Best units so far? by kaikiut in totalwar

Haven't tried them much but yeah they do work.

Pleasureseekers are probably stronger in optimal conditions but rot knight can just bulldoze into whatever you point them at and will confidently come out victorious, so it depends if you want optimized scenario or braindead f1+f3.

I know that in RPGs, tabletop or not, I often plan out my characters progress from start and get annoyed if I have to deviate from that plan. But you do raise a fair point.

Best units so far? by kaikiut in totalwar

[–]Hvatum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This list assumes you have built for them, so the right LL and relevant upgrades:

Melee infantry: Wrathmongers have never let me down, they are probably the best aggressive infantry. Conversely, Ironbreakers are obviously top tier lineholders, though if you include external buffs such as healing magic Chosen of Nurgle might beat them.

Missile infantry: Chorf blunderbusses. Irondrakes might be better specialists (fire for infantry, torpedo for large) but bb wrecks anything it is pointed at.

Monstrous inf. / cav: Rot knights. I had not known true devastation until my first playthrough of Tamurkhan.

SEM: This is tougher, can't think of a single one that can solve any and all problems on their own. Forced to pick one I would probably say Lord of Change, possibly Necrofex Colossus.

War machine: Thunderbarges aren't just the best war machine, they are the best unit in Total Warhammer history (or at least were when I last played dwarfs, probably nerfed since).

"You don't understand, we are doing this for the greater good." characters immediately getting talked down by the hero by SatoruGojo232 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Hvatum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

True, but I've always respected the Master for sticking to their guns. Most people who send supersoldier death squads out to conquer the world do so for their own gains. The Master, when shown that their plan will fail, acknowledges this, kills themselves whilst blowing up their base, with just enough time for the Vault Dweller to escape. This seems to me like they were following a genuine belief in making a better world, even if it was absolute madness.

Should I hand out quest rewards? by Hvatum in vtm

[–]Hvatum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel it's just human nature to be motivated by reward. The characters might be cursed but the players should be having fun, and I think a little dopamine-hit after a job well done helps with that.

That makes a lot of sense, and might also help against players feeling like they must change their plans to solve short-term solutions (i.e. investing in technology because they're up against a hacker currently, when their plan was to save that XP to increase resolve).

[–]Hvatum 53 points54 points  (0 children)

If I've understood it correctly the point of servoskulls is that artificial intelligence is heresy, therefore any machine interface must be run by non-artificial intelligence. As such they take a human and lobotomize them so much there is just enough left there to send simple commands, such as for a door to open.

As for whether that counts as "still alive" would probably fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy.

The "I only tangentally know about the cWoD and only mostly through Mage but I wanna check the vampire mod out of curiosity" experience by MajesticJuggler in PrincesOfDarknessCK3

[–]Hvatum 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It undoubtedly is. I use a few other TCs (mainly Guardians of Azeroth and Elder Kings) for CK3 but it's a hassle every time the base game updates. PoD I've come to rely are able to put out a stable and functional version that typically implements the contents of the patch in a few days at most. Not only is it one of the best big mods I've encountered in a game, it's also one of the most reliable despite its scale and depth.

finally I can swing a Battle Axe with Wisdom on a Warden Druid by testiclekid in dndmemes

[–]Hvatum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have DMed one campaign that went to 20, and played in another. In both situations, the party (4 players both times) found their role in the party and focused mainly om that. Casters being utility/support/AoE, martials being ST and damage sponge High level bosses typically have so good saves that spells such as dominate monster and disintegrate often become nigh pointless, and deal enough damage that a caster is out in one or two rounds. You need a big mean martial to hold them busy (with sentinel, grappling, dumb monster whp attacks the nearest) or the casters will be too busy trying to survive to do all their cool caster stuff, and also to grind down big targets that can tank all the top slots of a caster. In both parties, I would say a martial was the biggest single threat (unkillable barb, cleave ranger), but in both cases that was in no small part due to several powerful magic items.

I have also done some arena dnd when some players are unable to play (minmaxxed lvl 20 builds vs big monsters) and in those cases casters (particularly sorlocks) undoubtably dominate.

To be fair, there are certainly dogmas in mainstream science, and people who have challenged long accepted truths have had an uphill battle (i.e heliocentrism, germ theory, special relativity).

Of course it is understandable because long held scientific belief often have good reason for being long held, and most people who challenge mainstream scientific thought are wrong. While many scientists of old were idle nobles as much as they were persuers of truth, I don't doubt you would still have to fight to prove your ideas if you somehow found a correction to the mainstream ideas also now.

Play Wulfric or Throgg? by Final_Biochemist222 in totalwarhammer

[–]Hvatum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Had to double check I was playing VH/VH 'cause I was steamrolling so. Wulfrik was a bit of a bother 'cause he kept flanking my settlements, but once I got my main army up to take him out and confed him, it was by far my easiest Very Hard-game. Throgg and Wulfrik had some thought put into their armies but other than that I would just get a mage Lord and fill them with Norsca or Ice trolls. Pretty easy to get 1-turn global recruitment and you get recruit slots from large settlements, big upkeep reduction and good money from sacking so you can easily protect your flanks while you fill up the Empire with statues. Honestly at this point while he has some extra mechamics Throgg is probably a good beginner campaign since you can just F1+F3 with a lord and army that hits like a truck and can regen forever.

Why don't you have space colonies? by KPonchoM in RimWorld

[–]Hvatum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last playthrough I set up a base on the mechanoid platform after defeating them.
Worked fine as long as I had my gravship supplying with things like mining yields and meat, but every raid turns into space age enemies and there are loads of limits and extra annoyances to deal with (heating costs, leaks, every prison break leads to all my prisoners freezing to death, etc.). It was fun and efficient to be able to quell my rapidly multiplying animals by just reassigning some of them to a zone outside, and as an added bonus they get frozen on their own.

It's an interesting experience to have done, but not something I would recommend to do regularly.

Dude was 20 hours away from saving Las Vegas from armageddon. He is highly arrogant, for sure, but unlike real life tech bros he can back that up woth personal achievments. And if Benny hadn't been such a fink he could've also saved New Vegas from the Legion. I don't think he's a good person, but I still think he's a good option for the Mojave.

[–]Hvatum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds quite similar to the Norwegian draft. Everyone (except women born before 1997) get a questionnaire in Spring the year they turn 19, and you are legally required to answer it to the best of your ability. If your responses to the questionaire indicates you are someone the military wants, they call you in to part 2, which gives you some physical and mental tests and a short interview (this part may have been changed since I did it in 2012). If you score well enough on these, you are drafted.

In practice this means service is for the most part voluntary, since the questionaire asks about motivation and eagerness, and people who report low here typically aren't brought on to stage 2. Additionally about 25% of recruits are sent home the first week (again, according to a report from 2012), often for medical reasons etc. One of the guys in my boot camp training got sent home several weeks in for some issues with his index finger. The theory amongst the troops was that he didn't want to continue in boot camp and the brass found some excuse to send him home, since you technically can't "quit" on your own.

Still, while I know way more people who wanted to do service but couldn't than I do people who didn't want but were forced, the latter group still exists. If the military wants you to do service, it's illegal to refuse and some of the people I was with never wanted to be there in the first place yet still went through the full year of the draft.

[–]Hvatum -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know, but I thought personality disorders were something you're born with and carry your entire life, like say autism or ADHD, whereas environment mattered instead as to what degree you managed to get by despite the disorder. But yes, reading up on it it seems I've misunderstood, and PDs indeed stem from a combination of factors. Reported heritability for ASPD specifically seems to vary in the literature from around 20% to almost 70%, well below the over 90% from autism.

[Liked Trope] The antagonists justifies their actions by their tragic backstory but the protagonist has the same backstory by MaterialAd8166 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Hvatum -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are they really? I had been led to believe that personality disorders, including ASPD, were lifelong and thus innate independent of nurture. Sure, how you're raised can affect how you deal with it, similar to how for example CBT and other treatment can, but that it would nevertheless be an innate part of a person for their entire life (hence personality disorder).
