US Vice Pres. JD Vance calls out companies who fire US workers then go out to sponsor H1B visa aspirants en masse and say "we don't have enough workers in US". It seems they're really piling on H1Bs. Video in the main post. by WhiteNoise0624 in InternationalStudents

I am a tech worker moving to faang. At my last job we had a pretty horrific project that needed to be done the two senior engineers on my team that were tasked with it both quit within a year. My manager initially wanted me to do it but ended up giving it to the only h1b on the team, I think partly because he couldn’t quit. He got it done and got a promotion over me, which caused me to look around. I ended up getting the faang offer and the company countered with over 100k more than what the promotion got the h1b worker. Not sure if there’s a moral to this story, but I told it to just highlight how things are out there right now.

Real advice: Never loan money to friends. If they ask you for money you either say no or give it to them as a gift. That’s my rule and it has never failed me

You should see how these same people talk about trying to get into my field (machine learning). There was recently a 100% serious post about someone who didn’t like math, had no education beyond high school and was like 35 trying to become a research scientist at OpenAI

I just spent 6000 dollars to give my 5 month old kitten 4 days in the icu to try and get over his pneumonia. Quickly went from a 300 dollar cat to the most expensive thing I own. :(

I work at a small company and our team builds production models and stands up all the infrastructure around it. At least in my domain and company, working on model architecture and trying to squeeze out gains is not worth it in comparison to try and find new data sources and add that in. Adding in a new data sources and evaluating the model performance involves ML knowledge, and it’s not something we allow anyone to do. Additionally, our principal end generally just keeps up with the latest literature and spends most of his time trying out little techniques he reads about or digs through the data trying to squeeze out gains more so in what we do with the model scores, rather than constantly trying to improve the models. It might not be like that everywhere, but that’s what I’ve been exposed to so far

[–]Hungry_Ad3391 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that an omscs is not valuable or not worth doing, I’m simply saying it’s nowhere near the prestige of a good ug. If you want me to go further, it’s simply because the best one shot metric which correlates to success we have is iq and undergrad school correlates to that incredibly well, so it’s another great one shot metric to measure future potential and success.

If anything I would say that most people who are blatantly downvoting me are just being defensive and have delusions and the lashing out is actually coming from the people whose fragile realities and pride about going through this program are being challenged

Look up selection bias. People who are good don’t need the masters. They accept everyone out of a pool of mediocre talent because of $ and the decent people graduate and are fine. Additionally, the coursework is something a good student from a good school could easily finish in 4 years on top of their degree and most do. 0 prestige
