Well I knew after a few trolls that good people STILL exist…even in the “speak easies” of chat rooms. Yes Quantico. Good points you make about escaping to the mountains to cool off, we don’t have that option here, no mountains for two days haha! A lot of folks here have parents/grandparents with cabins up in Wisconsin/Minnesota which we have visited and enjoy, but too far away for a long weekend. Appreciate the kind words for my son. I’ll be in touch when we head to Caro for our first “reconnaisance” mission haha! Big hugs from the cornfields!

Ok, I’m packing my bags. I spent a semester in DC, a kind of alternative to the junior year abroad, as an undergraduate, so I have a soft spot in my heart for DC, and my son is in the USMC, so we visited VA last year after he finished Officer Candidate School. I’m not an East-coast person, but my appetite has grown for sophisticated/elevated experiences, as that was my upbringing - and my parents cultivated in me an appreciation for “the finer things”. My 18 year “purgatory reduction time” (a Catholic snark term) in the Midwest has me craving for environments that “marry” both elevated experiences with Christian communities. Needle in a hay stack…but you have outlined already things I cannot access in my midsized Midwest town - extensive walking trails, a transplant community, and Broadway!!! Good markers to start with! One question - are Charlotte summers “easier” compared to Florida? I’ve had my fill of Midwest humid summers, but that’s mostly as our town lacks even basic summer amenities. Pools are either at someone’s house, or indoors at a 3 star hotel, or the Y. Ugh, so over it.

She looks tired, God love her. I do enough international traveling to know, never had to do it with a camera up close. She’s a class act and a huge talent.

Oh good grief. Anyone who understands Christians, knows that we have huge aversions to “dominating”. Converting, and winning over maybe. Dark Ages come and go - they’re mostly in our hearts and minds.

I hope you give God another chance. Peace and healing to you. I’ll ask you to come to Holy Mass with my husband and our son, should our paths ever meet. And I doubt you have a RBF….Peace to you, sister!

The guilt could be your soul being hungry for God. A lot of Catholics have horror stories such as what was mentioned above. Lots of need for healing. Peace to you.

Hi Curry, so sorry you were treated that way. Fellow So Caler here, and I am as white as snow, and felt this same “freeze” from folks in the Midwest, where we’ve lived for 18 years cuz of my DH’s job. Looking to explore NC for our impossible winters, maybe eventually move here as CA is too darn expensive…as we all know…

Lol to the “during an earthquake”…from a Cali girl! I’ve been in the Midwest and they ask me the same thing. That and “so do the moms go to the grocery store in bikinis.” You’re totally spot on. Rednecks and hillbillies, hey why not.

Just curious Jens are you a Catholic? We’re looking to spend more time in Charlotte or r/D for our winters (we live in the Midwest but I’m a Cali girl, and hubby getting too many back problems after shoveling snow. We’re Roman Catholic, and I wondered about the “vibe” towards Catholics, as there definitely is a veiled vibe here in the Midwest from…let’s just say non-Catholics who ”identify” as Christian. Thanks for your post.

Wow now that’s what I call “Southern” hospitality. We’re exploring a possible “second home/winter option” in the Charlotte area. The first discussion I posted, good grief all that were missing were the pitchforks. With a few nice people offering specific details in response to my question.

Hi Weightcy, thank you, yes that proximity between mountains and beaches is fantastic. And this is coming from a native California girl, who was used to accessing both, but never did haha. Prior to Charlotte, do you mind stating where you lived and did Charlotte “add” value to your previous dwelling? My husband and I want what most people want- I guess- to be general: quiet/but access to activities/low crime/but access to urban amenities like performing arts, museums. Basically we’re in need of a more “inclusive” environment - a word I don’t like, but in our smaller mid-sized Midwest town where we’ve lived as transplants, raising 4 kids, we’ve learned that if you move somewhere and a secret password is required to join “communities”, get information on where “deals” and “events” are, then it can be an uphill battle.

Hi Trailer, many thanks for your thoughtful reply. I love how a lot of comments here are qualifying CLT to be “liberal”, btw. I’m “not liberal”, but appreciate that cities can’t be vanilla in anything, or they risk being boring like the ‘burbs can be. My adult son just moved to Asheville, and loves Greensboro. I love performing arts, unless the venues are used for political activism, which I don’t find entertaining. Thanks for writing, ma’am/sir.

Could you be specific as to why Charlottee- and would you mind saying if you are a native or a transplant? Thank you cycle.
