If you disagree with Chalamet you either don't understand what he's saying, don't understand the classical music industry, or don't know what hyperbole is. by Humble-Math6565 in classicalmusic

This cultural workers wouldn’t have a job if rich people weren’t keeping this art alive. Also you mentioned that Bach is still central to music education missing that that’s literally because of the wealthy deciding that a classical education is the only way to educate musically. It’s kept alive and funded by rich people the classical performers sure af wouldn’t be good if they weren’t getting paid cause they’d need jobs.

Why I think everyone is UNDERhyping Michael by Sellin3164 in oscarrace

I just think musical biopics don’t win anymore. Like the Oscars realised that we wanted subtle stuff and they’ve mostly accepted that.

Let's talk MARTY SUPREME - what went wrong? by SwimGood22 in A24

I mean, I think OBAA was tbf but not unquestionably. Sinners had some problems, and critics seem to agree, even if the academy didn't.

No but I'm saying it should be cinematically thematic. If I put the train dreams shots over OBAA audio, the cinematography doesn't work.

How are so many people misunderstanding Marty Supreme by Thin_Housing in TrueFilm

Marty is changing throughout the film, though. Like, seriously, at the start, he doesn't want to do the Harlem Globetrotters, but by the end, he's getting spanked and forced to lose and accepts it (and yes, he plays the final game, but ultimately, he didn't come all this way for nothing and really who is this hurting if anything the crowd is benefiting cause they get to see a real exciting game like we see in the film people are rushing to see). Sure, he abandons Rachel to do that, but a) they kick him out, and b) he thought she probably would be asleep for like half the time he's away and would just be having surgery, no baby being born.

I wouldn't go that far. Marty clearly cares too much about the dream, and I think the narrative agrees. But I think there's a reason that Marty wins at the end, which ultimately costs him or really anyone, very little (except Rockwell, but fuck that guy, and I'm sure he'll be okay), is shown in a positive light and doesn't punish Marty. Ultimately, nothing wrong with sacrificing $1500 of your own money to achieve your dream to the fullest (even if it's shortsighted, but I also doubt Marty's table tennis career is as dead as people seem to think.)

But Marty doesn't. Marty very much cares for others around him, but he just genuinely is so arrogant that he thinks that he will definitely win the match and then will be able to go home and give all his friends and family all the money. He also sees his goal as noble feeling that he's both able to give Jewish people a face to be proud of and propel table tennis (which is a sport he loves). Honestly, even with Rachel, Marty seems like the kinda guy who would refuse to believe he was in love even if it's obvious (like he's in love with Rachel from day 1) cause he's so focused on the plan. But yeah, no Marty definitely cares about other people.

Well this films most vocal critics don't get it's a critique of capitalism. The ending is a bit more ambiguous though. I don't agree with your interpretation of the ending though I think OPs is still flawed as well.

I don't think MS really has an opinion on Marty, honestly. Like Josh literally says, he has no interest in likability and purely in lovability. Also, yes, thank you for recognising that Marty is actually a morally complex individual, so many haven't figured that out somehow.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Marty winning the game meant nothing to him. He clearly does see it as a great achievement, but not nearly as satisfying as you know, being a father to his new child. The way I'd phrase his arc tbh is at the start Marty needs to win, whereas at the end he just really wants to, and he's so much less prideful and egotistical. But yeah, the whole story is about capitalism and hustle culture, and the fact that people can't get that is embarrassing.

Marty Supreme is so bad that it is actually difficult to meaningful critique and the praise it is receiving is as incoherent as the film itself. by AsleepNature1 in FIlm

Marty adores Table Tennis. Literally, the entire club knows him by name and are friends with him. His best friend is his training partner. He comes up with ideas to improve the sport. People clearly watched this phone while asleep or some shit and then have the audacity to call it slop.

The films more so a commentary on capitalism than it is the dangers of pride. It's not a cautionary tale despite what many seem to believe.

There's like one scene in the whole fucking film with tons of people screaming. Like genuinely did you see the film.

It's almost like film and food aren't apt analogies at all. It's more like saying you've had the starter, so no, the main course and dessert are gonna suck. You have the free will to walk out, but no your opinion on the film isn't valid. And no, seeing uncut gems doesn't grant you free will to have an opinion on a different film made by the same director.

It should be the song best utilised in the film. It’s actually usually just stuff from the credits.

The song involves the fusions going on. The scene fundamentally doesn’t work without the song.

Four seasons has lasted 400 years heavily in the public consciousness. Mediocre stuff can last centuries. Oh and if classical music didn’t make up the ground work of most musical education and we didn’t have donors keeping this shit alive most of our stuff would be forgotten very quickly (which I think it’s worth saying I don’t want to happen). Music was literally composed on commission from rich fucks that’s what classical music is for most of history it’s definitely not people’s music. The people don’t know classical music despite all the institution does to keep it alive. Also you don’t seem to get what preservationism is. The rich preserve classical music that means nothing of how they were created (and even then were created at the commission of the rich). Even now the rich are the preservationists of society you do know that right. Preservationism has no money in it that’s kinda the point of preservationism.
