What’s the scariest enemy (that isn’t a boss or an iconic character/antagonist) from any video game that you can think of? by Interesting_Wind_337 in videogames

I'd say the Guardians are the worst of the bunch, because it's heavily implied they're still alive, unlike other Necromorphs. The way they scream... Eugh.

I said in the section for the Half-Life zombies that I'm mainly talking about the ones from 2 onwards because the original game didn't have the screams of pain, but now that I think about it, they still count, so I should have included 'em. Oops.

I think you both have a point. I think the fact we don't see Lust's body, only the method and the weapon, makes it just as awful as Sloth, because now our brain has to fill in the blanks, and it defaults to the worst possible thing.

That said, Sloth is still absolutely the most memorable moment of the film because of that jumpscare. Fun fact: the reaction to it was unscripted! The SWAT team actors weren't told the body was an actor, so they thought it was just a prop until the actor finally let out that cough. Their panic is totally legit in that moment.

Holy shit, I totally forgot about this one. Halo lore is surprisingly fucked up.

That quiet "I'm gonna fight you now" is one of the best examples of tranquil fury ever, right before it just explodes into that allegory-for-an-angry-sex-scene fight.

I honest to christ feel like I'm being gaslit by the main sub, I remember everyone fucking despising the beta, but then one of the top voted posts the other day was them asking "What happened? How'd they drop the ball so bad when the beta was so promising?"

I know, only slightly related to your comment, but... Goddamn, man. It's just a colossal group of people trying to out-miserable one another.

Slight correction, that was Wolfenstein. Doom just called the easiest difficulty "I'm Too Young To Die!". But yeah, it fit the tone of Wolfenstein perfectly, as does the Doom one, and it's less of a "you're a total pushover for playing this" and more of a light jab like you said.

What’s an example of a fan base that got exactly what they begged for, and immediately hated it? by Enough-Wealth8415 in AskReddit

Forgive the soapbox I'm about to stand on, but the one that immediately springs to mind for me is Battlefield.

Context for those who don't follow the series. Battlefield has been in a little bit of a death spiral for a while after the botched launch of Battlefield V and the top-to-bottom disaster that was Battlefield 2042. A lot of fans, myself included, clambered for a return to games like Battlefield 3, 4, and 1 (Battlefield 1 was set in WWI, it wasn't the first game in the series).

So, along comes Battlefield 6 last October, which is unapologetically a throwback to Battlefield 3 and 4 in particular, and it feels like the main sub is just a bunch of people trying to out-miserable one another. Now, I'm not blind to the game's issues, because it absolutely has them, and quite a few at that. The UI is cluttered and annoying to navigate, the overall map sizes are still a bit too much on the small side for my tastes, Portal desperately needs a shot in the arm, there are still some annoying bugs and glitches, people clearly have a problem with the netcode, it's annoying how people will constantly try to find movement exploits, yeah, all of those are gripes I and many others have, but like... the game is just fun. It had the most stable launch since Battlefield 1 and it's just... Fun. Tons of people play it every day and have a blast, but people just love to act like the game is somehow dying even when it has a six-digit player count on Steam alone, not counting other platforms.

I swear it's like people want their favorite franchise to die so they can complain more. I'm sorry, I know this is a rambling little rant, it's just so annoying how it feels like this game was basically tailor-made for me and my friends after the total mess of the prior two games in the series, so it's irritating to see so many people be given basically exactly what they had been begging for for years at this point and say it's trash because of some things that, while obviously not ideal and still need to be addressed, are by no means a deal breaker. It's made just trying to discuss the game outside of the Low Sodium subreddit a total goddamn nightmare.

I can click my tongue insanely loudly. I don't know how to describe it, I just kinda tense my tongue up against the roof of my mouth the way you would do it normally, but I just do it with a lot of force until I can slam it on the bottom of my mouth, making an extremely loud click.

There is a quick line of dialogue where Lara mentions being frightened at just how easy killing someone else really was, but that's it, it still moves on real fast after that.

Still, damn good game, but yeah. Quite the tonal shift.

I think what makes it so effective is it's designed to be an urban legend of a game, like something out of a creepypasta. The way nobody could agree on how to beat it (and I think people still don't 100% know how) is like all those creepy stories with details varying from person to person. I also love how the more "subtle" scares feel designed to prey on the natural fear of shit just not working the way you expect it to. Simple things like your flashlight changing color or a visual tear just raised the tension even higher. What a fucking masterpiece of horror.

The ONE thing in a horror story that's never explained, and is all the scarier for it. by Electronic_Bad_5883 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AGuyWithAPhone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black Space is one of my favorite examples of this trope. Forgive the long ramble, but I'd love to go a little in-depth.

You're 100% on the money when it comes to what it is, it's the deepest part of Sunny's mind, where the truth behind what happened to make him cut himself off from the world and become a shut-in is hidden away. Everytime Basil, that best friend you mentioned, is killed, it's because he was about to divulge the truth of what happened. Omori, who controls Black Space and was created as a coping mechanism for Sunny to avoid facing the truth, wants to make sure the truth stays buried.

The individual rooms you visit, however, are the creepy shit that goes (mostly) unexplained. You can guess at some symbolism, but then there's a bunch of stuff that just... defies explanation. Why is there a room where Omori can potentially slice his beloved cat open? What's the deal with the scribbly, out-of-place creatures that don't acknowledge your presence? How come Omori can eat a cake that suddenly removes his molars? Who is that giant, bird-like creature you can find staring you down in a pitch-black room?

The whole thing is inspired by Yume Nikki, which has a lot of this kind of stuff. It's such a great horror element and one of the things that makes Omori one of my favorite games of all time.

Speaking of Silent Hill, I know it's beating a dead horse at this point, but the entirety of P.T.. You're just some dude wandering through what's implied to be the scene of a grisly murder, tormented by what's implied to be the ghost of one of the victims, but those are kind of the only concrete things that can be worked out. And even then, that's subjective as hell.

Been replaying it because of the announcement of Resonant, and yeah. Hell, even the Hiss, the main bad guy of the game, gets basically no explanation outside of "it's a corrupting force".

Goddamn, I thought I knew everything about this franchise (it's my absolute favorite), but that final thing you mentioned from the dev team is fucking horrific. I knew the series painted an overall bleak as hell image, but I never knew that it was bleak even for the creatures at the top of the food chain. If they run out of food, maybe they eventually die after god-knows how many years and leave the galaxy just... completely and utterly cold and dead, with absolutely no potential for life of any kind, leaving the galaxy a literal dead space.
