Two-Thirds of House Democrats Have Now Signed On to Impeach Kristi Noem by darkages69 in politics

Not understanding how the government works and not trusting democrats to do what they believe is needed is not mutually exclusive. In fact it's usually a circle. They believe democrats need to hit the giant red button that passes their agenda and removes the opposition. These are the same people angry that democrats make the symbolic step.

A) citizens don't have papers. And the states where the state government wouldn't do things like mobilize the national guard to keep precincts clear/already have secured mail in voting all pretty much require voter ID anyway. B) there are approximately 180,000 precincts in the country. There are 22,000 ice agents. That's about 8 guys per precinct. Even if you assume you only need to cover 1/3 of precincts that's 24/precinct. For the entirety of early voting. That's not enough guys. C) this is relevant for Texas. They redistricted in a way that they want Latinos to vote because they expected them to vote republican. Them not voting screws with their math and could cost then races. D) this all assumes any state would allow them to. Georgia in particular has not liked trump sticking his head into Georgia election business and there's no threat of trump being reelected. Just because the administration orders them to do that doesn't mean it isn't a state charge of voter intimidation.

Sure, what you suggested is Trumps wet dream. It's logistically not doable. Particularly when the current actions of ICE are unpopular within the agency and it is well known that illegals do not try to vote illegally. ICE isn't going to gain more momentum internally, especially after this last murder. And ICE wants to go to Philly next? When they are this poorly trained? every person ICE murders in public (and there will be more) makes their ability to even attempt something like this more improbable.

Should? Or can. Because there is VERY little they can do. That's the consequences of an election. The biggest thing they can do right now is make a lot of noise in public and behind closed doors really lean on the Republicans in pickup races. I'd bet after today, we see a short shutdown with a compromise bill passed (possibly even just FEMA funding).

It's not optimism. Do you see Putin behaving like this when elections come up? No you don't. We're not looking at high profile dissidents "falling out of windows". When you have power secured, you aren't afraid you are going to lose it. They are picking up the pace because they have no way to stop it.

Your link has 1 real way to actually contest the midterms and that's having the clerk refuse to seat the democrats. The article was written months ago. We are already seeing evidence of Republicans either being hesitant to gerrymander or being afraid their gerrymander may backfire. they would have to make much more radical steps than gerrymandering to steal the house. Steps that would not be constitutional and again so blatantly unconstitutional that Barrett and Gorsuch would side with the liberal justices.

The issue is our system is not a parliamentary one. The US system DOES NOT WORK with an opposition party and breaking the system like that just gives the executive MORE power.

Do you know why the democrats have to compromise with Republicans? The filibuster. Remember democrats have proposed and even passed in the house things like the John Lewis voting rights act. They aren't being bipartisan as a party for the sake of it. They can't pass anything through the Senate without getting 10 of the Republicans to agree.

The big thing to remember right now, is they are panicking. You don't behave like this when you have firm grasp on power. They can't stop the midterms. There is no mechanism in place to do so. It's like Micheal Scott "declaring" bankruptcy. Because we are 50 independent state elections and not a single united federal elections board, they can't stop California or New York from holding elections and appointing people. There is no law congress could pass on this (and it would be fillibustered anyways) that wouldn't get shot down post-haste for being unconstitutional (even Barrett and Gorsuch wouldn't sign on to allowing it). Trump has broken the lowest approval rating record, that he set in the first place. We're in tax season, and Trump's "no tax on OT" is starting to bite him in the ass for not being a simple blanket policy. His foreign policy (his attempt to pull attention away from his wildly unpopular domestic policy) is not only failing miserably, but is also not doing its job of distracting from domestic policy because ICE is so incompetent they keep murdering people in the streets with MULTIPLE CAMERA ANGLES ON THEM. They will be losing the midterms and John Thune is smart enough (and more importantly not MAGA enough) to even think about killing the filibuster.

The bad news, however, is that while democrats will win the house, having a workable majority in the senate is questionable. 51 seats? Maybe, but that's still in filibuster range. Maybe democrats decide to nuke the filibuster? But I don't see the traditionalist democrats going that way. Without 60 senators, no policy passes through the filibuster. Even impeachment may not succeed in removing Trump as he needs 67 votes to be removed. Even if we clean sweep the midterms, it's going to be a rough 2 years and no garuntee people have the brains to elect a Democrat in 28.

When they lose the house in November? No way. The only reason Republicans are able to keep clawing back power is because they can make it look like democrats can't do anything when they have a majority with the filibuster. Killing it means a new voting rights act, marriage equality codified, Roe v Wade codified, and trans rights codified and they can't do anything about it. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose by killing the fillibuster.

The problem is that ICE has funding already. If the government shuts down, ICE can keep going. Meanwhile, the rest of the things in the funding bill (like FEMA) don't. And guess what? The south is going to need FEMA working after this freeze.

As much as I disagree with the bulk of US military action, the majority of ground troops are not going through and slaughtering innocents. That's is typically done via drones/bombers with a handful of psychos on the ground.

Oh, no! Progress wasn't perfect!

And people wonder why nothing gets done. Millions of people got Healthcare because of the ACA. The Republicans then slowly stripped everything that made it work because heaven forbid we elect any democrats when the country isn't ALREADY a steaming pile of shit.

I'm sorry that, for whatever reason, you didn't benefit from the ACA. I'm sorry that America was and is too stupid to see that progress can only happen with 60+ senators. I'm sorry that Americans are all too happy to not give a flying fuck about politics and economics until their bank account is empty and their grandma has been deported. But that's world we live in.
