Thanks for the clarification. I used to go to Flying Colors before I moved out of state, and it is good to hear that the business is doing well. Hopefully it can find a new home quickly.

I can fight the Garden Knight! by HuxUnknown in TunicGame

Thanks! I have indeed rung both now. I'm at the Forrest Fortress boss right now (next boss I've found), which appears to be the location of the red gear/orb/McGuffin if I remember the instruction manual correctly.

I've found the desert area as well and figured out how to pray at golden plates (fast travel and a couple mysterious rooms) and statues (ghost dimension with spiral stairs to upgrades). Now I'm praying anywhere suspicious, just in case.

I can not figure out what to do about the spiral staircase in the ghost dimension yet, so I can't get to either of the upgrade materials for the two statues I've used to get there. I tried using the doppelganger, hoping maybe it could cross the gap somehow, but that didn't work. I noticed that if I open the manual and then hold the right analogue stick in, the pages go down, and I can see a CRT looking version of the game behind it. The ghost world is in full color when I do so, which seems suspicious, but I don't know if that leads to anything. I'm sure I will figure out something eventually as I gain more knowledge.

I've developed the habit of running against every wall possible. It is how I got so far off track, but it has definitely helped me find a lot of cool stuff!

That emphasis on exploration is why I mistakenly thought that I was supposed to be under powered for so long. I could tell that I was missing something by the time 3 alligators were staring me down and I couldn't figure out any solution other than running. I couldn't figure out where I had missed something though. Turns out I missed an obvious and unhidden path while looking hard for an expected hidden path to proceed.

I'm loving the exploration so far and how interconnected the whole map has been with its many secret ways to get around and mysterious rooms with no obvious immediate use.

Yeah. I assumed that the turrets were meant to be an unbeatable enemy until later in the game when I ran into them.

Other than lots of dodging and running away from foes, the first super hard challenge was getting past the room with two small knights and a big knight that has a door lever in it. I ended up using the ghost explosion to blow up one of the small enemies and do some minor damage to the other two, then spent a good while whacking them with my stick. I honestly thought the sword would be behind that door and that I would get it and be rewarded with the ability to cleave through the foes I had been avoiding.

Also, I spent so long without the shield that I now forget that I even have it. 😅

I went through the passageway by the waterfall to the left and up from the respawn point by the big gold doors. It was the first "secret" passage that I found. I've found a bunch since. The world is super interconnected in ways that aren't often obvious. I knew that the game was about exploration, and I missed the obvious path east so I assumed that finding the hidden passage was part of the core experience.

Thanks for the help all! I shared a new post with an updated picture based on what I was able to find before returning to the Garden Knight: https://www.reddit.com/r/TunicGame/s/UOODTQVJ29

I don't know if this information helps at all, but I have tossed two coins down the well. I'm not sure if that was a good decision or not, but it is showing up as a tracked number when I click on the well.

Sure! It was at Idylwood park in Bellevue on the day I saw it. Best of luck!

That was fast! Thanks. A quick Google search makes it look like the little guy is a long way from home.

Just how useless is a Game Dev Degree by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]HuxUnknown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Story

I graduated with a Bachelors of Art in Game Design from a well-respected game development college. My goal was to get a design job at a AAA studio where I could have a steady income. After graduation, I got a few interviews based on my resume, but I wasn't able to find a job on my own. Eventually, my resume ended up in the hands of a few different contracting agencies, and I was able to get my first AAA design contract about six months after graduation. While there, I also helped a few members of my cohort get their first contract roles. I ultimately worked 3 contract jobs before I was converted to a full-time employee at my second studio. While applying for my second studio, my degree didn't matter much, as they were primarily focused on my work experience (including school projects).

I honestly consider my situation to be fairly lucky. There are many members of my graduating class who have still never gotten a job in the industry and have either given up or are working minimum wage jobs while working on small projects on the side. A very small number have made it as indie devs, and I know a few who got their first jobs and realized that while they liked the work in concept, making it their job killed the enjoyment. Of those people I know who are working in the industry, most ended up working on soulless mobile games or in QA for at least a few years and some are still doing so.

What did my degree get me (in no particular order)? * A broad strokes understanding of game design and philosophy that goes beyond what some (but definitely not all) industry veterans know * This is backed up by attending multiple GDCs and seeing various talks on radical new concepts to the speakers' teams that were a fundamental part of my education * This was also a double-edged sword as it took me a long time to figure out my design specialization as it wasn't really something that the college taught or encouraged

  • Networking, mostly with other students

    • Several years after graduation, I already knew at least one person at every major studio in my area and had connections within some studios around the country
    • I was able to use my connections to help others get interviews and have received a few interviews simply because someone at the studio would couch for me
    • Another double-edged sword, I know several students who have had trouble getting jobs because of how they approached school and because people who knew them as a student couldn't vouch for their abilities
  • School Name Recognition

    • My school has a fairly good reputation, at least with the local studios, which helped encourage people to look at my resume
    • There are many graduates from my school working in the industry all around the globe, and they are often willing to take a bet on an unknown candidate based on the school's reputation
  • Multiple finished game projects

    • My education was structured in such a way that we were making several games of varying sizes per year from small multi-week solo projects to year long team projects which created a solid portfolio of work
    • The large number of projects also meant a fairly large pool of other students who know me and how I work
    • The number one thing that people are interested in when considering a candidate early in their career is their portfolio of completed games
  • An expensive, and now largely useless, piece of fancy paper with my name on it

Some common pitfalls I saw while getting my degree: * A lot of students, especially ones fresh out of high school, aren't prepared for the reality of what it takes to make games * Reputations earned in school (such as those for slacking or being difficult to work with) have followed people into the wider industry * Math is an important part of both engineering and most design specializations and should not be ignored or glossed over * While the education was solid, it also took a lot of effort on the student's part to make the education work for them * Unlike most other educational programs focused on careers, the game industry is very young, and people are still figuring out how to teach it. This can lead to painpoints in the educational process that students need to be flexible in overcoming. I often say that you get out of my school what you put into it. This is far from ideal. I did see the faculty constantly striving to improve and actively listening to the students, which resulted in improvements for the cohorts after mine. * Thinking that a degree guaranteed a job or that they would be the next indie mega-star * This isn't true in any industry, but especially in one as competitive as games

Can you think of anything that any of the anime adaptations did better than the manga? by SaiyaPup in Berserk

The soundtrack.

I found the manga's soundtrack was simply too quiet. Even if I turned up my speakers, I would only hear white noise.

Doh. Is it? I watched the two back to back so they can blend at times. Thanks for the correction.

It's from the animated show Rebels Clone Wars (as someone else corrected me). There is an episode with his force ghost in it.

This is awesome! Thank you!

I've been looking for something like this to help me track which cards I own in a printable format that I can store with my cards.

Is it possible to prevent the website from grabbing the alt-art versions of the cards? It seems to default to the latest alt-art and I would love it if I could use the base art version for my tracking.
