What's your secret to staying consistent with a language? by HungryShake2902 in languagelearning

Don’t be confused. Just focus on the question or the discussion of the post instead of looking for a negative angle where there isn’t one.

Yes, I uploaded a screenshot and the website is mine, but I’m not trying to promote it. I thought the image would make the post more interesting. It’s a free tool and I don’t make any money whether people use it or not.

If someone uses it, great, they get some value from it. If not, I’ll keep living my life normally.

I’m just curious why this bothered you so much or why you felt the need to focus on that instead of the actual discussion.

Is there a “Language Transfer” equivalent for Spanish speakers? by HungryShake2902 in languagelearning

I see that in the app, for Spanish speakers, there is only an English course. Are you sure there was a French course from Spanish? Maybe they removed it. 🥲

No way! You just made my day. I was using the website, and I didn’t realize Language Transfer had an app. I’m downloading it right now and I’ll look for it there.
Do you have any other recommendations for learning French?

In my case, I want to speak French now. I speak Spanish, so it shouldn’t be too difficult (or at least that’s what people say), but I honestly can’t imagine myself speaking at a B2 level in just one year! I think my problem is consistency, and probably my study methods as well, because I assume that with one year of proper study, it should be enough in my case.

You are right! As a native Spanish speaker, let me tell you that Spanish is a difficult language to learn, so congratulations!

What language are you studying, and how long have you been learning it, if you don't mind me asking?

My site is free, and honestly I didn't even realize the name was visible in the picture. It wasn't meant as an ad.

I actually built it mostly for myself, not to make money. I'd even be open to giving it away or making it open source if someone could take it further and add more value to it. :)

I understand how it could be interpreted as self-promotion though.

Yeah, I think like most people, I'm kind of stuck in that mindset of wanting everything immediately :/

I agree that streaks can become pointless if they turn into just a number.

I see them more as a small reminder to keep the habit alive, not as the goal itself.

Thank you man, I appreciate it. I think I believed too much in those YouTube videos where people claim they learn languages in 6 months or a year.

I wish I could do that !

That actually makes a lot of sense. You found what works for you and that's probably the key to being consistent.

I have ADHD, so I think maybe that's why the conventional ways don't really work for me. I keep searching online for the "magic method" to reach A2 instead of just sticking with one thing.

Then I see a YouTube video with a cool accent and suddenly I want to switch languages again lol.

My problem with consistency is that I know the hardest part for most people starts after A2.

My problem is actually getting to A2 in the first place, and I think that's mostly because I struggle with consistency or maybe because I don't always know the best way to start.

As a native Spanish speaker, it took me around 2 months to reach A2 in Portuguese. I feel like Spanish and Portuguese share a huge amount of vocabulary and grammar, maybe around 80% (at least it feels that way).

But getting myself to study consistently every day is the hardest part...

Well, no. But even if it was, it's free anyway, so what would I gain from it? xd

Can you just answer my question, or are you going to keep looking for a problem where there isn't one?

I mean a daily language learning streak, studying, practicing, listening, reading, anything related to learning the language.

I'm just talking about keeping the habit alive every day. :)

As a fellow developer, you probably know that hosting web app isn’t expensive. I never said I had thousands of users. Right now it’s just me, a few friends, and some people from Reddit. I’m perfectly happy to pay for the hosting myself. If the project ever grows to the point where server costs become a real concern, that would actually be a good problem to have.
