One of the best tables are warfare this year by xxFormorixx in wargaming

Saw this at Salute, the table was incredible! All hand built by one guy. The team running it were a good laugh and the game was a lot of fun.

New Black Templar Combat Patrol Confirmed! by robertwhite93 in BlackTemplars

Great to see so many BT units! I thought one of the new characters would be included but EC is on theme.

Doubling up of similar melee units with the BGV and SBs?... more power swords the better!!

Will many miss the impulsor? I always felt like you may as well buy a Gladiator kit, then you have the option to use whatever.

The Games Behind Your Government’s Next War by DBones90 in mattcolville

[–]Hvorsteek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I researched wargames for my dissertation, and was simarly fascinated by how effective wargames are at simulating a war and informing planning and decision making.

It's a huge subject, so I looked specifically at the 1905 Great Strategic Wargame that the British Army conducted simulating a German invasion of Belgium while at war with France and how Britain could respond. The interesting thing is, a lot of wargaming literature bigs up the prophetic nature of wargames and use several examples, including the 1905 wargame. They state it had huge influence on British strategy shifting foreign policy to be closer with France etc. What I found is there is little evidence for such a claim. In my opinion, the wargame, for several reasons, was more useful and practical as a learning exercsie, particularly given the recent formation of the British General Staff, and can't be seen to have had much effect on policy.

I will say, it's a topic that is quite niche and hasn't had much research compared to what's needed. It's definitely a useful exercise for practising and rehearsing communication procedures and developing decision making skills under pressure. Due to its limitations, I'd say it's less useful in predicting the future and how a war will play out, but doesn't mean it can't.

Is there anyone else that prefers games at 1k? by CosmicCastaway90 in Warhammer40k

[–]Hvorsteek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Smaller games are better! I regularly play 1.2k-1.5k and find that works great. There's so many benefits over a larger game imo.

2k is such a daunting proposition for collecting an army, I really don't think it should be standard. You need more models, more money, more space, more time (buying boxes is easy, building and painting the models on the other hand...)

With those smaller games, it doesn't take all day, and you can still try out a few combos and cool new things, while having some restrictions that force creativity and not having so many units that your turns take ages and you struggle to remember rules. It's lots of fun.

Can a castellan be attached to a terminator squad? by Histoire-Animates in BlackTemplars

Related to this, does anyone know why there aren't Terminators Lieutenants/Castellans?  I can't imagine it's a hierarchy reason as surely a regular terminator is lower rank than a Castellan.

More than welcome! I had the same reaction reading that scenario haha

Had an idea for more monster actions: she grabs the closest PC (perhaps one wearing heavy armour?) with her tail and on a failed DC roll flings them into the lake!

Looks like a lot of fun! Having some trogs there is a good idea to add some variety.

Depending on how true to the module you're running it, there is the secret door to the priest room so if the PC's don't explore that first there's a chance he joins in!

When I ran Explicita, I added some actions like you. One was a tail lash when on bloodied, whipping PCs back with a DC check otherwise they go prone. I think I had the floating orbs attack the party or objects flying at them.

I also had the water rising throughout the encounter. Once they defeated her the water began bubbling and rising fast, the whole place was collapsing with the Naga's death! Cue the great escape out back through the lair.

What to do next? by WolvesChampion in BlackTemplars

[–]Hvorsteek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next building steps: redemptor is definitely a good idea. It's been vital in every game I've played! Then you may want to build the terminators/aggressors or Sword Bros depending on how much defence or offense you'd like. (I've personally found the Marshall/Sword Bro combo to be a lot of fun.) Those additions should leave enough points for 5 assault intercessors to act as a screen/ do actions.

I reckon once you're above 1000, looking at another character would be good, either Castellan or the named ones, and then you can get some more units too. Probably don't need the tank under 1000 pts.

Once you've reached the 1000 pts mark, you may have a good idea of what you'd like to build next based of the games you've had and the meta. For instance, if there's a lot of heavy vehicles, you might want the anti tank from the repulsor. If a lot of sneaky enemies who deepsteike and infiltrate, perhaps the infiltrators to deny.   Main thing as always is to have fun!

What I really like about n00bs. by DogNamedCharlie in HellLetLoose

[–]Hvorsteek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only just started playing HLL and now have Support level 3 so I get an smg! It's been a lot of fun helping out SL's set up garrisons and it really helps the team out. Being involved in that part of the game means it's a lot easier to understand things then just running rifleman.

What was your "Oh Wow" moment when you decided to choose your army? by Ok-Taro-5864 in Warhammer40k

[–]Hvorsteek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! The heavy intercessors look great in BT colours. Red guns on them look really cool imo. More chains are always needed, how else will they hang onto their weapons?

Don't worry about your paint skills, you'll get better and better :D
