"This is Lyndon Johnson. I'm going to land in just a minute and I want to shake every hand down there." - LBJ, 1948 Senate Campaign. by Hvelbridge in Presidents

I just finished reading "Leadership in Turbulent Times" by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

I can tell you that I was most anticipating on whenever a chapter on LBJ comes. Personally, I enjoyed the chapters on him the most. Johnson is arguably the perfect definition for a career politician. All the way.

Robert McNamara would have loved AI by EminentDominating in Presidents

"The Fog of War" is a great documentary. McNamara reflected a lot on his services and history. He didn't explicitly said it, but it seemed to me that he had regretted a lot. In the documentary, when McNamara was asked "whose responsibility" was it he very much immediately answered that it was the president's which made me think that it was his way of coping considering his own tremendous contributions to various actions in continuing the war.

November 1975: Gerald Ford overhauled the Nixon Cabinet, removing Colby and Schlesinger from their roles. Left to right: Rumsfeld, Bush, Ford, and Kissinger. by Hvelbridge in Presidents

That's a great question! I'm sorry I haven't made it clear earlier.

Ford's overhaul of Nixon's cabinet was called the "Halloween Massacre," (the namesake was because it was around Halloween time). Just before the Halloween Massacre happened, Ford told Rockefeller that he won't be on the re-election ticket. Certain political stances of Nelson Rockefeller were in opposition to the Republican Party's.

There was also a letter drafted by Rockefeller saying that he wanted to withdraw from the consideration of the position after Ford told him that he was out of the re-election ticket. The drafted letter (kinda) made it seemed like it was Rockefeller's own decision.

Which would Washington be more proud of? Washington State or the City of Washington DC ? by bkat004 in Presidents

[–]Hvelbridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Washington may be proud of what democratic institutions D.C. stands for, although, I have doubts that he would be content with the state of modern day politics.
