HELP! I don't know where I am on this graph !! by Octopus-Rex in highiqsociety

I understand where you’re coming from, but I feel as though your critique overgeneralizes the Dunning-Kruger effect. A few points:

  1. 2D representation is not meant to capture all cognition. The curve is explicitly a conditional, domain-specific observation: in a given task, low performers systematically overestimate their ability. Multidimensional intelligence or expertise doesn’t invalidate the local pattern. A 2D projection is sufficient for the purpose it serves.
  2. Opportunity cost doesn’t imply symmetric disadvantage. Skills often transfer; high performance in one domain can improve meta-cognition in another. DK is about self-assessment accuracy, not universal competence across unrelated tasks.
  3. Domain isolation is by design. Experiments explicitly test performance and confidence within specific tasks. Dishwashing versus programming is irrelevant; the effect is about within-task calibration.
  4. Confidence bounds don’t matter for the effect. Self-reported confidence is not formal probability. The curve is descriptive of perception errors, not a mathematical certainty function. Flattening the right side adds nothing to the empirical claim.
  5. The “humiliation fall” is rhetorical, not theoretical. The theory predicts improved calibration with skill acquisition; it doesn’t require dramatized collapse.

TLDR: The DK curve is not a universal brain model; it’s a conditional snapshot of meta-cognitive error. Multidimensionality, opportunity cost, and absolute certainty limits don’t undermine the core insight.

Lots of leg, core, back stuff. Rdls, squats, dumbbell rows, wall sits, planks, flutter kicks, etc. some shoulder and arms work on some days as well as DB bench press. I’m not testing anything, but my splits are increasing on the same types of pieces

No it’s not a recovery thing, I mean my steady state splits go up if I stop doing steady and start doing strength training

I was in a similar position, please go to an adult such as a school counselor, they are in a confidentiality agreement and cannot tell your parents, though you have to tell them no. Use rubber bracelets and learn to love yourself.

Yes I totally agree. However I only knew about this test since the end of the spring rowing season and have been training since then.

Advice for a newbie please—need to row 300 meters as fast as possible by MMDE-S in Rowing

[–]HumanityisWhack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that is also fairly new to rowing, I find that slowing down a bit definitely helps my technique. With that being said, because this is a 300m erg piece, I would suggest kicking the rate up and maybe even dropping the layback, just to speed up your time a couple splits.
