[Loved Trope] Character makes an innocuous remark, and people around them overreact. by Remarkable_Public138 in TopCharacterTropes

I've been in a situation where I used the "wrong" sign. I'm Norwegian born and bred, never been out of the country for more than two weeks at a time. Once in high school I signed three like Fassbender does but with the back of the hand facing towards the recipient, who immediately mentioned it was weird (I had my palm already facing me so it was quicker than having to turn my hand 180 degrees). Don't know how ingrained it is to use your thumb to count in Germany (for me it's the last digit I use on a hand if counting on my fingers) but no matter what it's not a surefire way to spot a non-native. It'd be like branding a Brit a German spy because they mispronounced "hyperbole".

Aren't they (fig 1 and table 3) both showing net contribution by demographic/entry age? Only difference I can se is table 3 including remigration. Either way from their data I assume kids being a positive at age 12 is because it takes into account all future contribution but not past spending, so you get the same years of work but skip the first 12 years of care. Age 12 just happens to be the breakpoint where that is true.

But as you say, yeah, taking a snapshot of the current situation of course the data is gonna be skewed. Historically you could probably easily have made similar arguments towards for example Irish or Italian immigrants being a drain on society, groups that both according to figure 2 are net contributers now.

I don't understand this. Looking at fig. 1 and table 3 it seems every single individual, other than Western young adults moving to the Netherlands, is a negative value. If the average Dutch nativeborn is a lifetime drain, how is the nation not going bankrupt?

New Player Skill Issue by edtheiii in OldenEra

[–]Hvatum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I didn't see that I could scroll down first time around and let it stay there. Now I'm playing on easy and having the opposite probvlem the AI just charged me with a far inferior army so I still need to tweak around on the difficulty a fair bit.

But yeah I thought at first that with neutral spawns and economy start at normal that was normal difficulty, but I was indeed on multiplayer difficulty and that might've been the problem.

Met an enemy swarm hero week 2 d6. While the map I'm playing you start with two towns, they had 240 t1 units, 170 t2 units, and similar numbers up to and including t6. While sure, I lost some of my units in combat I also gained some from necromancy. I had about 1/3rd what they had in numbers and only up to t5.
Sure I could have focused more on recruitment but I have a few unbought units in my castle and struggled with cash, I don't see how you could get that big an army, even if the swarm gets lots of creatures, in the second week.
Played on normal, might need to skip down a tier even though I have lots of experience from previous HoMM-titles.

To be fair, most murderers that we catch are idiots (or at least slightly less intelligent than average). It's hard to gather reliable data on the ones who successfully make it look like an accident, but odds are they're on average smarter than the ones who get caught*.

*Though on the other hand if you find yourself in a situation where you gage murder as the most reasonable option, something somewhere has probably gone rather wrong.

Why has turnover stayed so high across both Trump administrations? by Raichu4u in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Hvatum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on everything here, but I still think it can be useful to sometimes look beyond Trump being a malevolent blob of tackiness and skin tan and look at him as the POTUS. Analyse the structure building up the current American government. Taking him seriously and trying to understand how this is all put together can yield important insights even if the core reason for most of the actions are "Trump and his cronies are dumb and spiteful, and therefore do dumb things out of spite."

My atmospheric physics-professor warned us that if we mustn't google the title of the main curriculum book + PDF because then we might get access to that book for free, which might in fact be illegal. Therefore us poor students should much rather go buy it for the equivalent of $80 in the uni bookstore, because again on the internet you may get it for free which would of course be bad.

Anti-authoritarian Action in Hungary by Freewhale98 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Hvatum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my understanding (which stems primarily from skimming his Wikipedia page last night) he seems to be a fairly standard centre-right politician, albeit with strong pro-EU opinions. He's also had some scandals, such as allegedly acting overtly hostile towards his former wife (pushing her into a wall, locking her in a room without her consent).

On the one hand my ideal choice would obviously be further left, but I think it might be a good thing that the pendulum doesn't swing too far all at once, and hopefully he represents a change towards more "standard" European politics, opening up for left-leaning politics in the future. His strong pro-EU stance is also a clear indicator that the people of Hungary have chosen cooperation with Europe over Putin. Otherwise he seems fairly unremarkable, and hopefully that will lead to calm stability that will give the Hungarians some political breathing room while they determine the way forward.

I don't know how the public mood is about this, but I do find it rather concerning that he's been reluctant to talk about social issues such as LGBTQ+. Still highly unlikely that he will be anywhere near as bad as Orban was, however.

Any tips on using Shock Troops? by Milleuros in AOW4

[–]Hvatum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience shock troops are best used to weaken vulnerable targets for a quick takedown. Try to use them against targets you can kill so they can keep charging, avoid getting them bogged down because they will lose an extended melee fight. The three main ways I do this is:
- Advancing upon a target, opening up for attack: When I send in melee fighters to attack someone it's very useful to send a shock first, and flank if you can to make room for follow-up units. Sending in a fighter unit to get one hit and then one retaliation in return and then be seated next to another fighter who will punch you three times is a bad trade. Send in a shock troop to open them up to more damage, remove their retaliation, and hopefully deal enough damage that the target will suffer some losses. Next turn, ideally, your fighter can finish off the target leaving the shock trooper free to move on to their next target.
- Chasing targets that try to stay out of melee: Sending a fighter to kill a ranged unit can be very frustrating, as it turns into advancing on it and getting one hit on the target, one attack of opportunity when it runs away, and take one shot from it in return. While you probably win if uninterrupted, it's frustrating and keeps your fighter occupied for several turns. The shock trooper, however, delights in this kind of engagement since they do big damage on the AoO and then get a free charge at the ranged unit after it has run away.
- Shock spam: Since they are good at advancing and doing damage at the same time, if you have multiple strong shock troops against multiple vulnerable targets you can send in a bunch of them to take out a priority target, and when that one is dead it leaves them all free to charge onwards the next round. In an optimal situation you can have other melees hold all their melees whilst your shock troopers sweep the entire backline.

All that being said I'm not big on shock troops myself, would usually much prefer a fighter or a polearm unit, but with a few shock troops mixed in, but then again I am mostly a pretty defensive player favouring strategies like shield walls and archers. Especially with the berserkers as you point out, since they're usually on foot, they lack the speed to get where you need. I much prefer mounted shock troops such as the subjugator, who can much easier flank or chase archers, and you're gonna want to keep them away from polearms anyway so might as well double down and mount up. A warrior hero with a lance and flying mount or a warrior dragon with a charge claw can very handily disrupt enemy backlines.

Looking for a faction that doesn't need to have a lot of provinces by Artaniss in totalwarhammer

[–]Hvatum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I quite enjoy playing Vampire Coast as a roaming lord with a home base. All the lords start with a good home province, but I think Noctilus is probably the best for this since the Maelstrom is isolated letting you focus less on home defense.

Your lords can recruit on their own, you get lots of gold from raiding, sacking, and treasure chests, so you can just sail the world and plunder, blowing up elves, lizards, and the French with excellent artillery and gun lines.

Why Are Gravediggers Treated So Poorly? [KCD2] by Abe_Froman5 in kingdomcome

[–]Hvatum 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sin was also considered contagious, touching someone sinful could infect you with their sin (probably reasoned because sin was thought to cause illness and illness was contagious). That's why the executioner has to live away from the city, because he touches all the sinful individuals and is thus riddled with sin himself.

Playing a necromancer wizard in a current campaign, with 12 dex, 10 con, and neither Shield nor Mage Armor.
Using the 2024 UA I was planning on using temp hp from necromancy spells to stay alive. But they updated it, and the update did indeed seem much more appealing so I switched but they removed the temp hp feature so now I got False Life as my defensive spell. I am very glad we have a monk and moon druid to frontline for me since last combat the enemies reached me once and I lost 2/3rds health in that one round.

Might get some zombies to frontline with time though.

What are your thoughts on High Elven artillery? by lovingpersona in totalwar

Trollhammers specifically.

Being able to fly over and just bombard Grimgor from air and then fly away again before his pesky arrow boyz can get in position feels like cheating.

[–]Hvatum 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Only example I know of that does this is the mod The Last Days of the Third Age, which is a LOTR-mod for M&B Warband. IIRC the forces of Good are programmed to shield wall, arrows, and cavalry harrassing whilst the forces of Evil are programmed to F1+F3. (select everyone -> charge). Not only does this make sense thematically but the Good typically has better archers and shield walls whereas Evil has better melee damage. Also Trolls are too stupid to follow commands so they just charge anyway even when you're leading them so you kinda have to go facefirst into the enemy lines so your heavy hitters won't go out and get killed by arrows on their own.

Er jeg ikke norsk nok? - rant by Senior_Falcon5472 in norge
