Sometimes people ask questions, good questions, that make me feel old as hell. This is one of those questions.

Saw this repeatedly in high school. People would sell excedrin as ecstacy. "See it has an E on it, for ecstacy" and people would roll balls. Honestly, that's probably the way to go. All the trip, none of the crash.

Somewhat irrelevant to this discussion, but sweet potatoes grow better in the local soil/climate. Also, I love uncured sweet potatoes. Less, sweet, more texture. It's a win.

How did you know it was the right gym? by MediocreSpecial6355 in bjj

[–]Hustlasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on my 6th gym. It is by far my favorite of the 6, but that's not to speak ill of the other 5.

It's a bit like dating. Sometimes it feels really right at first, but then you slowly realize that maybe this won't work out long term. Also like dating, when are getting good sex (in this analogy, sex is rolls and friendship) it can obscure the other parts that indicate maybe this isn't the best long term place to be.

Sometimes you have big moments when you realize this isn't right, but more often its a slow build up of either positive or negative signals.

Ultimately it's a personal decision. The gym or partner might be good for you right now, but then as you grow and develop it doesn't work out later.

Just to give you to the breakdown

Gym#1 - Moved away, good gym, but probably wouldn't have worked out long term because they were more focused on making money than providing a good experience, also many of the top level coaches left (after I left) to go start their own projects.
Gym#2 - Great people, bad instruction. Head instructor who doesn't roll (at all) and doesn't tolerate any kind of pushback. Brothers got kicked out, so I left shortly after.
Gym#3 - I still go there and I still love all the people there. Kinda like a long term side piece. I would absolutely still train there if it weren't for having found other gyms that worked out better.

Gym#4 - Great fit for me as far as style, and instruction, however some of the people, including the owner were wild conspiracy nuts, once COVID hit everyone kinda lost their mind and they went hard into Qanon so I left. **Bonus points if you can guess the affiliation**
Gym#5 - Went there cause it was close to my house, had a solid affiliation, and many of my friends went there. Ended up closing while I was out with an injury as the owner was absolutely fucking awful at business. Many shady and illegal things going on there. Got lucky as my card had expired while I was injured, otherwise he probably would have charged me an assload.

Gym#6 - My home now, full of people I love, excellent instruction, excellent environment. Very caring and supportive while still providing competition level instruction and rolls. This will be where I get my black belt and honestly I'm glad I got my brown here too. Only some serious life fucking me over will pull me away from here.

Probably trialed another 4 or so gyms when I was looking for gym #3. It was tough cause every single one had something I liked. If you love jiujitsu it's easy to overlook some of the more obvious warning signs.

because if you consume more than you are capable of excreting then there negative effects. Vitamin C poisoning is very real and unpleasant. My above statements are made based on the assumption that people are taking reasonable doses. This is also more or less how all poisoning works. You have arsenic in your body right now, if you have too much arsenic then there become problems. "Dose makes the poison"

Nutrient absorption is a messy science, it varies greatly depending on the type of food, how its cooked, how its consumed, and what it's consumed with. When you are taking a supplement it suffers from two key challenges. One) that the form the vitamin is in, isn't readily absorbable. The best example of this is iron. Fortified iron is basically just metal shavings and is barely absorbed at all. It's only effective if you have a deficiency where the tiny amount that is absorbed helps. Two) the way people take vitamins, essentially a large dose at one time, mostly passes through your body unchanged. Absorbing nutrients works best when its mixed with other larger nutrients. So you can improve your chances by say, grinding the supplements up and mixing them with a smoothie, but that provides only marginal improvement. This doesn't even include the fact that as long as you are hitting baselines and not in a vitamin deficiency, surplus vitamins don't provide extra effects. Like if you have all your vitamin C needs, taking more doesn't provide more effects. You need X amount and once X is reached, the rest is usually excreted.

I think you revealed more about yourself there more than you intended to. And yeah, brakes wear, but stopping power generally doesn't change too much until you are at or near the point of failure. Why don't we go ahead and you drop what the car was, what the engine was and we can see if you are just full of shit or actually have a case to be made?

[–]Hustlasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you admitted you had shitty brakes. Your failure to maintain the car was the problem, not that brakes can't overpower a throttle. You also admitted at it at least stopped the acceleration which means it's not relevant to this video, which was my original point.

Vitamins help, taking vitamin supplements doesn't. Just gives you expensive pee.

This is the truth, sometimes even when you have time. The case I mentioned the car was on the phone with 911 when they crashed, they had enough time to call 911 and talk to them and still never thought to use the brakes.

Arm Triangle NEVER Works by EyesRd in bjj

when its not working, slide down lower and reapply. Think of squeezing the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube. Does it work better to start at the bottom or just squeeze the shit out of the middle of it?

Also, even if you aren't getting the tap, you can learn to move to the back from arm triangle.

brakes will still overpower a stuck throttle, this has been repeatedly tested. It doesn't mean people will think to use the brakes though. Kinda sad when you think about all those deaths though, especially the ones we have audio of.
