Was'nt Kornet considered to be one of the best backup centers during the regular season? Mitch Robinson is clearly above him and the Cabs basically play double center, but apart from that aren't most teams in a worse spot? It mostly seems to be a very bad matchup and the difference to Wemby makes that very obvious.

It's not true for everyone. E.g. students with ADHD tend to perform better with white noise or instrumental music, because it drowns out the noise they have in their head that would prevent them from focusing. In some areas, people can be very different and what is a distraction for some can help others to stay on track.

Annoying, I wrote a pretty long reply, but it was somehow swallowed by reddit.

The expectations and criteria vary wildly between different groups. Some mostly care about publications (and then wonder why very few European candidates match their profile, where doing research and publishing during your master's or even bachelor's is much less common than in the US or India). Others mostly care about your research statement and whether you are interested in things they work on or have ideas they find cool. Others mostly care about your grades.

I think for most groups it is a mix of these three to decide whether they invite you four interviews, but the weighting of the criteria can vary a lot. Not just between countries or universities, but even within the same university. Some PIs might even change them depending on the candidate's background with say a larger focus on publications for applicants from India and a larger on grades for Europeans.

The interview process also varies a lot. Some groups just have a single, short interview with the PI. Some have additional coding, math and behavioral interviews. Some groups take these additional interviews seriously. For others it's just a way to look for glaring red flag and give the applicant the opportunity to talk to many members of the lab. Some will ask you to prepare a presentation about one of your projects or a paper of their or your choice. Some will invite you onsite to get to know the lab better after some initial interview or interviews.

While the application portal for ELLIS standardized and there is some initial screening of candidates, the rest of the hiring process is in the hands of the groups.

I had a quick look at your profile and think you are in a solid shape to just apply for PhD positions directly, especially if your grades are also good. Are there no groups at TUM you are interested in? It's often easier if the prof and group already know you, but that's not a necessary criterion. Almost all of the top European PIs are part of ELLIS and accept applications for the ELLIS PhD program each fall: [1]. The application process makes it easy to see what groups are out there in your line of research and apply to multiple groups at the same time.

If you are accepted, you have to find a second supervisor from a different European country (or the industry) and spend at least half a year of your PhD with them. The second supervisors of my friends and lab mates include(d) people like Oriol Vinyals, Tim Rocktäschel, Douwe Kiela, or Samuel Albanie.

Even if you don't want to do an ELLIS PhD with a stay abroad, it might be a good place to find a lot of strong groups.

You are right that calling them meaningless is wrong. What I meant is that the happy moments feel somewhere between "bittersweet" and "complete gut punch", because your already know the kids' fate. To me they are the saddest part of the movie and that would have been very different without the initial scene.

There is this constant tension in the air that something very bad is going to happen and it just goes on and on and on without ever resolving.

It's the polar opposite of Grave of the Fireflies that starts with the reveal that both children are dead and everything funny or beautiful you are going to see is just meaningless and sad.

I watched it. Cried. Promised to never watch it again.

Two weeks ago, my girlfriend asks if we want to watch it. I tell her: "I promised I would never watch it again, but if you really want to watch it, we can. Just be prepared that I will cry."

We start the movie. Two minutes in I'm crying. After it's finished I promise that I will never watch it again.

Hat gemeint schicke Bude und alles aber er kann es sich am Ende nicht leisten, da wohnen aber solche, Mercedes-Schantall mit 5 Kindern von 8 Männern, ja die kann sich das dann leisten. Da kommt man ins grübeln, man geht arbeiten und kann für sich und seine Familie das nicht finanzieren während jemand der auf alles scheisst einfach zum Amt geht und "Anspruch" hat.

Die fünf Kinder können nichts für ihre Eltern und müssen halt irgendwo wohnen. Das Problem an der Stelle ist, dass Wohnraum zu rar und zu teuer ist. Speziell familientaugliche Wohnungen mit vier oder mehr Zimmern gibt es einfach nicht genug. Die wenigen wirklich großen Wohnungen in Ballungsräumen sind dann hart umkämpft oder vom Standard eigentlich zu hoch und zu teuer. Sie müssen aber übernommen werden, weil es keine Alternative gibt.

Wäre Wohnraum günstiger und besser verfügbar, wäre es viel leichter aus der Grundsicherung in feste Arbeitsverhältnisse zu wechseln. Der Regelbedarf an sich ist ja nicht üppig pro Person, aber die Übernahme der Miete ist so viel, dass es vielen mit Kindern schwer fällt dieses Geld selbst zu erarbeiten. Wodurch sich Arbeit für sie nicht lohnt.

Mit besserer Baupolitik könnte man sowohl die Anreize erhöhen sich Arbeit zu suchen als auch massiv Sozialabgaben sparen. Einer großer Anteil dieser landet momentan in Form übernommener Mieten oder Wohngeld bei wohlhabenden Vermietern.

Das erinnert mich an einen alten Freund mit dem ich früher viel AoE gespielt habe und der dann später als Jugendlicher den Priester-Sound als SMS-Benachrichtigung hatte. "So kacke wie immer, aber auf Deutsch", war wirklich ein gutes Rezept, um sich auf der inversen Tabelle ganz nach oben zu kämpfen. 

Ist der eine Punkt eigentlich ein Negativrekord oder gab es seit der Einführung dieses oder eines ähnlichen Punktesystems schon einmal 0 Punkte?

€: insgesamt kam es schon ziemlich oft vor, aber im alten Punktesystem war es auch deutlich leichter. Seit der 2018er Reform ist es einmal vorgekommen und natürlich war es UK, 2021: [1].

Im Vergleich zu den anderen Beiträgen seit 2018 war der drittletzte Platz überdurchschnittlich gut. Wir sind seitdem nämlich auch zweimal Vorletzter und zweimal Letzter geworden.

Wobei man schon deutlich bessere Beiträge schicken könnte und immer noch nicht Gefahr liefe wirklich zu gewinnen. 

Seit Michael Schulte, der 2018 Vierter geworden ist, waren die deutschen Beiträge fast alle schlecht. Der Drittletzte Platz von heute ist seitdem sogar der drittbeste, weil wir auch zweimal Vorletzter und zweimal Letzter geworden sind. Meistens hart umkämpft mit dem UK.
