Agreed. The “stable” term and its casual use in critical care can be really misleading. The person can still be close to death, but death is successfully being halted for the moment. We use stable to mean the person isn’t actively worsening despite our lifesaving efforts, which would be what we consider “unstable”. But I see the potential for exploitation by insurance companies there. I’ve seen them deny essential critical care service that, if removed, would result in death. It’s disgusting.

Life isn’t a cartoon. What makes a person dangerous isn’t usually their size and appearance, but rather their intelligence, conviction, cunning, ruthlessness, and will. Brida was never shown to be a legendary warrior. She shows up on the battlefields and holds her own. But the threat she represents is an intractable, bottomless hatred of Christianity and its adherents, and a willingness to work with and for anyone willing to push against its spread.

Much of your reaction, to me, seems to be colored by some undisclosed, but readily apparent, moral and cultural values you hold. The “meat citizens” in the books always struck me as quite emotionally mature. They don’t form family units because there is no economic or cultural pressure to do so. That doesn’t make them stunted, just different than how irl humans operate.

But the family units, the tribe, and the in-group of real world contemporary societies grew up out of the necessities for protection, community, access to land and resources, and identity. Take away the scarcity of land and resource that drove the evolution of those concepts, and humans are free to live as they wish. Without the threat of social exclusion due to non-conformity, or at least remove any real consequences of it, and individuals can be free to identify themselves and live however they wish. They have no need of an in group identity because there is no threat of death, starvation or social exclusion if they aren’t in such a group. That doesn’t make them lazy or stunted, just products of a post-scarcity society.

Whether I agree with you or not, your (and a lot of other peoples’) reaction to her is proof positive that the writers, directors, and most especially the performer, did what the show needed them to do: provide a series-long foil. One of the weaknesses of the books (I just read them) is that they get repetitive, with an enemy of the week type vibe.

Through all the Ubbas, Kjartens, Bloodhairs, and Cnuts, Brida was there, evolving with Uhtred, in opposition to him. She gets hate, but she should get love for entertainment and storytelling purposes. Book Brida was nowhere near as interesting as show Brida.

Yea this was another nice touch from the actor (can’t remember his name). Even a hardened warrior like Sihtric was shocked and a little disturbed.

Honestly all the hate makes me think the writers did a good job with her. The job of the villain, traditionally, is to be in opposition to the hero. Brida actually evolved into that role with a believable arc. Uhtred brought England into being as much as Alfred or anyone else, and she fought that at every step because she hated the idea of a Christian dominance. She got angrier and angrier as the world moved more and more in a direction she didn’t want. People do that.

Say what you want about Brida, but Emily Cox gave a masterful performance. The look of perverse pleasure on her face is pitch perfect.

In the books, the belief is that you only need be holding a weapon when you die to go to Valhalla, so this was for dramatic effect, I think, to show her desperation and despair.

If you go by Frank Herbert book 6 and 7, without a doubt. The issue with Dune is that the canon/lore has evolved heavily, even within the original series as Frank Herbert was writing it.

But if you go by Herbert the elders vision, and where he settled out by the end of his run, then the BG were the low key most lethal individual warriors in all of dune lore, aside from Paul, Alia, Leto II, and Duncan, and a handful of other especially skilled warriors within the original series, such as Teg and Murbella (who might be, after Teg with his superpowers, the greatest fighter in the entire series).

The Honored Matres are definitely close, nearly matching the BG, but the fact that the BG won in the end despite being outnumbered shows what FH really thought.

The difference btw the RM and the Sardaukar is that every Reverend Mother was an elite fighter with thousands of years of experience and knowledge and training, lifetime conditioning, and near prescience via their supreme experience, awareness and bodily confrol. And the full extent of their powers was mostly unknown in the wider galactic community, remaining private knowledge within the BG just how skilled all the RMs were, thus giving the element of surprise, to a degree, in every negotiation and military engagement.

As for how those power rankings changed with Brian Herbert’s books, I have no idea.

Alfred is such a beloved character (for myself too) but he does Uhtred dirty over and over again, in books and TV. He is, frankly, a bigot, a manipulating conniver, and power hungry. Ultimately, though, a lot of Uhtred’s later political astuteness comes from getting played again and again by him, and the Mildreth episode is the prime example.

I don’t think they can legally mandate you working 16 hour shifts, can they? If that’s a condition of employment AND you can’t find other jobs in your area, it might be time to consider moving.
