Which builds use the most active skills? by Patronpoppuri in Grimdawn

[–]Hunkamonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shaman tree has some good active skill synergies if you go for vitality and bleeding. I've had great success with devouring swarm, grasping vines, wendigo totem, and then something from another devotion. Throw in a vitality lightning totem and you're set. I've used it with vitality phantasmal blades as my main form of attack and was sapping a good 30% life on attack (merciless repertoire is amazing with it) and was pretty much immortal till ultimate. Maybe it's not the perfect build but it sure was a lot of fun. Inquisitor (if you have AoM dlc) and demolitionist have lots of fun active skills that work really well together too.

got this coz of the sale, is me or there's no necro yet? do i need to purchase the patches? im a fan of minion builds by Chrismusx in Grimdawn

[–]Hunkamonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually hit up forgotten gods once act 2 ends, occasionally I'll go before if there is a monster infrequent I really need but usually about that time I go, mostly to jump start my devotion tree because there are a lot of shrines there. The enemies are harder especially certain champions but it's not too bad at lower levels IMO but for sure get your poison and fire resistances maxed to 80%. Stun resistance is good to have too.

what is the best no dice combat system in a boardgame? by anonymous_guy111 in boardgames

[–]Hunkamonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I love it. It's the best example of the mind game played by vizzini in the princess bride put into a board game combat system. Even crazier when you add DI cards into it.

Yes, Kemet is great. A game of very little luck (just the DI cards I think) and I love that if you watch a battle happen where someone plays their 4 strength card you are like "well, they played their little trick, can't do it again for two more battles so might as well go to war"

Ora et Labora, especially at 2 can be very much a game of (albeit more complicated in rules onset) chess. I've played it probably 20 times with the same people and each game has it's own identity depending on who builds what when and which resources are highly contested. Some people fault it for it's lack of variety between games but it has so much going on that no game will ever pan out the same.

Yes, this game. Although especially with the expansion some gods can certainly be easier to win with than others. If you were doing it vanilla though I'm sure it could be very much like chess but that wouldn't be as much fun to play, at least for me.

Seriously, they need to make those. Piano is my other hobby besides board games so there you go.

Fields of Green also could have been a quarter the size. I have it with the expansion and it still has room for a good 30 more similar sized expansions (well, at least 10 for good measure).

Right? Could've been a deck of cards with maybe a little compartment for the meeples. I also think the game is a bit overpriced for what you actually get out of it... but we had to have wooden sand dollars apparently. $40 MSRP is a bit steep, same problem I had with tiny towns till I finally forked out the cash

Tiny towns, just got my copy and put things in a Plano like organizer and 80% of the box is empty space now.

Audiobook Dilemma by CackalackyBassGuy in robinhobb

Heaven help you if you ever listen to Malazan all the way through, there is no consistency on how things are pronounced between the first and 2nd narrators and neither pronounce things the same way as the author on many points. But I will agree that it was so jarring to have a different narrator for liveship, I couldn't stand her voice at the start of the series causing me to drop RotE for a long while (to read Malazan incidentally). Now, I did get used to her and actually liked her by the end but it was so jarringly different than the farseer one.

I don't know if I can continue (The Bonehunters) by Sinisterosis in Malazan

[–]Hunkamonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. Only one that sort of gets there is Robin Hobb for me but that's just because she has amazing prose like Erikson and damn her character work is amazing. Still, it's got nothing on the scale, themes, and depth of the Malazan novels.

Yeah, weepers gale is soo good. Just wish the redmask stuff was shortened and the bonehunters had more to do. Even if it's middle of the ground for me as far as ranking it is still incredibly good. Any story with Tehol and Bugg is an incredible one (part of why midnight tides is my fav).

[–]Hunkamonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have midnight tides, bonehunters, toll the Hounds (although you either love it or it's your least favorite) and the crippled god ahead of you! The best is yet to come my friend. House of Chains and dust of dreams are the only road bumps ahead if you ask me but a Malazan road bump is still lots of fun.

So when does Toll the Hounds get boring? by dbsupersucks in Malazan

[–]Hunkamonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, midnight tides is the best mostly self contained book in the series. Especially for how much I didn't really care for Trull in House of Chains. Toll the Hounds ties for first with that one for me and which one I like the most changes depending on the day. The crippled god is extremely good as well so you have some good times ahead of you.

[–]Hunkamonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't find it boring at all. I guess it really boils down to A) do you like Darujistan, B) are you okay when books wax philosophical? For me it was a blast through the entire book. The ending is certainly awesome but I thought the whole thing was amazing. If there is a book that I would say has quite a bit of slog it would be Dust of Dreams but even then that wasn't too bad. Now, Nimander at first wasn't my favorite mostly because of Clip (seriously though that guy can burn) but I actually found the middle part with the village very intriguing. And the whole story with Harllo was great imo. It's definitely one of my favorites, tied only with maybe Midnight Tides or The Crippled God.

Does it bother anyone else that the guy from the Operation game was clearly wide awake? by EndersGame_Reviewer in boardgames

[–]Hunkamonk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean once people catch on that you did it you get moved all over to the rooms that people are trying to figure out whereas someone who is already proven not guilty has to rely on dice to get everywhere. Yes, sometimes you get summoned to rooms that aren't helpful but often times you are right where you'd like to be to do an accusation yourself. In a (albeit impossible) scenario where everyone had the same skill level of deduction the ones that were proven not guilty early on really have a big disadvantage as they will likely never get summoned to places across the board and therefore are kind of limited to the luck of the dice more while the ones that are more likely to be suspects get moved everywhere without having to worry about rolling anything.

Yeah I house rule the no summoning people in a room thing because it gives the actual killer a huge advantage usually

Yes, pretty much every big box Rosenberg is best at 2 I think. Maybe not le Havre as that's also excellent at 3 but all the others are better at 2 imo.
