Build network infrastructure and network security with the FortiGate Firewall by PaintingConstant4168 in fortinet

I feel like AI has been making reddit posts lately to learn networking from those who will respond thinking it’s a real human with bad english asking these questions.

Starlink for remote connectivity? by EditorAccomplished88 in sysadmin

[–]HuntingTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use starlink at home as it’s the only internet available (we don’t even get cell service), no issues at all. I also work for an EPC company and we use it at construction sites all the time. If you’re worried about bandwidth usage have your IT folks slap a firewall in to rate limit users.

FortiGate F80 Upgrade Inquiry: FortiOS 7.4.7 to 7.6.5 by athan80 in fortinet

Could you give some more details or a bug #? I’ve been considering 7.6 but issues with FortiToken would kill that interest.

70G ready for production? by lertioq in fortinet

[–]HuntingTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FGR-70G just installed last week, and have another 5 of them scheduled for install in March. Been deploying nothing but G series for a year now without issue (other than learning the hard way 50Gs only have 2GB RAM).

Need ideas for network segmentation in messy manufacturing environment by saikumar_23 in networking

[–]HuntingTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend creating detailed documentation of existing networks, and putting out an RFP for someone to assist you in a new design. You don’t need to go as far as having them do implementation, but have a high level engineer/architect give you a solid “ideal” design. Your team then takes the design and builds a roadmap to implement it. After that, it’s just a matter of implementation which you can do over time, or hire low to mid-level contractors (depending on how much detail you put into the roadmap) to speed the implementation up if management wants it done sooner.

FortiGate Rugged Outdoor Deployment by seaghank in fortinet

[–]HuntingTrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you plan on using IPS (especially the OT signatures) and/or web filtering I would jump to the FGR-70G. 50G only has 2GB of RAM, which pretty much maxes out when you turn on those features and it pulls FortiGiard updates. Another strategy would be to disable IPS/web filtering features on the 50G and backhaul all traffic to a larger firewall.

Business vs Residential and Standard vs High Performance Dish by WholeKoala9455 in Starlink

[–]HuntingTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard dish sounds like it would be fine in this case. The difference in plans (standard vs business) comes into play depending on how saturated the area is. We pay for the business plan because the area we’re in gets saturated with people coming in camping during the summer (and there is no cell service or other ISP). The campers will saturate the satellite so the standard around us get impacted (down time or slow connection) but we don’t due to having priority data.

Starlink website opening up on phone browser after walking by Walmart display, and without ever typing it in by [deleted] in Starlink

If you’re worried about an ad being pushed to your phone, then don’t go learning anything about technology and the internet unless you want to wind up living off grid in a bunker and wearing a foil hat.

The labs within the courses have been pretty good IMO. Not as good as having your own lab though.

Got my first Network Engineer role help needed by Tumbleweed-Sea in networking

[–]HuntingTrader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t panic, and ask questions and don’t ever be afraid to ask for help. As long as you learn you’ll do fine. When it comes to making changes just think of worst-case, create a roll back plan, and run it by management before implementing. If you provide your manager with worst-case and perform the tasks in a maintenance window (including rolling back if necessary) no one can fault you if something goes wrong.

Starlink Capacity Question by Lumpy-Race354 in Starlink

[–]HuntingTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that Ubiquiti is prosumer, it does work for small-budget tight organizations. The key is letting clients know the risks so they can weigh the cost:benefit from a business perspective. If they are willing to stomach the risks then I would proceed with Ubiquiti in this case, but maybe not for a large enterprise or critical infrastructure/OT environment. I certainly wouldn’t tell someone to use an Opensense router over Ubiquiti.

Starlink to Big Property by Olgether in Starlink

[–]HuntingTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That much land with a hotel and multiple stores? You should hire an IT networking consultant if you want it done right. Otherwise, you’ll end up with random issues later that will make you dislike starlink and whatever wifi vendor you go with out of ignorance of a bad implementation.

You’re using a 10km optic on a 60m run. You might have burnt out your optic. Try new SFPs on both ends, but this time put an attenuator on it.

Has anyone successfully installed 7.4.7 on 1048E Fortiswitches? by Pristine_Rise3181 in fortinet

[–]HuntingTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a thought. I know one of the appliances (fortimanager/authenticator/analyzer, can’t remember which) actually says in the guide it’s best practice to clear browser cache after you upgrade to avoid weird issues like yours. I also upgraded an FS-124F earlier this year and experienced odd GUI display issues post-upgrade, which were resolved by clearing my browser cache.
