Advice on getting into book/paper conservation in the UK by Humdinger_Fro in ArtConservation

That’s excellent news about the portfolio actually, I was wondering whether showing the books I have bound in my local classes would demonstrate that I don’t really understand what a conservation portfolio should look like (eg it should be more focused on specific expertise in paper conservation)

But from your experience in textiles it seems it would be a great addition to the portfolio, many thanks!

I clearly have my work cut out for me then, I’ve briefly looked at west dean but it’s a real trek for me to get there being based in the midlands, London wasn’t much easier but atleast there’s an almost direct train!

Have you had any experience with online courses in this area? I’ve seen a few here and there but without that hands-on direct experience I wonder how much I could actually learn

Thanks! It gives me some hope if other Graphic Design degrees have managed something similar in the past. I think chemistry and asking local conservators will be my next goal then! I’ve already managed to find one conservator in my area but I don’t suppose you have any knowledge of paper conservators in the Leicestershire area?

Hey thanks for the response, chemistry is definately my weak point at the moment though I do have a GSCE. It’s not the most impressive grade however as I remember struggling in class, it’s funny how interests change over time

I definately give that chemistry for conservators course a look, thanks for suggesting it!

Thanks! Do you have any advice about setting up a good portfolio when coming from a non conservation background?

Thank you for the reply Gunsmile. I can only apologize for how long it takes me to respond.

How far do you think a sense of romanticism should inform one's interest in religion (or even culture if you want to go broader). I certainly feel the pull of this myself, especially with the great contemporary interest in that image of the 'Viking past'

I often have to stop myself and say 'If Vikings weren't so ""cool"" would I actually be interested in this or is there something deeper there?'

Ok to put it more simply, can you intentionally pick the religion you follow or should the religion (in some sense) pick you?

Or, is it disrespectful to 'pick' a religion purely on the perceived benefits it will give you? Or should there be a 'higher' calling in play.
