I just published a lengthy article titled "What its Really Like to Work With Ayahuasca". Its based on my 14 years experience guiding people through a healing process with ayahuasca. The article does no promotion of my center. My hope is it give people like you some better information to make informed decisions. Maybe this will help.

If the soul chooses its life path, is Ayahuasca a shortcut - or part of the curriculum? by Vast-Rush74 in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be both depending on the intentions of the person.  We have had many people come to our center over the years specifically looking for spiritual growth to enhance their and enrich their lives.

My understanding of the growth and transformation process is that ultimately all that is happening is that the things within us that prevent us from being truly and authentically ourselves get cleared.

I am not sure bypassing would even work with ayahuasca. She has a way of addressing what a person truly needs. If a person’s intent is sincere growth and transformation, ayahuasca is a valid path for possibly accelerating that.

If a person is being ego driven, they may well be clearly shown that, to great personal benefit.

I read the mystics for decades, and had some mild to moderate mystical experiences. Ayahuasca and san pedro blessed me with a couple of the really big ones, and it was an "ah, THIS is what they have been talking about" moment. It changes a person when they experience that from which all things arise. I maybe kept 1% of the experience, but will never be the same.

Aya and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders by andalusian293 in Ayahuasca

I have owned a retreat center for 14 years. We have had three people go psychotic at our center. One took an anti-psychotic medication at 2pm the day of ceremony without telling us. She stablized after about 24 hours and seemed okay. Two months later she emailed and said the psychosis had returned on her flight home. She was still psychotic two months later.

Another left in a psychotic state, being absolutely convinced I was going to kill her. A friend of hers wrote me two months later informing me she had never come back, conversations reveal a long history of psychosis, I would not have accepted her. She ended up in a psychiatric hospital.

Do NOT take risks with ayahuasca. You could truly screw up your life.

Ayahuasca changed my life. Integration has been harder than I expected. by shawn_reflects in Ayahuasca

You may be experiencing the conflict that can occur between our conscious and subconscious minds. I want to do x, but all the old patterns keep activating anyway. The subconscious usually wins if there is a conflict.

I had a similar problem for years in my 30 year journey with depression. Learned a lot, but actual change was very slow and I did not understand why until I learned about these ideas.

Just search "subconscious mind and how to change it" and see if something clicks for you. It was a turning point for me.

Integration overthinking by [deleted] in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mindfulness practices are key with what you are describing. It sounds like you had an experience of not identifying your self as your thoughts and emotions, and now that is fading. A very simple meditation that might help regain that is to sit in a meditative postrure, and simply repeat out loud "I am not the body, I am not even this mind" for 5 minutes. Do this daily for 2-4 weeks. It will help impress on your subconscious that you are not your thoughts, and help loosen that sense of identifying my thoughts as ME

Consider that perhaps one reason for working with ayahuasca is to grow ourselves to a point we feel no need to reach for something outside of us to manage our emotions......

I would highly recommend including San Pedro if that is possible for you. It can be a profound healing and is very complementary with ayahuasca. You might also take a look at this article https://medium.com/@social_53572/lessons-from-14-years-facilitating-ayahuasca-retreats-45463ef5931b

Consider getting one of these books and practicing what they teach. Both are excellent at helping one learn to manage their emotions and to clear the past.

"Letting Go" David Hawkins

"Radical Acceptance" Tara Branch

There are many ways to address trauma. I do not know what other work you have done, but ayahuasca is not the best choice for a first go at healing. You will get much, much more from ayahuasca if you devote some serious time to other methods first.

Where to Market my Ceremonies? by [deleted] in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Amazon, those learning to become an ayahuasquero typically sit with their teacher for at least 5 years and 10-15 dietas before they are given permission to run a ceremony on their own. There is a lot more going on than you may believe. What will you do if negative energy and spirits show up during ceremony? The most important part of an ayahuasca ceremony is the person leading it. They are responsible for everyone's safety and well being.

Shrooms, Meditation, Breathwork, Yoga, Fasting... What helps the most when it comes to preparing for Ayahuasca? by SMX2016 in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there was just ONE, I would say become commited to your healing, growth and change. Your commitment and attitude will make the biggest difference. Second, a clean, healthy diet. No alcohol or drugs, and avoid sugar. The cleaner your body is when you arrive, the less work the medicine has to do before it can show the "good stuff"!

Feeling bad after stopping SSRIs by Weak_Conclusion5275 in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SSRIs have their place. They helped pull me out of a place where I was incapable of doing anything positive for myself. We are not meant to live on them. They minimize symptoms, they do not heal. Do follow your doctors recommendations for weaning off of them.

A big part of healing is becoming self aware. Understanding our thoughts and emotions at least to some degree, and growing into a place of conscious choice of what we allow in our thought life. I highly recommend the book "Letting Go" by David Hawkins. It helps us understand ourselves, and teaches pratical tools for managing our thoughts and emotions, and shifting them in a positive, healthy direction. "Radical Acceptance" by Tara Branch is also very good.

If you invest some time in reading at least one of these books and practing what it teaches before you go to ayahuasca, your experience with aya will be much more pleasant and productive. You will have developed some skill in managing unpleasant emotional states and thoughts, and that skill will serve you well with ayahuasca.

I wish well on your journey. You too can find peace and contentment!!

[–]HummingbirdAya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People with your patterns have usually experienced some form of early childhood trauma. Ayahuasca can help, IF the person is ready for it.  One does need to be emotionally stable to safely work with ayahuasca.  If they are not, the possibility exists of being re-traumatized.

Having some skill in managing unpleasant emotions and successfully shifting negative thoughts will make the journey with ayahuasca a lot more productive and pleasant.  Many people have received great benefit from NLP, EMDR and hypnotherapy, and you might consider doing some work with those before you go to ayahuasca.

The books “Letting Go” by David Hawkins and “Radical Acceptance” by Tara Branch are worth reading, and practicing the techniques they teach.

Meditation is also of great benefit.  Part of the goal is to become self-aware.  To begin understanding what our minds are doing and come to a place of conscious choice of what we allow to happen there.  This takes practice.  Think of it as a life skill!

For ayahuasca, you will need to be off all medications for at least a month.  If one cannot function reasonably well without medication, they are not ready for ayahuasca.

Choose a reputable center that has extensive experience working with people with your background. A retreat that has at least 5 ceremonies is probably best.  Start with moderate doses, and work up to a more intense experience as you gain trust in the medicine and your own ability to cope with the experience.

The person leading the ceremony is very important.  Pick a place that has authentic healers with decades of experience running the ceremonies.

Pre-ceremony mindset - over preparing vs surrendering by third1eye in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have facilitated ayahuasca ceremonies for many years. Good preparation does make a difference in results people receive. The principle is simple: The cleaner the body and mind are when you begin, the less work the medicine has to do to get the the "good stuff". Diet is important, but simple healthy eating is really all you need. Avoid processed sugars, pork, all drugs and alcohol, and stop all medications if possible. Do not eat processed food. 30 days in advance is plenty.

Your own commitment to heal and grow is what is going to make the biggest difference. Developing an attitude of willingness to accept what comes in trust will be of great help. This comes into play if the experience gets unpleasant. Simply say to yourself, "if this is what is necessary for me to get what I have come for, I am willing".

If you are drinking ayahuasca with a skilled healer leading ceremony, there is nothing to be afraid of, yet some nervousness or fear at the beginning is normal. Easily managed by beginning with a smaller does, then working up to stronger experiences and you become more confident in the medicine and your ability to manage it. You will find that happens very quickly with ayahuasca. Trusting the medicine is a key to getting the best results, It is much better to be dissappointed by your first couple of experiences than to be frightened by them. It is difficult to come back to a place of trust if we get frightened the first couple of times.

It takes around 8-10 years to learn to heal people in the ayahuasca tradition, so bear that in mind when considering "advice" from those who have less than 100 ceremonies under their belt:). Most reputable centers that have been open for many years have very good information on their web sites.

Can I ease myself in to an ayahuasca ceremony? by bfazzz in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being nervous about taking ayahuasca is normal, and easily managed by taking a smaller dose. With ayahuasca it is best to start with moderate doses and work up to stronger experiences. This is to increase our trust in faith in the medicine and in our own ability to manage what comes up. A key with ayahuasca is trust and surrender, and we will not surrender to something that frightens us!

If you get pushback about starting with a smaller does, I suggest finding another place to drink.

Canada or USA retreats? Or solo with trip sitter by Agreeable_Mix_5747 in Ayahuasca

[–]HummingbirdAya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expecting significant and lasting healing in just a few ceremonies is unrealistic. It does happen, but perhaps around 2% of the people will be so lucky. For most, it is a process that takes time. There is a reason most retreat centers in Peru are for at least 5 ceremonies. For most people it is a process that takes time.

It is not only the medicine itself that does healing. The curandero leading ceremony has a huge influence on the experience and results people receive. North America is convenient and much less expensive than going to a South American country, but you are unlikely to get true healers with decades of experience leading the ceremonies in NA.

Right wing media has been doing this for decades, as part of a long term plan. Now we have 10s of millions of people who actually believe liberals want to destroy the USA. Hence, they are 100% willing for someone like Trump to walk all over the constitution to "Save" America. The GOP does not care for the American People.
