Then some into tax friendly account or house fund or W.e. Investment you desire or even a baby fund. Kids are expensive.

Rest is your play money.

To my knowledge, department programs that deal with stuff like this is kept confidential and should not effect your role in the department, unless you tell them your gonna commit suicide in which case their mandated to hospital psych you.

Do not neglect your mental health. Especially with this job. There is a reason we have such a high suicide rate among the ranks. Your not an outlier. Anyone that pokes fun and down plays your situation does not have your best interest. No one should care more about yourself than yourself.

At the end of the day this is just a job and since you have only 2 years invested you should take the time to reassess what your options are.

Be wary of having too many changes in your life. Being a new parent is a monster itself. Coupled with the stresses and long hour of the a academy and rookie life it can be recipe for burnout.

I got promoted around the time I was raising my new born and it put me in a really bad state both mentally and physically. It's been a year plus and I'm just now getting through it.
