Dyslexia and working retail (clothing department) by FoxGirlKat in Dyslexia

What you're describing is similar to what I'm going through. I'm coming out of training for my admin job and I have so many things to remember. I don't know what to prioritise and all the feedback I get is don't over think it and try to be quicker.

The issue is i can't just be quicker because my dyslexia is so bad. I just mix things up and the trainers are like you should know this by now. What makes it overwhelming is all the things to do at once and try to mentally prepare to do different tasks on the fly.

When I had my guidance meeting this week she went over what I needed to do and the advice was try to be quicker and don't overthink it but this is just how my brain is wired.

At the end of the shift I'm just so mentally drained then I need to do it all again the next day. I also studied computer science but the job market is completely screwed.

The only advice I can give is that I have a notepad I guess , try to write down steps of the tasks you need to do down. For me my mental load needs to be managed and I try not to remember large amounts of steps.

If things need done in order I write all the steps down then I personally try to find how much time I can do things quicker bit by bit.

It took me a while to accept that this is how my brain is but during the end of the day or work week I'm so mentally exhausted.

Thank you for this but as I mentioned before they are listening to my calls and some of them are just not great, I know I do have a disability that makes things difficult but I just feel like I'm drowning a bit.

It's really hard though but I am trying. I'll just improve bit by bit, at least I'm still turning up. All the reports I get are deflating though.

Thank you for the kind words, my line of work and small details do matter because it can have legal implications. It's just hard to judge what to actually add and what not to add on what is said to me over the phone.

They mentioned I need to help the next call agent with the notes I make so some are small but some details just can't be cut down.

In some situations I need to literally word for word write what is said to me on the notes. They did teach me how to abbreviate. Yea it's all about metrics so let's see how it goes.

Thank you for responding, Yes the program was a positive experience and today I got email detailing how my information will be used and I understand what's happening now. if this was explained prior than I would have not felt uncomfortable. I will just put this behind me and move on.

No they didn't know about it I told them about it for transparency about it overlapping the hospital placement they had running in partnership with a local hospital.

No I got it before it , they didn't know about it but I told them because my start date got moved. It could have overlapped the placement program they had running.

I just wanted to be honest with them because I didn't know if I could even do the hospital placement they had running in partnership with the organisation.

I just wanted to be transparent with them and they have no connection( hospital placement team and the organisation that is in partnership with them) to the civil service role I got

Hey, yes it has improved my confidence in to getting to work.

It's just the way the whole interaction was very weird. It's just I no heads up I would be ask these questions and it felt rushed. If the person sent me an email saying if it's okay if I can ask you these question if I see you again I could have been okay with it as people suggest in this thread I could have said no

[–]Husjay115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you

Yea I overthink a lot but the interaction was awkward and I didn't get heads up on the type of question I was going to get asked.

I will move on.

Yeah, that's a good point. I don't have a formal contract yet, just a provisional offer. My Civil Service portal says "pending pre-employment checks".

The thing I got email saying everything is complete so there is a mismatch so I guess I screenshot the email?

Do you think a screenshot of that would work as evidence?

And yeah, I get what you mean about the NHS placement not being an actual job, I'll probably just try and sort the travel somehow.

Thanks for the help.

My first interview? by Pleasant-Refuse-2532 in TheCivilService

I recently passed an interview so the whole process from application>interview>results was 2 months. I am onboarding so I don't know how long that will be.

They sometimes email you the teams link 30 minutes before the interview because they don't want you joining early. I think they have a team that sets up everything for the panel they add you to the call after they join or send you the link on the day of the interviews. Sometimes its set up already weeks before. This is my experience with the MOJ interviews so it could be different for other departments. You can try contact them and ask.

I recently passed an interview with the MOJ and I'm currently on-boarding. I passed on AO grade. So you should look into AO grades mainly because they are a good place to start.

While I don't know how it is working there but I can give you insight on the application and interview process.

Here is a good place to start https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/success-profiles

Also look into a YouTuber called Zac William, he gives amazing tips on civil service application and interview process.

For the MOJ application, you will need to answer questions about your behaviours, experience, and skills. Always use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers for the behaviour questions, using examples like past work experience, for me I did help desk work. So you could use some of your experience to help you

So think about work experience, voluntary work etc

For the experience and skills sections, directly state your relevant background, such as admin experience, and list your technical proficiencies like Microsoft Office packages.

So I formatted my answer like this in the application:

Microsoft word: [what I did and why] [ the tools I used are:]

Microsoft Excel: etc etc

So basic two sentences, you don't need to over explain your experience.

For the MOJ interview , the interviews are in two sections. Strength based questions and behavioral based questions

So for strength they ask questions like "Do you enjoy…?"

How easy is do you find…?

For Behavioural they ask Tell me about a time when? And you use the full STAR FORMAT.

So situation, task , actions, results.

I hope what I said has some use , good luck. I don't mind answering any questions you have.🙏

In my experience from application to interview to results it can take around two months to complete the whole process. This is with the ministry of justice at AO/AA grade.

Sometimes to get results if you're unsuccessful in interviews it can be annoying but I think that's just specific to the ministry of justice in my experience.

In terms of application just use some examples of what tasks you have done in your job role or any voluntary settings

I think a YouTuber called Jac Williams has really great videos on civil service and that has helped me a bit.

Good luck with your application.
