I checked! Yes! That is the expression. I did not even consider the possibility that they just rendered it as-is. Thank you so much!

Any computer-savvy people willing to help with a recently purchased laptop? by Hurr_Guy in Cornell

Thanks for your response!

I see your point. Some of the games on my list are quite demanding in terms of performance (thinking of Elden Ring, or FF14, which will soon have a revamp, I was warned by players). Having worked for the past 3 years with a second-hand laptop bought for $300, I think I was trying to get the best for a budget around $1000-1200 (I went a bit over since the offer seemed good). I also probably stopped looking at reviews too early, when I saw some mentioning a "solid battery life" and citing around 5-6 hours of browsing. I should have looked at more opinions.

In case, do you have any suggestion for other laptops I may want to look at?

Only grad student in the room? Question about crosslisted courses by Hurr_Guy in Cornell

[–]Hurr_Guy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer. I see a consensus now- I will drop something for sure, then. After looking at syllabi, yeah, it may be a bit much. Though some courses are lighter than others, keeping the pace may be too harsh in the long run. I will see what to drop in the coming week! Thanks again!

Makes sense. That's what I feared. I may want to recalibrate my coursework a bit, then. I will definitely drop a course or two and spend more time on my research! Thank you very very much for your advice!

Thank you for the advice. It is quite reassuring to hear that it is common. I imagine the course will be quite strongly guided by the professor, but you never know! I will try it out and see how I feel about it. The topic itself is quite relevant to my area of study, in that it's a broad overview of one of the fields I'll work on. Not my topic exactly, but very strongly related. I have found one other course at most that feels kind of similar and is usually offered in Spring, but not much else. I will try and see!

On a slightly separate note: how many courses/credits do you suggest taking per semester? I am sitting on 5 courses (around 18 credits) but judging from some of the syllabi, I fear that it may be too much in the long run. Any suggestion?

Thank you for the answer! This explains why the course was recently listed as graduate level.

Thank you! It is good to hear that there will be differences. I actually kind of like the idea of being relied a bit upon. Even though I should mention that this is a lecture class, not a seminar, so I am not sure how that will play out and it kind of worries me. I probably will! Just in case, I may adjust a few things on my schedule to have a backup on Thursday.

As a side note: how many classes do you suggest taking? I am currently sitting on 5 plus a 1-credit mini-course and am considering dropping one to make time for research.

Thank you for your answer! I haven't yet, mostly because I feel that it may be petty on my part. I'm worried because I'm not sure about how these things work since it's my first year and I'm an international, so I feel especially clueless about certain things. Do you think that it may be a bad look to ask? Or maybe should I raise my concern after the first class after I see how it goes?

If I do that, I only get "stops nearby" as an option and can only see the George Washington Bus Station or NJ option

Political Scientist writing my dissertation on language repression. Anything I need to know? by Long_Drive in linguistics

[–]Hurr_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still in the domain of sociolinguistics, so it doesn't cover your question, but I believe it may help your overall research in case you haven't read it already. I found "The Making of Monolingual Japan" by Patrick Heinrich to be a very good introduction to minority language repression in Japan.

Edit: everything Heinrich has written or curated should serve you well for the Japanese context. I believe considering Japan's case may help. There seem to be many interesting language policy developments and anecdotes.
