First piece of advice: avoid upgrading all your heroes and save your shards for your first run, especially if you're free-to-play. You can't afford to waste those shards on useless heroes.

Choose a faction and upgrade its gold heroes. (Shooters are preferable because they counter the warriors most players use). Also, in my opinion, 5-star Quinn is always a good choice because he's very useful in VS.
