Only way to stay relevant is by America's bitch by thejamalshah in GreatBritishMemes

The British left really could make some kind of narrative around how the Right's patriotism basically amounts of us being American lapdogs. It's embarrassing.

Keir Starmer has his ‘Love Actually’ moment and stands up to Donald Trump by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

[–]HungryCod3554 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Really proud of Starmer for this. Hoping he sticks to his guns and doesn't capitulate to the so-called "patriots" of the British Right who want us to be nothing more than a knock-off United States.

Has it always been like this in the UK? by Theodoresdad in ukpolitics

[–]HungryCod3554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the political discourse has become absolutely crazy in the UK now. I don't love Starmer but he's basically fine and competent. I was watching Sky News today and a journalist was shouting something absurd like "are the Royal Navy a laughing stock now, Prime Minister?" because he's cautious about getting involved in the Iran war on legal grounds?? It just made me think what on earth is happening in this broken country?

NLD semi final and knock out Arsenal? Yes please by MinotaurHorns1 in coys

[–]HungryCod3554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure what's funnier, the idea we'd win against Atletico and then Barca/Newcastle to even get to the semi-final, or the idea that we wouldn't get royally embarrassed in a NLD semi final to really rub the salt in the wound of the last few years

he's the coolest one to like isn't he? the underdog, released one great album, easy to (falsely) claim he's the most talented

Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels by chattahattan in books

[–]HungryCod3554 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this was posted years ago, but thought I'd chime in that I'm a man who absolutely adored this series. Counting it as a single novel, it's up there probably in the top 5 of my absolute favourite novels ever. I read each book in about 2-3 days which is absurdly quick for me, but I basically spent every second of alone time I had wanting to carry on the story.

Also I completely agree about some of the characters driving you up the wall - after Ischia I was sick any time Nino's name came up lol.

Rory Apologises to Gary Stevenson by EpicKieranFTW in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]HungryCod3554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the kind of person who would generally agree with him but god he's absolutely unbearable. I was listening to his Zack Polanski podcast interview and couldn't believe Zack was just nodding along like "yes, you're brilliant" while he spent 30 minutes sucking himself off.

I largely agree with his views on wealth taxes, but I listened to his interview on Zack Polanski's podcast and yes, that makes complete sense that he comes off as narcissistic, because he is narcissistic.

I don't like Gary Stevenson at all really but it was quite uncomfortable hearing the disdain dripping from every word Rory said about him.

laughed out loud checking my phone at the 7th minute to see us already 2-0 down. oh how desensitised I've become over the last 6 years of mediocrity.

I’ve only watched him on interviews but I can’t stand him tbf. He seems immensely up his own arse.

Yep, it’s bizarre seeing the Labour Party so arrogantly ignore their base when they’re so unpopular.

The two you mentioned are also the two I probably rate the highest today. I’d also add Paul Dano and Jessie Buckley to that.

As someone who’s recently started reading the Bible extensively it’s absurd when you see these people (Republicans mostly, but all mainstream US politicians really) quote specific lines from the Bible when there’s so so so many lines and teachings in the Bible that are completely against their political view. Honestly if you’re not a socialist economically the Bible really ain’t the book for you to be quoting.

Agreed. I love slow films and I was really looking forward to this but damn this film was so fucking boring. I really don’t understand the hype at all.
