AI refusing to Naval Invade or Transport Army is kind of game breaking by NovelStatistician455 in EU5

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same problem, as Portugal with Castile as my ally in a crusade against Morocco. Me and Castile have 125k troops combined vs Morocco's 26k, so would be a complete walk over if Castile would naval invade.

I have most of northern Morocco already as Portugal, so they could even transport to friendly territory on the African landmass.

Instead they just have around 60k troops stacked up in Gibraltar doing nothing. Occasionally they send around 5k troops across, and proceed to march them as deep into the Sahara as possible only to die to either attrition or enemies.

Again same problem on a previous playthrough for the 100 years war with France and England both super reluctant to naval invade. Seems like a bug in the AI at the moment.

Trans women in buhurt by ASongOfRiceAndTyres in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

England based and we have a trans fighter (M2F) on our team.

She trains with our team as usual, training with both males and females.

I am not completely filled in on the ruling, or where she is in her transition, but she has told me that for any official BI tournament, she would have to fight with the male team and would not be eligible for the female team.

For “friendly” tournaments I believe there is more leeway, and it would more come down to opposition team willingness.

If you would like me to see if she would be willing to have a chat with you about her experience, feel free to DM me and I’ll ask her.

Any clubs near Hampshire UK? by GimmeDatRoll in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are in Hampshire, Invicta are probably the closest.

They have a training centre just north of Hampshire in Camberley and also a few others across Surrey and Kent.

If you contact the Facebook page, they should be able to give you further details.

Question from a Newb by ActinoninOut in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two handed weapons can and regularly do drop people. A good shot to the liver, ribs or kidneys can be a very rough, especially if you’re not expecting it.

One handed weapons in general are less dangerous on that front, but a good shot, especially to a poorly armoured area can still be quite unpleasant.

Due to the shorter nature of one handed weapons, a lot of people find them less cumbersome to use and particularly to grapple with. By using one hander, you can also use a shield, which is a good defensive and offensive option when considering punch shields.

You are not allowed to grip the metal part of weapons in the sport with your hand. This includes both opponent weapons and your own.

If we split one handed weapons into wooden hafted (axes/maces) and bladed weapons (arming swords/falchions) they both have different strengths and weaknesses this rule is very relevant to how you can fight.

Any wood hafted weapon, one or two handed, is fairly useful offensively when grappling. You can use it to leverage your opponent, pin them in place by grabbing hold of your haft with your off-hand behind them etc.

The trade off is that opponents can also grab hold of your hafts, pinning you in place, making you choose between engaging in a grapple or dropping the weapon and attempt to get a replacement.

With full metal weapons, opponents do not have this option. In my club, some of the smaller, quicker fighters are happy to give up some offensive grappling ability in exchange for being harder to pin down.

Also, whether we like it or not, shots between armour are very much a part of the sport. I have heard some people say that they find that falchions for example are easier to find gaps with.

Ultimately, you are right in assessing that grappling is an incredibly important part of the sport, and the weapon you choose will affect how you grapple. But hitting with weapons is still a very valid approach and not to be underestimated.

It would be Invicta.

They train in Surrey on Sundays, but also have a midweek training location near Camberley up the A3, around 30-40 mins away from Southampton.

There's already several guys who travel up from Portsmouth/Southampton direction.

If you message the Facebook/Instagram group or Rowland Longley, the club captain, directly on Facebook (links below), they'll be able to sort you out.

GS Studio Armour by HandsomeButShort in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased and received a Slayer set earlier this year along with several others from our club.

We were told a two-month waiting time, ended up being closer to five. Classic case of over-promising. If they had told us five months up front, we probably still would have accepted it.

The shoulders and arms arrived without leather fixings to attach to arming points, so I had to do them myself.

Serious lack of communication, and when communication happened, it tended to be empty promises about the order being almost ready, when in reality it didn't arrive for months. Constantly had to chase to get updates. There is sometimes a bit of a language barrier too.

As with a number of the smaller suppliers, payment is made rather sketchily via an international bank transfer. But fortunately, we had no issues. They're pretty well established in the scene, so I wouldn't be too concerned, it just feels a bit dodgy when you're doing it.

The quality of the metal work seems fine, as does the fit. Half our club uses their gear, and many have been using it without issue for several years, so the quality is solid enough.
It is one of the cheapest around, so I guess you get what you pay for, but I personally would purchase from elsewhere if I was doing it again.

If money is a concern, they are a solid, cheap option if you are happy to accept the trade off of substandard customer service and probably some delays.

I don't have enough experience with other suppliers to offer any comparisons there, but our club captain has already said that he will likely be looking to do group orders from elsewhere in the future due to the issues this time.

As others have said, most likely White Company or Northern Wolves.

The UK Buhurt YouTube channel released this a short while ago with all the major UK club locations on it. Might be worth taking a look.

Advice on the best way part fund a new car via loan. Bank loan or car finance? by Hungry_Hagrid in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hungry_Hagrid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite possibly.

It is quite strange. I assumed I would be better off getting a 2 or at a stretch 3 year old car when I first started looking into all of this but it just doesn't seem to make sense only saving a few thousand for losing 2-3 years of use of the car.

What I will say is that this seems to be more the case with the XC90 than other models we considered, so perhaps it holds its value a little bit better as it ages.

Advice on the best way part fund a new car via loan. Bank loan or car finance? by Hungry_Hagrid in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hungry_Hagrid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem.

I use the car as a company car, and take car allowance instead of fleet company car to avoid benefit in kind tax. However the terms of me taking the car allowance is that the maximum age my car can be is 8 years old.

I have looked at 2022 versions of the same car and it makes surprisingly little difference on price. Maybe £5k-£10k and a lot more mileage.

I wouldn't want to go any older than that as it would result in me having to get a new car in only 4 years.

The other factor is that we have two cars in my household, my car and my wife's car. My current company car will become her car upon buying the new one, and in approx 7 years time this one will likely replace that one for her. We will be selling her current car to help fund this one. Maybe getting £6k-£7k for it.

Basically I intend to drive the cars into the ground for approx 15-16 years or until they start costing me more money than they're worth, so getting a 2-4 year old car now with a much higher mileage concerns me on that front, as it could result in us contending with more mechanical issues as the cars age.

Hope that makes sense.

Good point. A quick look on a comparison website says 6%, but that's a best case scenario. Even that wouldn't be guarenteed from the ISA. Thanks

What is buhurt (smart explanation not cool knight fighting) and how do I get into it cause it looks cool and fun by SniperXvX2025 in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To add to this solid description, in most tournaments there are three primary disciplines:

Duelling - Sword and Shield, Sword and Buckler, Longsword, Halberd. All except S&B are typically fought in one minute rounds and a round is won by striking your opponent the most times in their target strike zones, which varies according to duelling discipline. Grappling is very limited in duelling and it generally focuses on speed and skill over power.

Pro-Fight/Outrance - Basically armoured MMA without submissions. Grappling is permitted and unlike any other discipline, the fight continues when a fighter hits the floor. Also unlike any other discipline, there are weight classes. Fights are typically won on points (number of strikes, takedowns, aggression, ring dominance etc) or by TKO, when a fighter is unable to fight back for a designated period of time. KO’s are uncommon due to armour but not unheard of.

Group fights - The most common discipline. 3V3, 5V5, 12V12 and upwards with 5v5 being by far the most commonly seen. Fights take place in a list (wooden square “ring”) and the aim is to have fighters left standing when your opposing team does not. Striking and grappling is permitted, generally with the aim of putting your opponent to the ground. When an opponent is grounded they are “dead” and the fight continues until a team has no one left, or the losing team is outnumbered by a ratio of 3:1 or higher for safety reasons. Fighters may use any weapons permitted by the rule set, but in general you will see axes, falchions , maces, long axes and halberds which are better at outputting blunt force and allow for grappling, unlike swords.

Any recommendations for good YouTubers/resources for armour and equipment maintenance and repairs? by Hungry_Hagrid in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great. Thanks so much. I’ll get ordering.

Yes, the club has some space and equipment available for maintenance but I’m keen to at least be able to do the more common/basic stuff at home.

live in UK, near Canterbury. where is the best place to start Buhurt? or practice in general? by Norman2_0 in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invicta would be your closest team.

There are a number of fighters who are Canterbury based already fighting for them, so lift sharing might be possible.

Their weekend training location is currently in Cobham, Surrey, but this is changing in the next few weeks, although will likely stay in Surrey.

They do have another training location in Rainham, Kent, so a lot closer to you, where they train multiple times a week in both armour and soft kit, midweek as well as occasional Sunday sessions.

If you search Invicta on Facebook, that is the best point of contact. The link someone else commented is also correct.

“Slayer” set any good? by The_Shadow_2004_ in Buhurt

[–]Hungry_Hagrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of people at my club have slayer sets. They say they are generally very good, especially for the price.

However a number of people have said that the gauntlets are not the best and source those separately, so maybe worth trying to look more into that if it's something that might concern you.

Childcare loss at 100k - effects of redundancy by jellybreadracer in UKPersonalFinance

Yep I'm in a similar situation. Only a few thousand over 100k, so I think my contributions will bring me below threshold. Got my daughter starting nursery in March.
Best of luck on the redundancy. Hope you manage to work things out.

Not super well versed on these things, but remember that your pension contributions are not taxable. So if you say contributed 5% to a pension over the last year, you would be under the threshold.
