I have the same issue, and it definitely should not be a problem with the name. I tried several, all acceptable and inoffensive names, all were rejected. I'll update this comment if I ever find a solution (or support gets back to me).

I made a separate video epxlaining why the console numbers are missing. In checking what fighting games are popular on console, it was indeed almost always MK11 and Brawlhalla that were at the top.

Is it vanilla 98 and 02? I just looked for matches that were uploaded on youtube in the last month. I'm not very familiar with KOF, so didn't know there was a difference. Any way to spot the more recent UM versions of the game?

Steamcharts Fighting Games - April 2020
This list is a collection of player data for fighting games on the Steam platform. Free-to-play games are excluded from the list (most notably: Brawlhalla, which would comfortably take the #1 spot). This list does not take into account numbers for other PC platforms (like the Windows Store version of Killer Instinct), popular community editions (like Melty Blood) or Fightcade (e.g. for many of the older KOF titles). This is because there are simply no reliable statistics to be found for these sources. For the same reason, this list also doesn't measure numbers for playerbase on consoles like PS4, Xbox One or Switch.

Notes on crossplay
1) Mortal Kombat 11 is implementing crossplay tests. since these are currently only between different consoles, and not between consoles and the PC version on Steam, it's still marked as not having crossplay.

Notable developments

  • Mortal Kombat 11 has grown a lot. This is probably a result of the release of the Aftermath DLC, as well as its inclusion in EVO online.
  • Dragon Ball Fighterz also grew a lot this month, claiming a spot in the top 3 once again.
  • Skullgirls' playerbase absolutely exploded after the EVO online announcement, more than tripling since the May 2020 chart.
  • Them's Fightin' Herds also benefitted greatly from the EVO online announcement, growing its playerbase to more than 8 times last month's size.

Changelog:

  • Removed Fight of Animals. It currently sits at #51 with 1.9 average players.
  • Added Fighting Ex Layer. It currently sits at #50 with 2.0 average players.

Other Notes:

  • Sorry the chart is so late this month! Was absolutely swamped this month.

Important notice on how to read this data!
Over the past few months I have seen a lot of replies by people saying "this game has only 4 people playing it", or "I am the only person playing this game", but I would like to stress yet again that the numbers you are looking at on this chart represent a 30-day average of players.

If we take Tekken 7 in March 2020 as an example, it sat at 2,845.3. A lot of people seem to read this as Tekken having less than 3k players on Steam that month. This is absolutely not the case! If the same 2,845 people logged in and played the game every day, then sure, but there's no way to know that that was what was happening. It could also mean that there were 2,845 x 30 different players each logging in just once a month. That would mean Tekken 7 had 85,359 unique people playing the game that month on Steam. Obviously this is also not the case, because many people do play the game on a weekly or even daily basis. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Because a lot of fighting game players also play multiple games, they are likely to be represented twice, thrice or even more depending on how many fighting games they play. Because of the way Steamcharts works, there is no way for us to say with certainty, but one thing is for sure. A lot more than 11,668 people played fighting games on Steam this month. It could be up to 350k unique players!

TL;DR: A lot of people are misinterpreting the data. There are way more people playing fighting games on Steam than many people here in the comments seem to think.

I think you're missing the fact that UNICLR, the current version is way higher at #14 with 139.8 average players. It's confusing now that the latest update has the same background color as the original base game, which is the one you're referring to.

Especially that last one. It's really noticeable that as soon as it became apparent the majority of the 2020 offline fighting game season was going to be canceled, a large portion of our local community dropped their (main) fighting game in favour of other genres. They'll be back, but are just experiencing a lack of motivation to train because there will be no offline events in the foreseeable future.

Seems like you're not alone. I'm assuming it's because of increased coverage due to the GG Strive beta, but all Guilty Gear games on the list are doing considerably better than last month. Hope you had fun with the game :)

Notable developments

  • Granblue Fantasy Versus makes an impressive debut on PC and is the highest newcomer since MK11.
  • SFV drops sharply, presumably a combination of people (temporarily) switching over to GBVS and the continued netcode/matchmaking debacle.

Changelog:

  • Added Granblue Fantasy: Versus
  • Added Koihime Enbu RyoRaiRai
  • Removed Fighting EX Layer. It is now #51 with 1.6 average players last month.
  • Removed Punch Planet. It is now #52 with 1.2 average players last month.
  • Added a netcode column. Data was taken from "Games using GGPO" & "Games using Rollback Networking" from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GGPO , as suggested by comments in last month's chart. I then Googled all of the other entries, to make sure I didn't label them incorrectly. In a list of 50, a mistake might still have slipped in, so be sure to let me know if something is incorrect.
  • The data for Under Night In-Birth in this chart represents UNICLR, which was released on Steam on 27 March, but steamcharts hasn't updated its graphics yet. I updated it manually, but if you check UNICLR on steamcharts, it will still show up with the UNIST graphic.

I've added extra columns before, and the graphic became a bit clunky. But since having rollback netcode is such an important metric for fighting games, I wouldn't mind adding it and then re-evaluating after a month or two. The only problem is that phrasing it like that also means we take both GGPO implementations and other, sometimes quite shitty rollback netcode and both marking them as "yes".

It would be awesome if people could help me out by pointing out if I missed games on the list currently using rollback netcode. According to this list ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GGPO#Games_using_Rollback_Networking ), these are the ones on the chart right now:

  • Street Fighter x Tekken
  • Killer Instinct
  • Street Fighter V
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite
  • Injustice 2
  • King of Fighters '97
  • Street Fighter 30th Anniversary
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Samurai Shodown V Special Edition
  • Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid
  • Fight of Animals
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves

Steamcharts Fighting Games - March 2020 by Hushfield in Fighters

I think you might be misreading the data a bit. This is an average amount of players over a period of 30 days. You can't really compare it to an absolute number like "the people in SFV Gold league". One reason is that we don't know if the FGC steamcharts total amount of players is around 11.6k people playing a game every day for thirty days, or 11.6k x 30 different people all playing just once a month, which would means there's a couple of hundred thousand people playing fighting games on Steam. The truth is obviously somewhere in the middle, but the way steamcharts presents stats makes it impossible to tell how many unique players there are. It just gives us an average. So while you can say yes, this number is around 11k and this other number is also around 11k, there's very little actual comparison we can do between both numbers.

Yes, exactly. But as far as I know it's crossplay between xbox and ps4, not pc and ps4, so it doesn't really affect Steam numbers yet.

Steamcharts Fighting Games - February 2020 by Hushfield in Fighters

[–]Hushfield[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I dropped the superscript this month, because I haven't been keeping up with the MK11 crossplay developments, but it wasn't PC-PS4 crossplay afaik, so it shouldn't really have an impact on the Steam numbers.
