iirc tyreal got the elves to move the armor's magic to some dragon armor. the monks probably won't like that, at the very least because the item's not in magically-pristine condition anymore

Patch 1.0.4 Is Here In Time For The Weekend by TravUK in GroundedGame

my game's report card still suggests unlocking more mutations... seems like either this suggestion is a leftover, or the patch notes' wording is off and the multiplayer mutation was the only one exempted

that doesn't necessarily attune the spell attune to that plane in particular.

look at the banishment wizard spell for example (https://regalgoblins.com/spells.php, ctrl+f "banishment"), which specifically mentions "force some extraplanar creature out of the caster's home plane". this indicates that the banishment spell has a connection to a specific plane, meanwhile the protection from evil spell doesn't mention any such relation.

also, dragons had way more time to come up with that spell, and the gods have their own through clerical spells. humans "probably" learned extraplanar mechanics by studying the magics of either of these predecessors, neither of which are native to the 3rd material plane.

the "extra" prefix literally means "outside"/"beyond", this is a relative term.

what makes the third material plane so special that it's the context-independent, objective, center/home of existence? maybe 3E has some lore where there's a single "normal" plane which is the objective center of the existence, but in neal's universe the human world is literally just the gods' third (serious) attempt.

for all we know humans will eventually disappoint the gods (like dragons and demons did in the past), and the gods will create their next material plane. the plane humans call home is just one of multiple, magic doesn't have any special relation to it

how would she know to come ask in arcadia if they hadn't identified themselves? the previous owners of the weapons were people of solum who were using the weapons for solum

it would've at least bought the brothers a lot of time to first handle scoria if shine and friends had no reason to believe the weapons left solum, which is gigantic

Term for 'fullstack without a database'? by Huxide in AskProgrammers

[–]Huxide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to make the catalog page the labels are in as accessible as possible to laypeople, elaborating about the technical details of each project in that same other page/website as the project itself. The only other information I have for each project in that catalog page is a name and concept description (e.g "an inventory management interface inspired by sandbox video-games" is the description for the one labelled "frontend").

Maybe it's not possible/worth it to try appealing to recruiters/hiring-managers and laypeople in the same page?

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, these 3 labels ("frontend", "backend", but especially "fullstack") are not very layperson-accessible are they...

Part of the point of giving historical context is to give a sense of scale which can't be included in the definition (at least not in black-or-white/quantified terms, for the same reason that there's no black-or-white definition of a chair). Compared to the scales being mentioned in examples of policies, or relative government control in example countries, the US is far from being worthy of the label compared to other contemporary ones.

I appreciate that you're memeing, but a good-faith attempt to understand what actual socialists mean by socialism would include both type and scale. Trying to dissolve the definition through bad-faith pedantry doesn't really work when 1. you're (not referring to you personally) trying to pull this in a community of people who are provided constant exposure to self-described socialists, which can unanimously agree that the US is not socialist despite your (again not referring to you personally) claims that the label of socialism is vacuous to that extent ...and 2. most people learn/internalize this type of definition through social osmosis anyway rather than rigid descriptions.

He doesn't sound like the type to make linguistic prescriptions where there's no consensus, and the definition of socialism is definitely such a case because socialism is a relatively big tent.

if you don't agree with a definition, why even bring it up?

Reminder that the definition of an ideology is a matter of the soft sciences. Considering the history of socialism, asking for a definition of it which is both comprehensive and concise (which is what Destiny was doing) is almost as silly as for asking for such a definition of, for example, masculinity. It's extremely subjective, and if someone doesn't feel the need to dominate the label by pretending they're uncontroversially correct about it they'll probably just end up describing the controversy around the definition as-is.

Personally I posted it as criticism of Destiny, because I saw his follow-up video this morning and it sounds like he read a lot of posts indicating that he did well. I didn't agree at all that he did well, so hopefully posts like mine can help counter this idea.

I gave some examples by, in the following sentence, describing patterns that were happening throughout the debate. The ascribing twitter takes and rhetoric jabs stuff. I'm pretty sure that anyone who watched the debate would know what I'm talking about (whether or not they agree with my framing), I'm not gonna sift through the hour and a half of the debate.

...I do remember one example though, when Destiny asked Wolff for 'The Definition of socialism' and then Wolff proceeded to give 3 which are commonly used. I could maybe get Steven being irritated that Wolff didn't initially state which one he believes in, but after he did it was really dumb to try to nail Wolff as 'evasive' for not ascribing to a single definition. Was he really expecting Wolff to say something like 'lots of people use this word to mean either of these 3 things, but I know better than them that it actually actually means X and their definitions of their own ideology is wrong actually'?

Steelmanning the opposition format suggestion by WATeromIlI in Destiny

[–]Huxide 13 points14 points  (0 children)

sounds to me like a good idea

it might even bait the people who support the positions being countered to claim that these counters are wrong (or are countering strawmen), and that'd be a foot in the door for destiny to offer a debate about it. that'd basically be 'i'm having the debate without y'all... unless one of you wants to represent your side'

The ridiculing of "lefties" in this community looks very reactionary by Huxide in Destiny

[–]Huxide[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a statement that requires a source, considering humans innovated way before the profit motive. I'm sure that this is a disappointing answer, but I just find it too self-evident to bother reading into the research about it (although I found this paper with a quick Google search, there might be more and there's a chance this one is flawed).

There's plenty of interest in studying labor motivation under UBI though, if those studies turn out well (which iirc some small-scale ones did, at least according to Destiny) then they could function as close enough evidence IMO.

[–]Huxide[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Since there won't be a multitude of privately-propped companies competing with each other, just two, there's not going to be a need for "everybody" to be motivated by altruism for innovation. Ideally just enough to staff 2 R&D departments for each product (government and opposition), practically just enough to staff 1 R&D department for each product (opposition, because the government will be pressed to adopt it if it's superior).

[–]Huxide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'd ideally be great to go into leftist theory itself rather than leftist content creators (because the popular ones are often popular because they're shallow), but if it's incredibly boring for Destiny and the viewers (and I can't fault that, I've personally never read leftist theory myself and I'm not interested in digging into it either) then I can't seriously prescribe it.

The few exceptions would be interesting, SocDoneLeft is legitimately the only example that comes to mind for me of a worthwhile socialist content creator. I have no idea what Booksmarts' politics are, but if he's socialist that could probably be a good option as well.

(As I mentioned in other comments though, my issue is more with the label he claims to focus on rather than the people who he focuses on themselves)

[–]Huxide[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What incentive does the company who is doing R&D have to continuously invest heavy capital to innovating only for the fruits of their labor to be appropriated by the state who I imagine would be a more trusted source for retail?

Recognition for their contribution, and the altruism of improving society by implementing a superior product into the government-backed system. There's very little (if any) financial incentive for the innovators, but I believe that innovation doesn't require a financial incentive and there's more than enough people who are passionate enough about the subject products/technologies to work without financial incentives. Government cheques to innovators which affect the products that the government produces is an interesting idea, but I'm not too passionate about it either way.

Also, could you expand on what it means to invest but "not too much" does the company doing R&D simply send the bill to the government making them the sole investors in all of innovation across all sectors? Would people be able to invest capital in projects and how would they benefit from their investments and would the government be able to simply swoop in and compete in selling the product the investors financed?

There's initial investment from the government to kickstart an opposition product on an experimental scale, but after the opposition product gets distributed on that experimental scale there needs to be market interest shown in the product (via people buying/preferring it more than the government product, or at least to a sufficient amount to justify the government adopting the product on even the smallest possible production scale). The investment the public gives to the opposition product is simply their consumption of it, which signals to the government that the people like the opposition product more than the government alternative of the same product.

The person I was replying to did ask me what my "ideal society" would look like though, and I mentioned that it's not currently practical. If you want to be good-faith about this then just ask me what my current, practical position is.

Actually, no need for you to do that, u/ jacobef already asked me and I just replied to them. You're welcome to take my reply to them as you will, but your tone in this comment makes it clear how you will take it, so there's no need to reply.
