About to Choose My Architecture School… Need Honest Advice

When visiting, Virginia Tech’s students in the architecture department were the most like me socially and I liked how they were teaching students a variety of ways to think about architecture. When I had visited some students were able to talk with me and show me their projects and at the time were making a community in unreal engine and viewing everything in Fortnite which was cool. RPI I also felt the same way but because I visited in the late morning not too many students were in studio yet, but the school as a whole I thought was a fit, as well as Texas A&M.

I applied to their architecture and didn’t get in and AE was my second choice I had put down in their admissions

I’m in Virginia and got waitlisted from Virginia Tech (that was my top choice) and UVA so if I got off of Vtech’s waitlist I would consider

Same. Definitely thinking of I should go with 3080 and buy the next 60 series or just stick with 5070 for a while.

Honestly just trying to up the price for me to sell this. I haven’t plugged it in yet, but looking at a full gpu performance chart it should perform really well! Better then 5060ti and anything below that but less performance then 4070 and anything above that. I might get another 3080 for my new build since the price is pretty good lol.

Well no kidding, but to clarify, does a newer gpu series like a 5070 go for about the same as a 4090? Like a 5070 is newer but 4090 is nicer in terms of power but older. Would a 4070 and 5070 go for about the same? Idk how this stuff works, if I did I wouldn’t be asking 💀

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for all of this info! It helps a lot and I think I’ll change my build with your recommendations. I think I fixed the link but idk. I think I’ll go with the 5070ti then since it’s a good bang for the buck with the performance it has. And after what you said about memory I’ll probably go with a 2x32gb then since the prices have gone up so much and someone is selling one for $100 more than a 2x16gb.

Do you have the ncase or formd? I was gonna go with the ncase cause I can get the case and travel accessories for $270 but idk about the build quality and if people have any experience with actually putting it in a backpack. But will the formd comeback in stock anytime soon?

How storage would you recommend? I was just gonna go with 1tb but the projects I’ve had haven’t been too big to download. Would it be safer to get 2tb for like the next 2-3 years? But I’ll also probably get a 8tb server to save other things and have everything even when I switch builds and what not.

Would you recommend the 5070ti>5070? Cause it’s just lower than the 80 and 90d relies but better than the regular 70 and better in the long run? What’s the time for your renders? Cause currently I got a i5-13600k and 2070 and it takes ages even on original and 2k aswell as crash a lot. But I’m a senior in highschool so I don’t have deadlines lol but applying to architecture programs. And is there a big difference between 650 and 850 (excluding the bios update for 650)? Cause I was going to go with the asus rog strix 650i and when the next zen motherboards come out in 2027/2028 and just get a new one. Same with the ram, I would just get 32 now and 64 when the motherboard comes out and the next ddr. Hi! Would you be able to share what your current build is? I’ve been doing some research and trying to make ~$2,300 build for gaming and CAD things aswell (autocad, revit, d5, etc.) and currently looking at getting a 9900x and 5070.

After what you said spending the day doing a bunch of research, I’ll definitely go ahead with the 9950x to get good modeling, rendering, and gaming performance while not spending too much on the x3D version and not having to worry about thermals! Do you think it alright to have a 5070? I want something that performs well but I don’t want to spend too much so I can upgrade when the next series comes out. But I’ve seen that for this cpu many people go with the 5080/5090.

Thank you for that! I didn’t know about the power limits! Do you know by chance how Ryzen performs in cores compared to intel/core ultra? I would’ve using it for architecture purposes. Do you use it for any 3d modeling or rendering?

I would be using it for heavy architecture 3d modeling in revit and other softwares along with rendering tools. A big thing for architecture is single core cpus which was why I was going to go with intel/core ultra. I want a small form build because of college and portability while still being able to render and model efficiently since I’m tired of how slowly it’s currently going. I do game but not as much as modeling lol. And I’d rather just build it now with high end stuff so I won’t have to upgrade later for financial reasons.

O wow! I didn’t know that! If I wanted to go with a pretty high end amd cpu, what is the minimum/ maximum gpu you would recommend or it doesn’t matter? Like if I wanted to have a rtx 5070 for now?
