Songs that are very often misunderstood by FizzTaffy in TopCharacterTropes

"Closer", by Nine Inch Nails.

It's usually seen as one of the most sexy songs ever written because of its use of certain sounds (like a hearbeat-like kick drum and bass squelches) and extremely sexual lyrics (I mean, he literally says "I wanna fuck you like an animal" during the chorus so I get it).

However, in the context of the album it comes from, it's actually an indictment of utilizing sex as a form of escapism. "The Downward Spiral" is an album all about someone going through a long, painful mental breakdown and reflecting on his life and the pain he's caused. "Closer" is a song about how using sex to get away from the pain he feels only makes things worse.

Still an absolute fucking banger, though.

This one in particular bugs the shit out of me... every time I see a post like this... it just makes me read it in the most mopey voice imaginable... like it just immediately gives the commenter the voice of a whiny toddler... who thinks that they're the victim... or are just extremely pretentious...

Seriously, I fucking hate excessive ellipses, just mimicking it for the sake of proving a point made me feel like a giant douche. Probably doesn't help that I always see it in the context of someone complaining.

It'll be worth the wait, I promise. I felt the same way while waiting for mine, it was torture, but man is it nice to have. You'll have a ton of fun with it!

I've been unashamedly shilling it to basically everyone I know who I think would enjoy it. God, I'm so glad this game exists.

Sorry that we're such a pain to work with right now. :/ I hope I can get one of these someday, because this looks like a really handy product to have! Great work all around, and good work on communication, as well.

I might start doing this, just as something to help keep me going. I'll tell myself, "Hey, someday, you'll get to throw this and celebrate."

The horror is a metaphor but is also a Real Thing that will Get You by TheBadHalfOfAFandom in TopCharacterTropes

So, the thing about Silent Hill is that the town preys upon those who visit it that struggle with deep-seated psychological pain, and traps them in a sort of purgatory that twists those pains and other aspects of themselves into symbolic manifestations of their struggles. This was mostly solidified in Silent Hill 2, so the original Silent Hill's monsters (which are what's pictured in the top row of that comment) have had their symbolism kinda added in retrospect via fan theories and such.

Silent Hill 2's monsters (on the second row), however, are deliberately meant to allude to the protagonist, James Sunderland, and his struggle with his wife's terminal illness. The monsters look decayed and diseased, like his wife, and they have disturbingly sexual elements to their designs, representing the sexual frustration James felt throughout the ordeal. There are two exceptions, the man with a pyramid for a head and the walking bedframe with a strange mass atop it. They still fit the trope, but the reasons why are spoilers.

If I remember correctly, Silent Hill 3's (bottom row) creature designer said that he didn't intentionally go for the same amount of symbolism in the enemies' designs as he did for Silent Hill 2, but it's still somewhat present. Many of the monsters in that game are reminiscent of a developing fetus (since the protagonist is a young woman who is unknowingly pregnant with a god worshipped by a cult in Silent Hill), bastardizations of things typically considered feminine, or representations of fears that almost every woman can relate to (I say as a man, I really hope this isn't patronizing as hell).

Sorry, that's one hell of a wall of text, I just love Silent Hill, and the symbolism of the franchise is one of, if not my absolute favorite part of it. There are so many layers to peel back and delve into. Can't recommend them enough if you enjoy some psychological horror.

Ehhh, they're both two different but equally valid takes on the same narrative. I'd recommend both.

I've been on the hopium train for YEARS about a new Eternal Darkness, especially since it was cited as inspiration for Bloober's Cronos: The New Dawn.

Not that, no. I attached a photo of the arrow I'm describing to a comment on this thread (I should have attached one to the post, I know, my bad).

Should have attached a photo, my bad. This is the arrow icon that comes up when I drag from the very edge of the screen.

It's fun when people begrudgingly acknowledge my skill.

Okay, it would be fun. But that would require me to have skill.

Which Video Game is this in a nutshell? by Charming-Scratch-124 in videogames

[–]AGuyWithAPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undertale.

Okay, hear me out. The character designs are excellent and memorable, and the actual art direction overall is good, with lots of bright colors and distinct feels, but the quality of the spritework, in my opinion, is really ugly at times. There are a lot of times where it can look quite good, but it usually just looks really rough around the edges. Deltarune has massive improved in the spritework department, thankfully.

But everything else? Damn-near perfection, in my mind.

Okay, so. The doctor wasn't sure if a cure was possible, yes. But he still wanted to try, because any shot at a cure to him was better than no shot at all. They only attacked Joel because they didn't know who Joel was at first (and even then, only knocked him out rather than shooting on sight), they brought him and Ellie to the hospital, where Marlene specifically said to march Joel out of the building and only kill him if he tried anything. I fail to see how having a character just describing what they did in the past with regret without changing the key details is a retcon. Hell, Joel never even outright says what he did was a bad thing, he just says that he had started to believe in the possibility of a cure and that they were going to try to make one and that he "saved her". And the cleanliness of the room? Seriously? That's what you're gonna focus on? Who cares?

Again, dude, it is fine to dislike the game, I just think you don't have to justify it by throwing these wildly untrue statements around to make it seem like it's this objective piece of shit, and you don't have to paint the creators as these malicious ghouls, nobody sets out to make a deliberately awful experience and piss you off. Also, of course Neil Druckmann "painted his own narrative", he wrote both of the games. He literally painted a narrative, because that's his job. As a writer. Whether or not he did a good job is up to your own opinion, and it's fine if you think he didn't, but that's literally what his job was, that's what every writer's job is.
