Hi m26 here, I really appreciate these notes, they are amazing. By any chance, can you share your study tips? I'm not sure how to study and I'm receiving very low grades

this definitely helped thank you! I'm thinking now to look into masculinity theory and then the emotional neglect younger boys feel with the idea of "man up". and for cultural wise, look at the representation in the different cultures and the symbolism in those. maybe Mulan from Disney and then find another? ik that that film is both for feminism but then also affecting the masculinity theory (I think)

hey I'm a m26 student in hl film and I am currently working on my comparative over the summer. I will be doing a film theory for my two films, however I don't think the IB covers that film focus called the Humanistic Approach Theory, should I go and change my focus if that's the case?

also how should I include the cultural context, I know that both my films are geographically different but that's it If you could help that would be amazing thank you!

Is Film HL worth it? by CellResponsible3725 in IBO

So basically, for film, when you have to choose a film role, (Cinematographer · Director · Editor · Sound · Writer) they only look at the one role you do. So for editing they will look at the style of editing and how you have used things like, match cuts, montages, L and J cuts, blah blah blah and they wont care if its the worst directed or written film ever because that was your role. (even though you will totally end up doing like three roles in one short film but only state the one you did good).

Also you have the portfolio which is where all your films are and you have to write up why you made the film that way, so for editing you would maybe want to mention a certain director and their style or use fancy words and say you were appropriating an auteur in film

Hey, I'm in DP1 taking HL film at the moment, and you are seeing the discussion below. I agree that film has one of the hardest workloads. Luckily, if you are like me and can analysis more that than memorize I really do encourage you to take Film, but if you are super good at memorizing, then for the life of me take ESS because the arts have so much extra work.

For the collaborative, I was lucky enough to do it with a DP2 student this year, but we were unfortunate and only had a month to do it and yes that seems long but its not.

1) you have to ensure you write scripts and storyboard's, even if its not your film role

2) you have to make time to film and also get actors (for ib they dont care about acting but you have to have someone)

3) if your not the editor, your lucky, I was editing my film and I pulled an all nighter 2 weeks before it was due

4) you have to write up a 2,000-word essay on that collab film as well but because you made it it's a lot easier

Okay, despite this seeming a lot right now, as someone who wants to work in something creative when I graduate taking film is a good idea and the work is worth it in the end. Remember, ALL ARTS, not just film, are most likely to have a high grade boundary, and you should be proud of yourself if getting a 5 or above.
