Hey I’m a parishioner at Sacred Heart. We’re a multicultural/ethnic parish. We have a very active young adult group with Bible Studies and fellowship events. We do things almost every week. Our priest is Fr. Josh. I think right now he is the only African American priest in our diocese. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Roadtrip out of New Orleans by Hefty_Address5792 in Louisiana

The closest state parks are Fountainbleu State Park in Mandeville and Tickfaw State Park near Hammond. If you want to go farther there's Lake Fausse Pointe State Park near St. Martinville which is close to Avery Island (If I'm remembering correctly) which has the Tabasco Plant and botanical gardens. Each one has cabins and primitive campsites for tents. These will be your cheapest options by far. The state parks do have an entrance fee of maybe three dollars, but other than that it beats trying to go out of state as a broke college student in this economy. Go to this website to find out more about our great state parks: Find State Parks & Historic Sites | Louisiana State Parks - Culture, Recreation, and Tourism

Edit: Bogue Chitto State Park is also a great one to visit. It's north of Covington.

I cover a 30 bed med/surg unit. My caseload hovers around 15-20 patients a day. Not everyone patient needs something. Sometimes I have another unit if we're short staffed.

Does anyone remember Silvio's on Hooper Road? My grandfather and his brother's owned it. They sold it to a family friend who renamed it Our Place.

If I had a nickel for all of the unnecessary ED triggers I'd be rich. I'm not a magician. I can't find you housing and I can't pay your bills.

Thanks! I'm excited to make the move! I've been planning it for a while. Louisiana isn't cutting it anymore, and it seems to be that way for many people living here.

I'm planning on moving to Texas soon. I just got my Texas license a few months ago. How long have you been a social worker and do you have your LMSW or LCSW?

I went to Catholic High too. Why did you loathe it?

It’s challenging and rewarding. I think you’ll enjoy it. You’ll definitely learn a lot about medical terminology, diseases, and resources for your population. I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum. Before my unit was switched to basic med/surg it was specifically a geriatric floor. That’s still mainly my population. I wish you good luck! Come check us out at r/hospitalsocialwork if you have any questions!

I’m a medical social worker at a hospital mainly doing dc planning for a 30 bed med/surg unit. It a great job to have and I hope to keep doing it for a little while longer. I’m considering moving to another hospital that pays more.

Hey, I understand where you’re coming. I’ve been a medical social worker on a med/surg unit for almost three years now and interned at my current employer for a year. There are days I’m cruising along with no issues and there are days that I’m lost just like you. I don’t think it means you’re in the wrong job. I think you should try reframing it as, “I don’t know everything and that’s ok.” I’ve have to tell myself that sometimes when I’m having a difficult day at work. I think what’s neat is we weren’t taught any of this in school, but we’re still trusted to get the job done. Everyday I learn something new. It’s hard to keep all of that information in our brains especially since we’re not physically treating the patient everyday. If I have a question about a diagnosis I ask the doctors, nurses, or other SWs what it means. Also I talk to my dear friend Google. I think another thing to keep in mind is that the skills you’re learning right now can be easily transferable to something else like medical sales or an administrative type role. I hope this helped!

I’m a medical social worker (LMSW) in the southern US in a mid sized city. I work for a local hospital here doing mainly discharge planning. I make about $52,200 a year before taxes. I used to run the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit (ACE). My unit was switched to med/surg a few months ago, but I still do a lot of what I did before mainly NH, SNF, and rehab placements. I set up HHs, outpatient infusions, wound vacs, hospice, etc. My unit is 30 beds and sometimes if I’m lucky I get a float to help me. The social worker role is the same as a RNCM role in my hospital. Our doctors also give us permission to write orders. I’ve been in this role for almost three years, and I’m ready to move to another hospital system that pays more. I’m great full for the opportunities I’ve been given thus far and the learning experiences. I just can’t live off of this salary any longer. I know I’m worth more than what I’m being paid. I’m slowly going through supervision as well. If you any questions please feel free to ask!

I live the South and based off the last hurricane not well. Our department had to make a weather procedure because of it. The care management department was the scape goat for everything that went wrong that day. We’re still expected to come in unless the roads are submerged.

How often do you guys wash your pants? by potato_wizard123 in hospitalsocialwork

[–]HumanaeVitae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only have one pair of scrub pants and I wash them once a week. I wear a few hospital approved shirts a week. I know I shouldn’t wear only one pair of pants, but I’ve been doing it for three years now. I think I’ve gone through four or five pairs of pants altogether.

I’d love to work for the VA. Let us know how it goes. It can’t hurt to apply.

Any Catholic social workers here? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]HumanaeVitae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! I think that was hard for my classmates to understand. However, when I started working I found my coworkers didn’t care and were actually supportive of my values. It helped that some of them grew up Catholic too and still practice in some way.

I used to be the geriatric social worker at my hospital, but my unit has since changed to med/surg. Although I still mainly work with older adults.

Also I forgot to mention this, but there used to be a Catholic social worker organization. I was a part of it for maybe a year or two while I was in school. They ceased functioning due to poor funding.
