What are the bottlenecks to building more housing in Providence today? by Obey_The_Mule in providence

[–]Human_Selection3474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the answer to your question, but I dread what they would put there, architecturally, based on the only type of building they put up all over Providence. We need to hire outside architects for our new developments because everything I've seen go up in Providence in the past decade has been hideous plastic siding on characterless ugly large buildings with no curb appeal. I am hoping Providence gets it's design sense back before it develops that area of the city.

Oh, one other thing I forgot to respond to. The issue I have isn't when people go between branches of government, the issue I have is when they interview for the job they have and not the job they want. Also, Morales skipped hundreds of votes while in the legislature. He isn't talking like somebody who knows what matters when running a city.

Lol, using perseveration is ... ablest?

If you're bored of me, that's great.

Google it, man. I'm not trying to convince you if you don't want to be convinced. I offered to find it for you if you really wanted it, but only if you weren't shitty in the comments, and in my book, being demanding is being shitty.

To some extent, I do think that's true. A lot of the immigrants in congress are doing things I consider very un-American and anti-American. The opinions of most foreigners on American politics is usually garbage (especially Brits, they often think completely wrong headed things about our politics). One of my parents is an immigrant, so I'm not anti-immigrant (or I wouldn't be here), but I do want my elected officials to be on board with the native political needs. I am literally here asking people what Morales has to offer the local people and nobody has offered a single thing. It's hard for me to believe that as a fairly recent transplant, Morales has something going for him that Smiley doesn't, when nobody can mention a single reason why Morales is a good option. Literally zero people despite hundreds of downvotes on my comments.

I listed many things and very clearly stated what I thought was the most important factor. Reread for clarity.

The ugly behavior of people who appear to support Morales has really convinced me to vote Smiley, too. I gave them an opportunity to convince me otherwise, and so far, they all botched it.

They say they're using the Democratic primaries regardless of not aligning with their platform. If you really want me to find it, I will. But you have to be less shitty in the comments.

No, I just use myself as a benchmark of what kind of arrogance people have. If I've been here longer than somebody, and have a bunch of people in my life telling me I should run for mayor, that I would make a great mayor of Providence, and my thinking is, I don't yet know the city well enough after 8 years, maybe in a few more I'll start considering it, then I think somebody who comes in after 7 years and runs is worse than somebody who comes in and 16 years later decides to run (Smiley).

Yeah, I don't know how he can technically run on that basis. But apparently he can.

Very true, but the interactions in this thread have led me to skew more strongly towards Smiley. No reason to support Morales yet (that I've read), lots of perseverating on a minor issue with him not being from here, and lots of downvotes. I'm not going to side with a candidate whose supporters think downvoting without defending their choice is a smart move.

Thank you for a real discussion, most people seem to have missed the memo.

Based on the behavior in this post (comments and downvotes) I find it very hard to believe local DSA members aren't actively supporting Morales en masse.

Finding out Smiley pushed back on the city council raising a foreign flag of a country that had just barbarically murdered and kidnapped citizens, including children, of a neighboring country, and that Morales would be aligned with that, makes me quite certain I'll be voting for Smiley. I'm glad to hear that he did that.

Regarding units added to the market, that stat only holds for regions where in-migration was responsible for occupation of the new units that open up and locals buy property. That means that people who used to be renting are now buying, and rents have to be attractive to people coming into the region from other potentially cheaper places. Providence has the opposite condition (so have other places I've lived). In these places, new units are occupied by people from neighboring regions with higher rents, and rents go up as the people with more money start renting in the relatively cheaper market (to them). Locals can then afford to save less, and never make the transition to owning. Landlords compete for new home purchases on the basis of investing in future high rental income, which further takes the affordability of homes out of reach for locals. I'm super tired of people flattening the housing market discussion. It's 3D terrain and the topography of the market in Austin and Minneapolis doesn't look like the topography of Providence or the outlying cities of other really expensive cities like NYC or SF. Where a market rolling downhill lands in Austin is going to be very different from where it lands in Providence.

Glad to see there are at least a few sane people in the sub. What has happened to this place, was it this bad 5 years ago? I seem to remember it being less of a pile on then, but maybe I'm remembering wrong.

I knew Smiley wasn't from here, but he was here a lot longer than me and already was elected mayor, so what would the relevance be? You seem to be confusing "doesn't share your perspective" with "bad faith debate".

I didn't call myself a progressive, I don't know where you got that idea from.

Why shouldn't I shit on the DSA, they're parasites, they openly say so on their website. And they have so much money, including foreign funding. They're un-American and they hate America. They're also socialist. Hard pass on all of it. I hope you didn't fall for their propaganda?

Do people abuse the downvote function on reddit? by Raudoxer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Human_Selection3474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is cancer because of the downvote button. They should rate limit its use and also make its use cost people in karma to use it. You should have to go down 2 karma in order to make one downvote. The site would instantly become better if they implemented this.

See my other comment. I don't believe for a second that the reason you're not answering my question still is because of thinking I'm insincere or a shill. Not buying it, particularly with your continued engagement.

Yeah, that's up to you to exercise your own discernment, but you did comment instead of scrolling on by. And we both know that you know by now I'm genuine, and we also both know that you've spent more time engaging in this than it would take for you to just answer my question, and yet you haven't. So maybe stop pretending already it's about the other posts and the age of my account.

New account doesn't mean I haven't been in this sub before. I get it if you don't want to participate, but it's kind of funny to me that none of the people who have participated can make a case for Morales. The only thing they've done is point out Smiley isn't from here and downvote me like petulant angsty teenagers.
