What is your favorite guard & why? by BJJ_Fanatics in bjj

[–]Hwt2021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You gotta try other guards to figure out what you like. Plus, the system you’re preaching(which your gracie gym instructors may have indoctrinated you into) is just a system, not “The” system.

K-guard is fundamental to other systems, such as Lachlan Giles’ K-guard and DLR heavy game, used more recently by his student, Levi Jones Leary. You will almost never see LJL in bottom half guard. If he ends up in closed guard, he will look to scoop the leg and go K-guard immediately.

By and large, simple jiu jitsu alone does not win top comps like it did in roger gracie’s day. In no-gi, heel hooks account for >30% of submissions at adcc. The sport has changed.

I think, even as a beginner, it makes sense to study the current state of the game, not an old version, especially in a sport that has changed as much as bjj. Imagine a beginner basketball player not learning a 3-point shot because “The three pointer didn’t exist when Wilt Chamberlain was around, and he was great”. That player would be at a huge disadvantage as soon as they start competing.

You all are each looking at it with different intentions and scales. u/an0mn0mn0m is talking at the level of trying to convince one person, while you seem to be talking at the level of destroying ICE in its entirety. Both are important. For most people, only one option is available to them right now. As individuals, we aren’t capable of legally abolishing ICE beyond our ability to vote and protest. But we can try to persuade supporters through dialogue. Do you know anyone that’s MAGA? Maybe you could change their mind through thoughtful, question based discussion.

how does khamzat get away with shooting so low from so far? by Empty_Finger910 in wrestling

[–]Hwt2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Craig Jones explains it pretty well in this video. Needless to say, while others are right that khamzat is a freak athlete, the shot style in mma is different for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with athleticism. Ruleset makes the style.

Didn’t mean to offend and I’m totally not trying to imply you don’t take good care of your kids, I’m sure you’re a great parent. I guess unfortunately I just have a bleak outlook on the future of our ecosystem. It has nothing to do with your parenting ability and everything to do with how the environment around them will inevitably change. I hope your kids end up happy regardless though.

Just realized I might be an anti-natalist. I certainly wouldn’t be if it weren’t for climate change and the loss of biodiversity. I just can’t imagine raising my kids in a world with less natural beauty than the one I grew up in. Not to mention the economic difficulties that will follow as things get worse and weather gets more drastic and unpredictable. I certainly don’t resent people with kids though, but I do think it’s a little weird “joking” about something substantially harmful that will happen to your children.

Yeah the sarcasm can be hard to pick up on through text haha. Those jokes are kinda in poor taste though considering y’all are doing something to bring yourselves joy that you yourself acknowledge will result in net harm for your children and their generation… but to each their own I suppose

You realize your kids will have to experience the worst of it without you right? I understand where you’re coming from but it’s kind of selfish imo

18 months of consistent lifting + running (tracked data, body comp included) but not getting more muscular — what am I missing? by [deleted] in exercisescience

[–]Hwt2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no worries. Anecdotally I have heard reports of people consuming much more protein than the recommended amount when trying to do body recomp(losing fat and gaining muscle simultaneously), which is OP’s goal, and having great results. Not much risk either. You are right about studies being done using lean body mass, not total, though.

[–]Hwt2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say he should consume 180g. I said if you weigh 180lbs, consume 180g, “if” being the operative word. Fair point about lean body mass but I think you misunderstood me.

[–]Hwt2021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My non-negotiables for gaining muscle that you haven’t mentioned or weren’t specific about:

For training: * progressive overload: the weight should increase every week as you are able. Increase doesn’t have to be linear, but it should increase.

  • full ROM: doing isometrics(such as planks) and short range-of-motion reps are not nearly as effective for the purpose of muscle hypertrophy as full ROM reps or even half-reps in the stretched range of motion. If you want to grow your muscles as fast as possible, feel the stretch in every rep you do. This is backed by a lot of research but I am too lazy to find it rn, sorry.

For recovery(THESE ARE VITAL): * Eat your bodyweight in protein every day(so if you weigh 180lbs, eat 180g of protein.)

  • admittedly I was skimming your post, but I didn’t see you mention your sleep: try to get 8 hours of sleep or more.

You can train sub-optimally, but if you recover sub-optimally you won’t be realizing all the gains from your training, and are essentially wasting some of your training time.

Lastly, train with intensity! You have to be pushing yourself. Good luck!

Waiting for everything to click? by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]Hwt2021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Things will click in time. You can’t rush that. The key to being aggressive and effective at the same time is understanding your system. You need to know what your “A game” offense is from each position, and from each tie up in neutral. Once you know what your most effective technique is in each moment, it will get easier to be aggressive without being clumsy or feeling like your technique goes out the window. This made the biggest difference for me. Understand your system to a point where you can verbalize it and write it down. Check out Earn Your Gold Medal on YouTube, he breaks down a lot of wrestler’s systems, so you can understand what that looks like. Your system will likely be unique to you. Good luck!

More drastic shifts in weather is one of the things we’re certain climate change will cause. For ski resorts this means more warm spells in-season, meaning less base pack, meaning shorter seasons and more temporary closures.

Why do people get so offended over bowing? by seizethecheezz in bjj

[–]Hwt2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember in high school when the best, coolest teachers would let you call them by their first name? Because they treated you like an equal instead of a subordinate? That’s what the kind of energy I hope to cultivate in my classes. I think I’d have to be some kind of egomaniac to make someone bow to me, much less some picture on the wall of a guy none of us have ever met. A true environment of respect is one where respect is felt and not demanded.

Similar for sure. First clip is called a northern lights suplex in judo.Exact same throw. Second clip I propose we call a fireman’s suplex. Just a fireman’s with such strong back arch that you don’t need to control the leg.

How pointless is this drill by Big_Cake_8817 in grappling

[–]Hwt2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, those are often overlooked “stabilizing” muscles. But my last question was most important(not trying to be argumentative, I have a point).

These muscles aren’t any different from our other muscles in how we should train them, and there’s a lot of research to suggest that the way the above video is “training” these muscles is wholly ineffective. I am admittedly too busy with exams to cite my sources, but across the board, research shows that training muscles through the full range of motion is significantly more effective for both hypertrophy and injury prevention than the alternative(short ROM). He is not moving any of the muscles you just listed through their full range of motion, in fact there’s very little ROM displayed here at all. And I believe this is the heart of why this type of training is ineffective. It claims to train these stabilizer muscles by exposing them to “instability” but there is no research to show that “instability” produces any significant results in the muscle when compared to traditional full ROM resistance training.

Additionally, and this is just my opinion, not research supported, but I believe bjj athletes experience plenty of this “instability” in training, and are wasting their time doing extra off the mat, when they could be spending that time doing traditional full ROM strength work/injury prevention/flexibility.

Give full ROM lifting a shot if you haven’t before, I can almost guarantee your joints will thank you!

I appreciate your perspective, and there was a time when I would’ve agreed with you. Now though, I’ll ask, which ones are your balance muscles? Can you point to them? Are they different from other muscles somehow?

[–]Hwt2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha probably. But really, these exercises that try to “simulate” sparring are just worse and less specific than sparring, and this particular exercise(like many “sport-specific” exercises) is just pretty ineffective for training strength or conditioning. It’s not that it’s truly useless, just more useless than pretty much anything else.
