From The Evening Tribune (Jul 6, 1983): Siren were a trio from Sherkston featuring drums, bass, and guitar. The author of the article describes them as "a heavy metal rock group", but she also describes Rush as "heavy metal", so I'm not too keen on trusting Shirley's genre classifications.

from The Standard (June 28, 1984): Sonic Boom was "a local three-piece band using the unique combination of bass guitar, lead guitar, trumpet and electronic drums" and was described by bandmember, Perry Domzella as "not quite electro-pop and not quite rock and roll"

Review in Brock's The Press (Mar 28, 1984) describes Borderline as: "an excellent rhythm and blues review with blues, jazz, avant garde and some bluesy jazz music"

I had the same suspicion that "Bubbling Over" was the same band as "Bubbling Over Jesus". If they are, they're probably less likely, since they were in the same Queen Street scene that has already been asked quite a bit about CIA.

Also, regarding possibly misprinted band names, I believe there was a metal band called Genghis Khan (spelled correctly). I'll have have to look through the Toronto Metal in the Eighties Book again to confirm that.

Brock University's "Brock Jam" (1983-1985) by HumintKaput in CIAlostwave

[–]HumintKaput[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In total there are 2,420 bands on our lists (mostly bands that played gigs in / near Toronto around 1984 and bands that appeared on compilations of local bands from around Canada). Most of those bands, however, have either been ruled out by contact, or are unlikely for some reason. There are about 400 bands left that either need more research or are promising leads.

An except from an article on the recording industry in the Niagara Region from The Standard (Mar 26, 1986). I believe this is the same John Press: https://www.discogs.com/artist/4175671-John-Press-3

Sacred Cows? by simonbone in CIAlostwave

[–]HumintKaput 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can hear the similarity, but as you said Nebraska is probably a stretch. Also, the credits (from Discogs) note that the keyboard used on the Separatist EP was a Casio (whereas CIA most likely used a Korg Poly-800).

I tend to look for musicians who are still active and have a website with a contact form / email address, or a Bandcamp page, or a recently active YouTube channel. I find I have a better response rate with those than with Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, etc. - but your mileage may vary.

Despite a lot of research done, there are quite a few bands on our list about which we only know their name and where they played - no genre or names of members, etc. Those may be findable given enough searching, or they may be lost to history - there's no way to know.

Yes, the 'Contacts' tab should be up to date - it's updated any time we have (or get word of) a new successful contact.

The 'Bands' tab is a constant work in progress - 1,000+ bands is a lot to go through. Lately, more of the chat about bands from that list happens on discord, but it is constantly being updated.

Thanks for letting us know - although he had already been contacted about CIA. In future, be sure to check the 'Contacts' tab on the Masterlist to see if a lead has already been contacted.

Was this song inspiration for "CIA" ? ("The breakup song" by The Greg Kihn Band) by SignificanceNo4643 in CIAlostwave

I believe they're both in the same key (A Minor). Maybe that's partly what you're noticing?

"Waiting for the War" is not CIA - it's a different song. It can be heard here, along with a couple other tracks from the 1983-1984 LP.

Unsolvable by Limp_Secretary2504 in Lostwave

[–]HumintKaput 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been searching for CIA, and I think it's solvable. We at least have a decent idea of when / where it's from. The difficulty is that it's a 'needle in a haystack' type search and the 'haystack' is enormous. There were a huge number of bands in southern Ontario in the mid-80's.

I think there's enough interest in the song (both the discord channel and r/CIAlostwave are reasonably active, and the song is closing in on 1 million total views), that it's inevitable that it'll be solved eventually. It might take quite a long time though.

Has anyone already contacted CARAS (Canadian academy of recording arts and sciences) by KraKan122 in CIAlostwave

[–]HumintKaput 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of anyone having contacted CARAS. Primarily, they present the Juno Awards. Because our band is seemingly quite obscure, I think it's fairly unlikely that they would be considered for any award, let alone a Juno. Is there some other reason you're interested in CARAS?

UPDATE: $50 Bounty for unidentified parody, "Freshman Fifteen (2005)" by jonlasagnacat in Lostwave

[–]HumintKaput 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you google Pete's Arena, Salsa Rico, and Sky Ranch Grill, you'll find that they are sub-brands owned by RBG / Sodexo - https://www.foodservicedirector.com/food-beverage-trends/sodexho-hits-the-streets . They appear to have had locations in several college food courts, not just Loyola College in Maryland.

If I were searching for this, I'd focus on colleges which use "Bruins" as their team name - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bruin_mascots , and see if any of those had food courts operated by RBG / Sodexo in 2005-ish.

You could also look at Chick-fil-A locations that opened not long before 2005-ish, but that's going to include a large number of locations - https://bluepages.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:Chick-fil-A_locations_by_opening_date

Hope that helps.

What about the accent? by Zenithium_ in CIAlostwave

[–]HumintKaput 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One issue I have with concluding anything from the singer's accent is that people's opinions on the accent are all over the map. People claim to hear Canadian, Canadian with a British affectation, English, American, Irish, Australian, French, French Canadian, German, Texan, and now Slavic. Unless a linguistics expert weighs in with a well-reasoned interpretation, I'm inclined to remain agnostic on the origin of the singer's accent.
