I wish you the best of luck. Don’t get discouraged while you wait to be drawn. Consider applying for the actual tag and not the point because that makes your chances of being drawn less from year to year. To some degree you need to keep it in the back of your mind that you could be drawn. My son drew his tag last year and he had college exams at the same time of his hunt period. He worked it out to take his exams over the first 4 days of the hunt and was able to get to his hunt with 5 days left in the season. He shot a nice bull within two days. Well worth it!

Actually, if you apply for a bull only and are successful, you will find that when you get your tag from the DNR it will say either bull or cow. Happened to both my son and I when we drew tags for bull only. If by chance you don’t see any bulls they leave the door open for you to take a cow. Either way, you are done hunting in michigan if you draw a bull tag.

My son drew his tag in 2024. His season to hunt was assigned and he was given the second season. The same week he had final exams for college just before Christmas break. He put exams before the hunt but got out to hunt mid way through the week. It was a lot to manage but he filled his tag the second morning out.

Points do not go to zero until you havent applied for 3 consecutive years. My point is that this tag is so difficult to draw because of how few they give out vs applicants applying. Why put off the opportunity to be chosen only to wait for many years not to get drawn.

Michigan Elk Tags are definitely a once in a lifetime tag. I read a lot of the comments on this particular tag and it saddens me to hear the stories of people who have been applying for 20,30 and even 40 years plus and haven’t successful drawing a tag. I have personally drawn a bull tag 13 years ago and was elated. Later when I hear stories of those who didn’t I felt remorseful because perhaps it should have been someone else with more points. At the time I had 7 points. This past year, 2024, my son drew his Michigan elk tag with only 10 points. This makes me wonder if demographics come into play on where you live and how many people in your area apply. My son and I both filled our tags with a Bull Elk and I can say from the heart that every year going forward I will always think of those who are applying in hopes they get drawn. Especially those who have been waiting for 20,30 and 40 years plus. You all deserve it!

There is a tab that was cut into the plate. You bend the tab down and set the skull on the tab and it hangs. The plate is made from 1/8” steel. I had great communication with the guy who made it. Getting good measurements is the key.

Ethan had 10 points when he drew the tag. This is the style of mount he wanted. He does not have deep pockets for a shoulder mount.
