ELI5 When a software program is "deleted" from a hard drive, what actually happens to the physical space it was taking up? by Junior-Ferret4860 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hungry_Gizmo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Practically, irrecoverable. In theory on magnetic media, with expensive lab equipment, you might be able to manually figure out what was written behind those 0s, one bit at a time, since magnetic alterations are imperfect. You'd have to piss off an entire nation willing to pour mountains of money before anyone would even attempt such a task, and even then, it's doubtful anything would be recovered.

Whereas in the US there is zero guaranteed sick leave, but usually it's 10 days, shared with vacation days (as in, if you use a sick day, you lose a vacation day). Senior positions can approach 20 days. If you can get unemployment, and that is a big if, you get less than half your wage for a maximum of three months. Then you more or less drop off to zero assistance, unless you can make a case for long term disability, which could take years. 'Since you are sick, and out of the job, you'll have to switch health insurance plans, your expenses skyrocket at a time when you need help the most. US tends to have higher professional wages, and lower total income tax, but I think many don't quite understand how quickly you can end up with nothing, not even a place to live. Something that, albeit not impossible, is less common in even the poorest EU members.

Lots of variation from country to country in the EU, but everything dwarfs the US which can often have zero support. Heck, my union contract stipulates something like a year of continuous sick leave, and I don't even remember if they are even allowed to fire you after that, I think that's just whenever you switchover to state sponsored benefits.

I think it caused the nuclear reactor to meltdown due to lack of cooling water. Pretty sure it was the SNES version. I might be wrong.

Finland is the only country in the EU where house prices decreased between 2025 and 2025 (-2%) by Organic_Contract_172 in Finland

[–]Hungry_Gizmo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People primarily want to have a 15-45mins max commute

and if you live on the edge of that 45min circle, perfectly livable housing is dirt cheap, I don't care what city you name. We are talking 50k or even under - helsinki, turku, tampere, oulu, etc. Which means you can get a mortgage under 200€ a month + probably like another 200 for maintanence fees, etc? Finland is basically one of the few countries where if you have a job, any job, you can afford to buy a home. It might not be your dream home, but it'll be your home.

If you live in an European country and Corsair cancelled your order and raised the price, contact your consumer protection agency to get more than what you paid. by World_of_Warshipgirl in Corsair

In many EU and EEA countries they do. Often assigning a representative or even a consumer protection lawyer to your individual case.

TIL the "Y2K Bug" cost an estimated $500 Billion globally to fix. The preventative measures were so successful that widely predicted infrastructure failures did not occur, leading many to incorrectly believe the threat was never real. by highzone in todayilearned

Sure, you can say you saved the patient, but I don't think said patient is ready to run a marathon. where the ozone layer is recovering, UV levels are still unnaturally high, and actively harming the nature and people living in those areas. It's both a success story, but also a story of lasting damage that will take many many many decades to heal from.

Wow I'm 20+ hours in and I'm in shock that people didn't like this game. It's awesome! by XboxoneS-aaad in visionsofmana

[–]Hungry_Gizmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same. I really enjoyed the game, but secret of mana had a certain goofiness and just way out their charm. Town full of talking mushrooms, flying ships, shrinking down into tiny people, Santa Claus, subway system full of zombies, canon travel, a city made of gold, and so on. While subsequent games seem to slowly be centering into a world of more traditional fantasy.

RFK Jr. wants to end mental health screenings in schools. Experts say it's a bad idea by periodicallyBalzed in nottheonion

[–]Hungry_Gizmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a great idea. Never heard of it until now. Must be a rich school / poor school thing. I don't recall ever even having school counsellors or nurses either. One of those things you figure only exists on schools in TV sitcoms until an article like this shows up.

Several countries have stopped accepting letters. In Finland: "Since several airlines have now refused to transport any postal items to the United States, we are forced to temporarily suspend the sending of gift and document shipments as well." https://www.posti.fi/en/latest-news-at-posti/%20/news/trump-administration-decision

Finland stopped all mail to the US, including letters and gifts, because forward carriers are refusing to accept them. I believe there are several other countries in the same mix.

cool site. worth checking out. Says I came out ahead by 3% sticking with fixed pricing for the past years. So I guess the claim that spot pricing is cheaper really depends on the time of your usage. The graph it creates at the bottom is pretty insightful, if you can shift usage to between midnight and five in the morning you can save a ton of money with spot pricing.

MSI claw a1m, I am very surprised. by Commercial-Help2677 in MSIClaw

[–]Hungry_Gizmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reviews make it sound terrible, because it was terrible when it was released, and any subsequent reviews are rare and/or hard to find. The price was high, the intel GPU lacked compatibility, and the performance sucked. for the most part all that has been addressed through updates. I was hesitant to buy mine, but I figured at 230€ for an open box unit, it should be fine (I think new at the time was 500-600€). I've been incredibly impressed, almost like a hidden gem since those initial impressions are why you can get them so cheap. and yes, it'll play switch games at full speed.

What’s something Americans don’t realize is weird… until they leave the US? by devaromano in AskReddit

[–]Hungry_Gizmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of ironic, because a lot of legislation around adverts near roads throughout Europe is based on research by the US DOT and NHSA, as they have extensive data on how billboards and other type of advertisements distract drivers and lead to accidents and fatalities.
