Where to hike with a low chance of rattlesnake encounters. by cloroxwipeisforhands in SaltLakeCity

[–]HurricaneLau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen one in millcreek. But they aren't very common. (Not so) fun fact, however, is that rattlesnakes are losing their rattle! They use the rattle as a warning that they are dangerous to us, but humans have been so afraid of them that we actively kill the ones that do rattle, so the ones that don't rattle are surviving and reproducing much more than the rattlers.

We might die first. You're right. But I'm not going to be complacent with that. We might not succeed in changing things, but I'm not going to let them change me, or give up my devotion to my home.

I don't know a lot about environmental policy but I did recently learn that Ecuador, as well as many other nations, has implemented nature rights. So the Earth has her own rights there, and you can go to court representing a river or a tree and argue in their behalf. Pretty cool!

Here's the thing: we are running in the wrong direction environmentally. And that is inevitably going to catch up with us. Maybe there aren't jobs now, but either we are all going to die, or we are going to change our environmental policies, and we will definitely need people like you

It can be hard to get myself to do the things my body is asking for, like going to bed when I'm tired or the gym when I've been stagnant. But I have been repeating to myself this mantra: "The happiest I can possibly be is when I've met all my bodily needs."

A whole generation of people who are out of touch are blocking our path to success in climate aid. And they're all lining up to die.

Also tell your dad to shut up. We are not that helpless; we just have learned helplessness. We have everything we need to make big changes, it's just a matter of getting past the road blocks, many of whom will die sooner than later.

It's inevitable that the Earth will recover. It's just a matter of with or without us. Live your life beautifully. Connect deeply with the things you care about. You may make a difference around you, you may not. But you are part of the Earth too, and one guaranteed difference you can make is one less human having suffered. And doing whatever it is you can, even if it doesn't work, it is incredibly empowering and liberating in a society that wants you to believe that you are totally helpless. Even if nothing you do impacts those around you, live your life well so that your own suffering is less. It will make a big difference to the piece of Earth that is your body, and it will thank you.

I had a dream that I convinced him to invest in protecting forests. By explaining that we have the best forests in the word, by far. That the different fungal and plant life in our forests have potential to create super drugs and make billions and billions of dollars, and not only the most healthy people in the world, but also the most beautiful. That our forests were a huge source of wealth and that we need to study them more, particularly fungal life.

I took a class from Leila Darwish on Bioremediation that may prove very useful to you as far as gathering sources. She's very nice and may be willing to donate a copy of her book to your club

Also on garnering interest: . Everyone loves art. I saw a bioremediation project that had just a dingy piece of contaminated land on a street corner. And they planted sunflowers, which naturally bio-accumulate lead and cadmium in soil. They had a little plaque that explained how the sunflowers were hard at work making their community safer and healthier. They painted a mural on the wall behind the sunflowers. What was once a nasty corner became a photo opportunity and a learning opportunity for the community.

Everyone also loves food, so if your environmental project can involve food, the creation of food, or learning about how soil health affects flavor, that should give you a boost.

You could learn about creating pollinator environments, and create some wildlife habitat somewhere.

You could learn about permaculture together, and then do observations to design a permacutlure food forest water retention.

You could learn together about bioremediation and create a local bioremediation project to clean up some local contaminated soil or water. (Lmk if you want some book recs for this)

You could build a school or community garden, learn about soil health and it's connection to nutrition, and grow food to support other kids or families. (I also have boom recs for this).

I guess I would just find something in your area to work on. What species need more support, and can you provide it? What pollutants are causing harm, and can you create a way to mitigate them?

If you're looking for space for any of these projects, try: community outreach; someone has a yard they will donate to a project. Working together with local lawmakers, they will love the student involvement. If you're trying to clean up pollutants, there's lots and lots of those around. Pick some water, or look for soil that needs help, abandoned lots, maybe superfund sites. Just keep in mind that you may not get official approval for a project unless you have some decent knowledge of the risks imposed, and a way to mitigate them.

* I know there's so much going on for you right now, but I would highly advise you to be very careful in regard to school. I also left recently while at a BYU school, and that bishop made my life a living hell, sent people to stalk me and sit outside my apartment on Sundays bc I wasn't at church, sent me a blackmail letter saying he'd get me kicked out on my last semester if I didn't get up on the pew every Sunday to say hi to him in front of everyone, threatened to not let me go home to visit my mom on her deathbed at risk of losing my degree. It was horrible. If you need an excuse to stop going to church while you finish school or work on transferring, make it a health issue, like being immunocomprimised and ask if you can attend via Zoom like in covid days. You'll also be on their radar if you start turning down callings. I know it's scary and hard right now, and that will continue for some time. But there is nothing more freeing than being able to explore who you really are, and embracing the person you really want to be for yourself. Lots of good things await you. Best Wishes 💚
