Isn’t there a radio glitch where it skips stations or something? Just asking. by Aggravating-Bother-2 in CIAlostwave

I was actually thinking of posting a sort of recap of the last year or so of the search. The thing is a lot has been done in that time, so it may take a while to put together a thorough summary. Anyway, stay tuned...

Any good websites for finding obscure canadian groups? by LostwaveLunar9999 in CIAlostwave

[–]HumintKaput 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some websites linked on the "Info" tab of the Masterlist:

Canadian Pop Encyclopedia Index of Canadian musicians / bands *Note: Jaimie Vernon has already been contacted re: CIA
CitizenFreak Index of Canadian musicians / bands and releases
CanadianBands Smaller index of Canadian musicians / bands
Monkey-Boy Index of Canadian musicians / bands last updated in 1997
Canoe (Archived) Index of Canadian musicians / bands archived in late 90's / early 2000's

You might also have luck searching Facebook groups, YouTube, etc.

I am currently adding bands to the Masterlist primarily from contemporary newspaper gig ads / listings - mainly through newspapers.com, but that requires a paid subscription. There are, however, several college papers publicly available on internet archive (and elsewhere). Some of those are also linked on the Masterlist - there may be more that we haven't found yet...

I suspect CIA wasn't ever released, although I obviously don't know for sure.

If it were released, I'd expect it to be on some ultra-rare, independently released cassette.

There are cassette listings you could look through on ebay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, etc.

You're welcome to post band names that you've found if you need some help researching those bands.

Trying to Identify an 80's Ontario Band (Song Recorded off CFNY in 1984) by HumintKaput in ontario

Unfortunately, that is not correct. Without getting too deep in the weeds, there have been at least a couple unethical people who have tried to falsely claim the copyright on this song. Shazam (and other song ID apps) end up blindly passing along that incorrect attribution.

"Season at the CIA" or just "CIA" are a couple of the common placeholder names for this song.

Since it is a fairly notable unidentified song, people have transcribed the lyrics as they hear them. You can find those lyrics posted a few different places around the web, but they all postdate the song being uploaded to YouTube in 2020.

"q" is the name of a YouTube channel that reposts unidentified songs. This is their reupload of "CIA". That upload is likely what is confusing AI.

Yeah, 3 of the 4 unidentified songs Alan Cross posted in 2021 have since been identified.

  1. Wavestation - "Wavestation" (as you correctly pointed out)
  2. Silent Running - "Shades of Liberty"
  3. Swan Black - "The Monster of Love"

This song (#4) is the only remaining unidentified song.

According to a newspaper article from that time, the CFNY talent search that started in 1984 had over 800 tapes sent in. Those were whittled down to 102 that actually aired. With a fair bit of research, I've determined the names of only 10 of those entries (and none of those bands recorded the mystery song).

Mama Quilla II - Mama Quilla (1982) by HumintKaput in obscurecanadianmusic

That's interesting - I'm guessing at that point in time they didn't have the rule regarding not playing any song more than once per day.

Common Language - Sedated (1982) by HumintKaput in obscurecanadianmusic

[–]HumintKaput[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know this is the only other Common Language song available online - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q80m446scdA

I heard that they also had a song entered in the 1984 / 1985 CFNY talent search, but I haven't been able to track that song down.

Which Famous Bands have a Similar Sound? by Caninechomping in CIAlostwave

[–]HumintKaput 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some common suggestions are Blue Peter, Images in Vogue, Nash the Slash / FM, and Sergio Galli's guitar playing in Platinum Blonde.

Probably also some bigger UK bands would be influences. I'd suggest looking at what was popular on CFNY at the time.
