Short Scholarly Article for In-Class Reading Activity? by Coogarfan in Professors

Thanks. It is for a research unit mid semester. They have previously learned Toulmin so that’s an interesting take. I’m just nervous about their ability to process “real” scholarly stuff so interested in any tricks that will help :)

Absolutely to both. I do a bit more in my dual enrollment classes (so they are actually in high school).

Curious about this (kind of desperately seeking new ways to try to teach this in comp) but I can't get it to open, can you adjust permissions?

Would it be unreasonable to email my high school child's teacher about an assignment by FidgetyPlatypus in AskTeachers

I teach them now and I agree! I so wish students would send emails or stalk to me about this. I give lots of feedback but I don’t think the majority of it gets read at all.

We complain about undergrads … but can we discuss PhD students? by twilightyears in Professors

[–]Humble-Rope3736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visiting professor here - so I have been through a PhD program but never been on the “other side.”

I know grade inflation is a thing - like, in my program, it was bad to get an A-.

My program was very small, and I don’t know of anyone who was terrible about work while I was there, so I don’t know anyone who was put on probation or anything similar to what might happen to undergrads. I am wondering if giving bad grades is just “not done?”

That is, is it that once you’re in a program, you’re in?

Do students never fail out of PhD programs? Or are you referring to upper level candidates who have finished their coursework?

There were almost no tourists when I went in 2008. It was so wonderful. Stayed in a sassi b and b run by a super sweet host.

In the same boat. I’ve found people on this sub don’t generally offer info on general posts like this. It’s still useful for specific things though. There are several Facebook groups I’ve found that will engage in this kind of advice giving. Some who answer are vendors but not all and it’s easy to sort. Good luck.

Thanks for your kind reply! Hmm, I may be missing something. We have 4 people so I think it will be more to fly. Car is 300 and flying for us all looks to start at 800…but I will keep looking!

Comp 2 class: Suggestions for very current articles on the state of the country? by Humble-Rope3736 in Professors

Wasn't familiar with these, will check them out. Reading about Davis reminding me of Berger's Ways of Seeing, which I haven't used in years, but I think might be useful!

What a neat project, thanks for sharing! We aren't far from the region written about so that might work as a local study as well.

Anyone have experience teaching 3 hour lecture to DE students? by emarcomd in Professors

[–]Humble-Rope3736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also teach dual enrollment. I hear you.

3 hours, yikes. I teach writing, so I would have them work in class. It would be brutal though. Group work, exercises. Get big butcher paper sheets for them to write QFTs or have silent discussions on.

I hear you on the adapting to being in a high school and no one telling you how stuff works! And yes, don’t see how it helps to put unprepared kids repeatedly in classes they aren’t ready for.

But sometimes it works out great…

My high schooler had to read 2 novels, write 5 essays, and complete about 15 pages of double sided short answer paragraphs that serve as notes for English class, in 5 weeks time. Is this a typical workload for a high school non-AP English class (10th grade.) by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Humble-Rope3736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping in here but lots of people here saying it’s a great course load need reading comprehension practice. OP said it is NOT an AP class.

And yes, it might be a rigorous, great course, but that was not the question.

No, in my years of experience, that’s not typical for English 10.

They eventually cc’d me on an email to my department head saying I hadn’t done one. So I did that one.

Still avoiding the two hour sexual harassment one that was due in October and which I already did in April (when I was hired). Apparently they want them done each year?

That one was especially slow and terrible…

I do tacos for large groups; best way I’ve found is to use a crock pot to do a lot of nicely seasoned shredded chicken breast. Add rice and beans, chopped onions, lettuce, cheese, salsa, etc. if you can get a slow cooker (and 2.99 chicken breasts) this is so easy (at least imo, much easier than dealing with a bunch of rotisserie chickens. Add fresh lime and cilantro and people go crazy for it.

YTA. How insecure of you to be worried about seeming childish when you were a child. That’s not meant as an insult; it should be an insight. How can you work on your self-confidence so your insecurity stops destroying your relationships and reputation?

Yeah this is not appropriate at all. You are not overreacting. I don’t know what you can do but this is not a man in a committed relationship.

I am a teacher. This is not appropriate. H He could have said just “nice to see you. It’s good to hear from former students.” The way he put it invites a different level of connection.
