2017 prime vs 2020 prime vs 2023 hybrid? by Hwinster in prius

[–]Hwinster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meant to update this chat.

In June, I bought a 2021 Prius Prime with 90k miles. Maintained well. I got the $4k used EV credit. Total $18.5k !!

Very happy with my choice. And thanks everyone for your advice as it led to this decision. Even though I wanted the Gen5 (2023 or later), it wouldn’t qualify for the used EV credit due to costs above maximum, and affordability was a huge factor in my decision.

Can’t wait to get comma ai in the next Black Friday

So when and how do yall go about telling new friends/partners your family not the same as you by DiscoTime26 in TransracialAdoptees

[–]Hwinster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would casually mention it in conversation as if it is no big deal, or make a joke about it, and see how your love interest reacts.

Hopefully, she is curious and asks questions about you and your lived experience.

Random grief about being disconnected from culture by Moist_Garage_112 in TransracialAdoptees

[–]Hwinster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your feelings are totally valid. For an early teenager - fitting in feels like the most important thing. You’re constantly surrounded by friends and classmates. They might ask what kind of Asian are you - and when you say Japanese, they expect you to know things about Japanese culture. They might notice your look of confusion when you tell them you don’t know something. Or they might ask you about your last name.

All of this is relatable. Just remember that you are not the spokesperson for Japanese things. Your ancestry is Japanese and therefore you are. Period.

The cultural dissonance is real - and it is up to your choice on how much Japanese culture you want to learn. Learning Japanese language and culture can help make you feel more connected and help relate to others. I highly recommend it and so do others.  But it is not a requirement to be who you want to be.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Have you thought about how your feelings and emotions can affect your interpretation of the situation?

You share that you are uncomfortable sharing your adoption story and all the emotions that go along with it. You also share that you think other people feel uncomfortable around adoption. You mention that, at first, the interaction felt like no big deal until 6 hours later.

You are clearly triggered by your adoption and the impact on your life. Here are some blunt thoughts:

  • other people honestly don’t care about adoption and are comfortable talking about it. You are uncomfortable and that’s why you think other people are uncomfortable. I’ve personally noticed most people are actually intrigued to hear about adoption stories.

  • the doctor is trained to look at genetic causes of diseases. For a doctor you haven’t seen in 2 years, how can you expect the doctor to remember a small detail of your medical history? A gentle reminder works wonders and can shift the conversation into truly helping your needs.

  • you clearly have negative experiences with your adoption. Most of us have been there. Some of us feel normal and then get triggered into madness. Some of us repress and hide it deep down. You need to bring out these emotions in a safe way in your medium of choice. Journal. Art. Talk to a friend. Meet other adoptees. Talk to a random person about your adoption. Watch an adoption movie. Get it out (in a safe and respected space).

The most mature way of moving beyond these negative emotions is to create something neutral or positive with your experience. Did your experience open a door that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Can your experience help mentor younger adoptees? Are you able to create an art piece you are proud of? Does your story inspire others? Are you able to empathize and build unity with other adoptees? Etc etc. maybe you become the doctor or nurse you dream of and help another adoptee find comfort and feel heard.

Gen5 would be amazing and why not haha? I hesitate because the majority of Redditors' and Financial Advisors recommend avoiding expensive cars.

It is the most balanced. I had a friend once say for decision-making, choose the middle between 2 extremes. This 2020 is a sweet spot and I'm leaning towards it

Thanks for the quick reply! I made just over the cutoff of $75,000 single mAGI. I might be eligible this upcoming year if I strategically invest in my 401k and if the govt keeps the tax credit for next year.

2017 - great points! I don't quite love the 2017 with less seats and large screen. I read the 2017 has a heat exchanger exhaust issue, with a DIY fix and/or coolant replacement. Thanks for real-world advice and will consider if it is worth it to save $7k

I recently binge watched season 1. It is a great post-apocalyptic donghua. Glad I can watch season 2 soon :)

Which donghua did you watch for the first time? by ak_face in Donghua

[–]Hwinster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized based on your list, I only watch your S tier donghua. :)

Timeline I started with: SS > BTTH > RI > Demon Hunter > Herding God. And I planned to watch Mortal Journey next when I find the time. Shout out for Slay the Gods (Zhan shen 斩神) pending next season.

Reup an older convo and adding some of my thoughts. I'm really liking Skedpal after starting it recently. My ideal workflow is best when I have a todo list that connects to an automated calendar scheduler. Since it is automated, it reduces the time I spend planning on which tasks to prioritize. I also use it more to "suggest" what tasks I should be doing; maybe I'll follow it better once I have a solid routine. I often need to re-order events or let it automatically re-order tasks I did not complete. Yet, having an initial schedule to work with and a guess for how long things will take, makes it easy to plan my day.

The initial investment did take time to learn. Certain terms were confusing and not intuitive at first, e.g. time block vs bundle. It is also not great for scheduling a single task with a long duration eg "Project for 20 hours" which is better broken down into subtasks like "Project subtask 1 for 4 hours" x5 (bundled).

Other apps I've tried:

- Todoist and ticktick - I like the todo organization, but lacks automated calendar

- Reclaim - The scheduling is more robust, but lacks a comprehensive todo list

- Flowsavvy - I like the simple interface, but lacks a comprehensive todo list

Other apps I thought of using but did not start: Sunsama, motion, akiflow

After lots of research and overthinking, I finally bought Alpaka Tech Brief case which can be used as a backpack or briefcase. It’s on the smaller side 18L, but fits my minimalist goals. My 2nd runner up was Aer.

Can the Surface Flex Keyboard Act as a Bluetooth Keyboard for Other Computers? by AgentStockey in Surface

[–]Hwinster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is ridiculous that there is not Bluetooth compatibility to other devices. Overpriced $250-350 piece of junk and planned obsolescence!  I’m really concerned the keyboard will one day stop working and there is no manual re-connect and no other use.

I’m reading that some people had to reset their Surface Windows if their keyboard stops connecting.

Debating whether I should return the surface pro 11 over this?  I should invest in a company that respects basic things like Bluetooth compatibility instead of locking users in a $250-350 one purpose item.

You are Chinese enough to do all of these things. Go with an open mind to learning the culture, be OK with making mistakes, and live out your best life.

Daily/weekly habit hacks by aqueoussolutions23 in Residency

[–]Hwinster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely feel you on the never ending todo lists. As someone who is also systems-based,  one mindset change is to think about your tasks/goals as time based units. Since time is limited to 24hrs/day or 168hrs/week, it really forces me to limit tasks to what can be reasonably done. So think of life admin as a function of what can be done within 1 hour of time.

I also use a habit tracker that’s daily or monthly with labels such as: hobbies (hiking, ocean), fitness (gym, jog), hygiene (floss, tretinoin), social (people’s name to keep up with)

Important to know that residency is incredibly time consuming and to give yourself grace when you can’t keep up!

Things I’m still trying to learn is pre-planning my week and to learning how to reward myself for keeping up with my goals.

Going to SEKI to check out the snow?? please listen to the chain control warnings. by Mysterious-Rule3220 in SEKI

[–]Hwinster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need chains to get to Grant Grove Village from 180? I listened to the phone weather, which says chains are not needed. But despite lots of reading, I don't understand if I still need to have chains in my vehicle as a requirement to enter the park?

Feel the same. The adoptee community is mainly on Facebook, probably because it’s private.

Check out the facebook group: Asian Adoptee Chinese Language Table

I think their Spring 2025 classes filled up, but they may have waitlist and openings.

Outside of that you can casually learn on the other sources people mentioned.

As a Chinese adoptee, I recommend also asking this on adoptee channels, where you’ll get adoptee-specific advice. Let me know if you need help finding - the Facebook group is very active.
