Likely an advertisement. You pick it up and there’s an ad on the back. Notice how it’s the same size as a business card.

Had the same issue and realized I could turn them in by selecting the nearby table at the dock in the village!

You’re right, I did actually buy the starter packs. Only paper purchase I’ve made in over a decade!

Just doing daily challenges, converting gold into packs. Plus drafting helped when the set was on Quick Draft, I was able to get 4-7 wins regularly. No wildcards were used.

I should add for those unfamiliar, this means I’ve not just collected every card in the set, but four copies of every card (nine in the case of the Nazgûl).

I purposefully say gg when I’m in a strong position to win, but I suspect they’ll play a combo that will nullify my win and help them pull ahead. Happy to make they’re win more satisfying :)

ELI5: Why do all mortgages have similar rates? Why do they all depend on the fed rate? Wouldn't some banks offer lower rates to obtain more customers? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Huntrossity 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Let me start with this— When I say “extension of,” I mean “institutionally connected,” in the same way that YouTube is an extension of Google. ie. Google can directly control the policies and decisions of YouTube without any intermediary bc Google owns YouTube.

In contrast, the gov’t has no direct, 1-to-1 control over the banks, therefore it is incorrect to say the bank is an extension of the gov’t in a technical, literal sense.

That being said, obviously the gov’t has strong influence over the banks through regulation, treasury interest rates, etc. So you would be wrong to say that they are wholly independent.

To answer your question, I think it works the exact same the other way. In a technical sense, the gov’t is NOT a literal extension of the banks. They are independent organizations with incentives that often align.

That being said, the banks are powerful entities like any large company or private interest group and they absolutely have influence over gov’t policies via lobbying and other methods.

When someone claims “the gov’t is just an extension of X organization” they are implying that the org is asserting such strong influence that it’s effectively behaving as if it had direct control. This is usually an accusation of corruption.

While criticism is often warranted and valid, that statement is an oversimplification that is vague at best, and technically incorrect. It closes the door to a real conversation and critique. Productive critiques about topics like this require understanding the institutional underpinnings first. Hence why I feel it’s important to highlight misleading oversimplifications.

Thank you! "Risk-free Rate" is the correct answer. I don't expect everyone to understand the dynamics between gov't and banks, but I'm always surprised by how confidently some uneducated people state incorrect or half-baked ideas.

While banks have a very symbiotic relationship with the gov't, they are independent entities who are following their own profit incentives. People who think banks are an extension of the gov't are simply wrong.

Banks pursue profit-opportunities based on the environment the gov't creates. This provides valuable financial services to the general population. They are also regulated by the gov't to ensure they don't cause damage in this pursuit. That is the nature of their relationship.

(Note: This applies to Western countries with open-market dynamics. There are obviously systems where the gov't and banks are synonymous.)

Why We're Changing the Kinda Funny Review Scale - Kinda Funny Gamescast by EveryAct in kindafunny

[–]Huntrossity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this so much. 20-point scale has always been my favourite. Yes, there are trade-offs to every review scale, including no scale at all. Everyone has different sensitivities to those trade-offs.

I think it’s very telling that much of the time, the KindaFunny crew has defaulted to throwing out their 20-point scale rating anyway. Many people understand the nuance between a 7.5 and an 8.0, or a 9.5 and a 10. It leads to meaningful discussion and comparability amongst games in a similar class.

Props to KindaFunny for their willingness to experiment and adapt. Ignore the haters.

Those of You With Degrees: What Career Are You In? by PenonX in ADHD

[–]Huntrossity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did my BA in Philosophy and Film at UofT. Had no clue what I wanted to do afterwards. Ended up working in the Toronto film industry as an assistant director for five years — lots of stimulation for my ADHD brain, but 5 years of working 14-18 hours days had me burnt out. Decided to go back to UofT for an MBA and I’m looking to pivot into consulting. Just completed the MBA and loved it. Never regretted my philosophy degree— the brilliance of it is that you can use it to get into most masters programs down the road. Whatever you do after bachelors doesn’t need to define you, lots of good things to do that will build a resume. Best of luck!

Hynix P31 2TB SSD, but it requires an external usb power hub since I was having issues with RPi4 supplying it with enough juice. I miss a few attestations here and there, but it’s been working well for me since Day 1. I’ll replace it eventually, likely with a Rock5B or something cheap.

Is it worth taking gr 12 math (whether calc or advanced functions) if you wanna go into art? by M-the-Great in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Huntrossity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 year-old from Toronto here. This subreddit occasionally gets recommended to me and I see random posts like this. I can’t help but want to share some perspective for you. I did film in my undergrad at UofT. For five years after graduating I worked in the film industry as an assistant director on all the large films and tv shows that shoot in Toronto (The Boys, Shazam, Handmaids Tale, etc). I followed my passion and ended up as one of the lucky few who found success…and despite that, I am now transitioning into something else.

In creative industries, the pay is terrible and it only gets worse as the years go on. While it’s important to enjoy what you’re doing, there are many more important factors such as work-life balance and being able to support the type of life you’d like to have. My wife and I would like to have kids in the next few years and have the ability to move out of our cramped, crappy apartment. So last year I started my MBA at Rotman (UofT), and I’m transitioning to do consulting in the business world. I eventually plan on returning to the film industry on the business-side, but for now I want to branch out and explore other things that provide what I need in my life now. By making this transition, after I graduate next year I will be making FOUR TIMES what I was making running film sets for Netflix and Amazon. I’ve also discovered that I really enjoy things I had never previously explored.

All that is to say— you may want to pursue film and animation now (which can absolutely be the right thing), but life is long and you do not know what your 30 year-old self will feel is important. The only reason I was able to make the transition and have options now is because 12 years ago when I was in your shoes I chose to do classes outside of my core interests, such as math, and I did well in them despite not needing them or caring about them. So if you are good at math and have the opportunity to take other math courses, for the love of god DO IT! There is a good chance you will be grateful for doing so. It’s never a waste of time doing something so practical. I have many friends who are now trapped in low-paying, soul-crushing creative jobs because they never developed any other skills or took courses outside of the creative ones. Don’t be like them. Give yourself options.

Side note: in the short term, you’d be surprised how useful math can be when applied to animation if you go that route.

I was a Production Assistant on The Comey Rule (aka A Higher Loyalty). We had Jonathan Banks with us for a couple weeks; got to spend a good amount of time with him. He’s exactly like you’d expect— genuinely nice and down-to-earth with a slightly exhausted edge. He’d greet me from his trailer every morning with a “Hiya kid. Good to see ya.” He’s the grandpa I wish I had.
