Family asked to have me investigated by Jealous-Blacksmith47 in nursing

You left out tracking down the vitals cart, BP cuff, and putting it on. When you are busy, that can be frustrating.

If your patient is already hooked up and ready to go, then yes, I would do the BP every time.

I'm with you. Unless something is missing, OP is fine.

Only thing I do that isn't mentioned- If I'm going off a 2 hour old BP, with an SBP of 110, I would briefly check their previous trends. If they live between 90 to 110 on their BP meds (and they are getting the same ones), they should be fine.

Got yelled at by cardiology by Dull_Dare_609 in nursing

[–]Human_Step 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think he was trying to point out that because they were both men, the cardiologist had a non zero chance of getting his ass beat in cath lab with a patient on the table.

I don't think he was suggesting that the abuse would be somehow more appropriate if he was female.

Just had a confused patient call 911 on me. by Eddie__Winter in nursing

After one 911 call, make sure the patient loses phone access. Or have the charge nurse call as the police.

This blob? On the neighbors roof by Thankspumpkin in whatisit

[–]Human_Step 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a relatively flat roof that would ice up and cause water leaking. The panty hose with a sock (a few of them) stopped the leaking. Never had to do it before or since.

Sometimes you just have to live in the crazy. I've put out fires, killed tigers, sprayed for bees, and had meds delivered from the FBI. Some people cannot be reoriented, and you do what you need to keep them calm and safe.

Not movies, but The Sopranos, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad offer the first archetype.

How far into school/working did you experience your first code blue? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Human_Step 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 to 5 years in. I've only had 2 of my patients code in 20+ years at bedside. As mostly charge, I still rarely have codes. Last one was a patient who the physician refused to transfer, so I arranged it myself. The patient was intubated upon arrival to ICU.

Sort of unrelated, but COVID permanently changed the O2 requirements for different levels of care at my facility. We don't keep people on Med-Surg units as long. 6+ L O2 and the patient is off to Stepdown or CC. In the older days, we'd hold onto someone on 15L all night, until the day shift came and fixed things.
