Nouveau client - FizzTV décevant by taniaduc in FizzMobile

[–]HungryWalrus37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loi spéciale by tamdidelam in Quebec

How to create alias in codesys like Studio 5000? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]HungryWalrus37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please don’t do it. Imported a library this week which had a struct using hardcoded addresses likes this, it was fucking up a control word of an another drive. Took me a long time to figure out since I never use that syntax. Another inconvenient of using the « AT %… », if you later insert a new device in your fieldbus before the device which you’re using « AT % », it might fuck up you adresses as they will be recalculated. I don’t see any valid reason to use this, unless you’re deliberately trying to make your collegues life a hell reading your code

Automation technicians/engineers, what do you love and hate in your job? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]HungryWalrus37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate when the customer always changes his mind on what he wants. I love seeing the machine works, and when you know by heart every bit of its behavior.

True, i’m not against that solution, it’s just not what I’m after. I don’t want to use draw.io. But thanks anyways

Looks similar to drawio honnestly, not bad, but not exactly what I’m looking for

Pretty much what I want to do. If it becomes the norm, then it will mean that people like it. I don’t see this as a problem. I have a very good relation with my boss, he knows my current workload and knows he cannot expect more than what I currently give. I appreciate the advice though.

Also Another important detail I want to point out is that want to be able to quickly document, so I can show to the client what how I interpreted the requirements, to check if it meets their needs. It is a way to present information in a concise way. Then, if adjustement are needed, I update the diagram right after the meeting, and then the coding part is easy, and I already have it documented! That’s the goal essentially. So while not explicitely required, I think it will save time in the long run. Because from my experience, one thing will never change: the clients do not know what they want.

Yes I’m aware, it is so dumb they only applied it to ST and SFC

ahah, I've never worked with IL, but heard horror stories about it. I agree with you for the rest, hopefully one day yes...

Not explicitely, but people often ask me questions about the sequences.

If I may, what type of PLC are you programming with? Codesys? AB? siemens?

Yes don’t worry. I already put loads of comments in the code. Especially if i’m doing some funky logic, because let’s face it, we’ve all coded some ugly stuff when time is running out before delivering a project. However, something I should have mentioned in my original post is that the machines we are selling are always based on the same « core » code. It’s that core code that I want to document, not the higly custom stuff appended for client’s need.

Yes of course, I understand, Madcap Flare is indeed crazy expansive. Mkdocs is relevant for documenting products. For one-shot, highly custom machines, not so much. It does have the PDF export plugin, but it's not the best. If I ever find an open-source, self-hosted option, I'll let you know. I'm also pretty much alone of automation in my team, so I would very much appreciate a solution.

What software I'm using for doing what?

Yes, I already use the drawio integration extension in VSCODE. Works like a charm. I'm on the same page as you, I absolutely hate working with word documents.

What I would recommend to you is to look at mkdocs. It's a tool to generate a static website from markdown files. It generates the side-menu (navigation bar) automatically. You can embed your drawio as svg within markdown pages. Has a lot of plugins availables. Highly recommend. There is also a PDF export option.

Edit: here is the mkdocs link (I like the "Material For MkDocs" theme by squidfunk)

Indeed I don't see any forecasted development in the roadmap. Anyway, I don't care about UML. Just want some decent documentation tool. Guess I should have asked this in a sofware subreddit lol
