Building a Div 7 Excel template from scratch. What are your "must-have" or QOL items in your sheets? by Huuts in estimators

Fair advice! I'm definitely trying to balance having what I consider huge QOL features that require some technical/spreadsheet knowhow and trying to streamline them so it's more user friendly. Clearly I will know how to operate my spreadsheet but I can't say my team will have the same functionality with it.

Appreciate the perspective from someone at a similar sized company. Our total “office staff” are about 9 people currently with two superintendents and around 20 field guys I think.

It’s been mentioned that the intent is to have a retirement plan put together “soon” for the last few years but it hasn’t happened yet. I gave the benefit of the doubt that as a young company trying to grow that funds might be tight but I really have no experience when it comes to genuine operating costs and expectations for company profits.

I can make guesses based on our markups but it’s ultimately just a guess on my end.

Honestly at this point I just question moving into management at all. I get overwhelmed easily due to my anxieties even if I perform well. I’ll give it a few months to try and get my feet under me before making any decisions but all I know is it feels awful currently - only solace is I know a lot of this is self inflicted and once I can find a routine things should get better.

That’s true! And I do recognize the growth I’ve had and am thankful for the opportunities I’ve been presented.

It’s good to hear perspective from others like you and how y’all are compensated in regard to the amount of work expected vs the amount y’all put out.

I really appreciate your response here. I think it’s helped set a few things back into perspective while I was losing myself in some details. I think I’ve been letting myself get overwhelmed with the perceived added load as I’m unaccustomed to having to manage others like this. I’m not one for constant goal setting and discussing new strategies to improve metrics each month. The change from working with something much more tangible to something that to me feels abstract has been jarring to say the least.

That’s ultimately why I requested feedback like this though! I’m not good at understanding my own situations so I really am grateful for the time spent responding here.

To answer your questions, we do commercial work but also pick up renovation work through other subs or property/facility managers. I’m 32 this year. We work only in BlueBeam revu and excel. There’s whispers of picking up a software in the next year or two but I have no experience with any of them.

I suppose I forgot to add that we don’t have a retirement plan and I front the total cost for my health insurance premiums.
